    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 at 7:42pm
Was thinking about this last night looking at some old Bloodstock reviews.

Is there a list somewhere of the order of sires with G1 winners?

I know Galileo would be top of the list up around the high 80's, then Danehill, Sadlers Wells, followed by Zabeel, Dubawi, Sir Tristram in the mid 40's and then the memory gets sketchy....

Fastnet Rock, Redoute's Choice, Deep Impact would be there somewhere climbing up to 40 I assume.

I arbitrarily said 20 as that's the number Frankel is on from just 5 or 6 crops and I'm sure in years to come he will topple his dad.

Pretty sure some of the South American G1 would of been missed but they are hard to trace.

You also have to remember some of those stallion served far fewer numbers than those since the 1990's.

Top stuff Furious.

Bold Ruler at 27 G1 winners off some very low numbers. Amazing

Mind you not everyone could afford to breed either so the participation pool was much lower from breeders as well.

Surprised that Silvano is that high on that list.... and what have I missed - who the heck is Roy? One of the South Americans you mentioned.

Be interesting to see the foals per year figure of the most prolific year for the top sire of the 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s noughties teens and now.

I know there has been an increase in numbers but was it a gradual rise or a sudden rise at some point in time?

Fantastic to see Wallace and Maltster included on the list too - although I would want to scrutinize the count - just races are they including as Group 1 ?

Just a query.
The US Grading system come in 1973.
Anything before that is hard to judge and also certain events would be missed since they are now discontinued.

I notice Sunday Silence is credited with 44 G1 winners. However, I thought that back in the era his progeny raced, most Grade Ones in Japan were only considered to be Local G1s & only a few were International G1s. Consequently, when I researched this a few months ago, I was of the opinion that Sunday Silence only had 15 International G1 winners. However, the sources from which I obtained this information seemed to be have contradicting views on the status of those races.

Look take the early ones as races dating back from when the G1 race system started.  That's all we can do.  Take the local G1's.

It was that was for a lot of the sires on all the lists.  As stated the Grading System came in 1973 so before that the list of G1's was smaller than today.  The sires served less mares than today.  In fact to get the numbers some of them have they were breed changers.

Danehill could be higher up the list.  He had three G1 local victories in HK which I think where rated but Arion doesn't have on the list so they had to get knocked out.

Wallace was the Oaks, Derby and Cups king of his era.  Massive number of classic winners.

I can confirm Wallace's 31 retrospective Group 1 winners but he sired a lot more than 62 runners.  Pedigree Query, which is neither complete nor always reliable lists 134 progeny.

The following is a list I compiled early this year of sires of G1 winners based on stats available from Equine Line at the time. Those stallions were foaled since 1980. I have only included thise with 20 or more G1 winners.

My next post will include stats available from Arion & include Australian, New Zealand & South African based sires.

As you can see, there are differences between the two sources.

roughly depends of entry into the data base.  When the data base starts for certain countries etc etc etc.  No databases go back till day one completely.

Even when searching for early horses if the line wasn't continued the only stud book doesn't have it.  So early stud books have to be uses.  For a complete number of foals ect you can only get them from certain dates late last century!  Most of the stakes winners are there etc.  But only named foals for mares and only certain named foals for earlier mares.

I gets tricky.

Also even Arion and Bloodhound differ for numbers and prizemoney sometimes.  THat can be due to how RISA gives out prizemoney.  THe complete prizemoney for the race includes all the trophies and retirement fund etc.  Not always given.  Even on Risa.  No trophies are included you have to go searching or check the winner after the race to find out if a trophy was there in the prize.

Makes for fun getting data these days.

Just another reason why Wallace deserves to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.We have a small but very knowledgeable sub-group working on this & all HoF categories from the 19th Century.
Wish Tontonan could be part of this one day.
