Thank you.

That as least made some headway into what I should have got in the previous race. Cry

By his own admission Symon Wilde is used to sending “average animals” into staying races so he is naturally excited at the prospect of having a Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe horse racing for his stable this Saturday at Sandown.

Wilde is to saddle up Nelson to race in the familiar colours of navy blue, white armbands and cap in the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (2400m), which will signal his first ever runner for seven-time Melbourne Cup winner Lloyd Williams.

Wilde explained the horse came “out of the blue” with the emerging trainer with bases at Ballarat and Warrnambool only receiving the horse last week.

“Just got an email saying would you like to take this horse on,” Wilde explained on Wednesday. “Maybe he (Williams) noticed we had some good success with stayers, I am not sure.

“I’ve got a bit of a passion for the stayers and obviously Lloyd does.

“I am delighted to get a horse of that quality. I think he ran in an Arc and has run in some top races over there.”

Nelson ran eighth in the 2018 Arc, just 4.5 lengths behind Enable. He then came out to Australia but had just the one run for trainer Liam Howley and did not start for Danny O’Brien.

Wilde said he would take no credit if the horse was to win first-up since his unplaced run in the 2019 Coongy Handciap, which was his only start in Australia.

“He’s done all his work at Macedon and we’ve just had him a week,” Wilde said. “I took him to Camperdown for a gallop on Tuesday and he went to the beach this morning so I can’t tell you too much about the horse.

“All I can say is he’s fit and he’s moving well and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do on Saturday.”

Wilde said he hoped to have success with Nelson so as to attract more better-quality stayers to his ever-growing stable.

“We cut our teeth on average animals in a way and so is a good opportunity,” he said. “I think we’ve got a good set-up to suit that staying European horse. A sand track, a country environment, access to beaches and all that, it could work really well.

“Those type of horses could fit in really well here.”

Arc horse? Pacemaker more like it. Will take some effort to get the best from this over cooked lead pony.

Despite his pacemaking duties he ran a good race and beat quite a few good horses home.

I know about as much about Arc formlines as Donald trump knows about good domestic policy, so take this with a grain of salt.

But what constitutes a genuine Arc horse and what does not? Or a genuine group 1 horse in general?

I agree with djebel. If you run in one of the best races on the planet where horses from several nations come together and race each other, and you can finish within five lengths of the winner, to me I do not care if you are a pacemaker or not, that is a good effort, behind one of the best racehorses we have seen in ten years.

If you asked anyone in Europe what they think of Twilight Payment, they would tell you he is a second stringer and sometime pacemaker. but he had good form and was good enough to keep going and win the cup.

Depending on the strength of the field if you can finish within five lengths of a Arc winner, you are a talented race horse.

Twilight Payment was a front runner rather than a pacemaker. He had solid form over many seasons. Led all the way at his first win and his most recent success in the MC. The good enough to lead all the way in the Cup line is nothing but 20/20 hindsight. It speaks zero about Nelson's form.

I can find 500 racehorses to have finished within 5 lengths of a Gr1 winner that never won a Gr1 race. There would be plenty that never won a Gr2 race either. Many, many very ordinary animals have managed to finish close to a Gr1 winner without being much chop. The fact Nelson beat Magical home in the Arc doesn't mean he's anywhere near her class. Any intelligent form analyst can tell you that.

But that said he won two Group 3 races and ran second in two Group 2's.  Group 1 class?  Clearly not.  But a well above average galloper in UK and Ireland.

Not that it matters much, as Lloyd ruined this fellow just like he has with so many others.  And the fact Danny O'Brien has handballed the gelding suggests he's a real risk of recovering his NH form.

Yes he ran a great race in the Arc ( a complete outlier run compared to his three lead up efforts ) but I genuinely think he was cooked at three. Whatever ability was there at two waned quickly as his 3yo season went on. His last race as a 2yo was clearly his best effort. Lovely pedigree with loads of black type close up on the dam side. Someone should give him a chance at stud.

No chance of a stud career Enable Me - he’s already been gelded.

And has been scratched from Sandown on Saturday, so we’ll have to wait another time to see if he’s still got zest for racing.

Just read that Lloyd has also moved Saracen Knight from Danny O’Brien to Symon Wilde.

Saracen Knight did a decent job in his 4 start spring 2020 campaign, considering he hadn’t raced for 2 years previously.

Not sure what races he’d target for 2021? Any thoughts on what races he’d be best placed?

Nelson from O'Brien to Wilde.  Saracen Knight from O'Brien to Wilde.

There's rather more to these moves than beach air imo.

I’d assumed that Buckhurst went back to Ireland with Joseph O’Brien, but he’s listed as now being trained by Robert Hickmott.

Not entered for anything, which is surprising.  As a 2000m specialist, I’d have thought the Aust Cup would have been on the radar.

Apart from Homesman & Kenya, does Anthony Freedman have any other of Lloyd’s horses?

Macedon and Hickmott was probably the most successful partnership, so makes sense

I doubt he's interested in the compulsory trainers course which even ex trainers wanting to renew have to partake e.g. P. Payne SE. who's likely forgotten more than the teachers/instructors know Wink

Hickmott thrilled by Macedon return

Racing Article

Ryan Reynolds@Reynolds_R

1:19pm

, (

Trainer Rob Hickmott says it's an 'honour' and a 'thrill' to return to training for Lloyd Williams.

Hickmott, who won two Melbourne Cups with Williams' horses, was announced as returning to Macedon Lodge earlier this month, with the leviathan owner keen to bring all of his horses back to his training base.

Hickmott revealed he will still be able to manage his successful Caulfield stable while also preparing Williams' team.

Williams and Hickmott look likely to have their first runner on Saturday, with Saracen Knight accepting for the Wangaratta Cup.

"Obviously it's a great honour and thrill to come back and have your name beside some of Lloyd's horses. Lloyd is so passionate, loves his horses and loves his farm," Hickmott said.

"It's a pleasure to go back there. And the improvements he has done out there is amazing.

"It's a terrific role for me. I can still run my business as usual.

"Lloyd hasn't tied me down to any hours and I'm very lucky they don't start trackwork until 9am out there. I can still watch all my horses work at Caulfield and then three days a week watch them gallop work out there.

"I only live five minutes from Macedon, so in the afternoon I can pop in and check on the horses and the staff and oversee the operation that way, while still running the operation 100 per cent with my team at Caulfield.

"I'm very happy."

Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing
