 Is anyone here left-handed?

This is for a study a friend is doing.

Supposedly only 10% of the population are left-handed. My friend doing the study thinks left-handedness is becoming more common. He estimates it to be closer to 20% if you count ambidextrous people.

Do you realise that left-handedness is connected to autism.

I just sent this to him.

  • Prevalence:
Approximately 10% of the world's population is estimated to be left-handed.
  • Heritability:
  • Left-handedness has a genetic component, with multiple genes identified as being associated with hand preference.
    http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24">
  • Brain Function:
While the differences between left- and right-handed brains are subtle, left-handers tend to have less lateralized brains, meaning the two hemispheres of the brain are less distinct.
    http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24">
  • Advantages:
Left-handed individuals may have advantages in sports that involve aiming at a target in an area controlled by an opponent, as their opponents are more accustomed to right-handed athletes.
    http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24">
  • Historical and Cultural Context:
Historically, left-handedness has faced some social stigma and pressure to be right-handed, particularly in writing.
    http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24">
  • Neurodiversity:
Research suggests that left-handedness may be more prevalent among individuals with neurodevelopmental differences like autism.
    http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24">
  • Health:
Some studies have explored potential links between left-handedness and certain health conditions, including mood changes, anxiety, and even PTSD.

State school. Also when I was about 10 I learnt tennis. The regular coach was away, I was taught by a teenager who didn't know how to teach left handed players. Made me change hand to right, there went my dreams of being the next Rod Laver Ouch

Both my eldest brother and my OH were ambidextrous, but in different ways. One wrote left-handed but played sport right-handed...and the other one did the reverse.

Left-handedness is often connected to the arts, yet so many sports people are left-handed.

It is the same with people who stutter who are outstanding singers.

Nothing wrong with it but you are just wired differently. If I was left handed I would be proud that I was able to do something others couldn't.

He is surprised the percentage is so low.

When I watch movies I am never surprised how many actors are left-handed.

Julia Roberts, Rock Hudson, Pierce Brosnan, Charlie Chaplin, Brad Pitt, Mark Wahlberg, Frank Sinatra...

Several famous actors are left-handed, including Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, and Bruce WillisOther notable left-handed actors include Hugh Jackman, Morgan Freeman, and Jeremy Renner. Some actors like Nicole Kidman, who is naturally left-handed, have even learned to write with their right hand for specific roles.

I was just intrigued, after discussing the topic with him, to see if the percentage was as high on here as well.

It's common in international cricket teams.

Worth remembered in cricket that some right handed people will bat left handed because of a few reasons, for some they prefer having the top hand being the dominant hand, others are more like Mike Hussey, who is naturally right handed but switched to batting left handed because he loved Alan Border as a kid.

No doubt some even bad left handed to reduce the risk of LBW from right arm bowlers coming over the wicket, thanks to the outside leg isn't out rule.

Also, at high levels of cricket with two batsmen (sorry hate “batter”) of similar ability, a left hander is sometimes selected for strategic reasons.

Would have made more sense.

I can play a poor game of tennis left-handed, but that is about it. I do everything else right-handed.

I am like this. Anything that requires 2 hands (golf, cricket bat) is left handed, anything that requires 1 hand (throwing a ball, tenpin bowling) is right handed. The exception to this rule is writing which I do left handed despite only requiring 1 hand.

My Brother (RIP) and I were exactly the same. I write left handed and do most other things right handed. Simmerly, my brother wrote right handed and did most other things with his left. It's a mixed up world. Confused

I switched to putting cross-handed and found it was far more reliable. Using my left-hand as a vice to hold the putter steady worked a treat.

Perhaps you feel more comfortable being top hand dominant?

I know a bloke who is left handed but if we played golf and nobody else brought left handed clubs (he only played occasionally so saw no need to own a  set) he would play with the right handed set but use a left handed grip, still swinging right handed obviously, it must have felt wierd.

I had a friend who wrote with his left hand but printed with is right.
He was left handed in most things but it was weird seeing him switch when there was some printing involved in writing a report

Thanks Grok.

The brain, particularly the motor cortex, plays a significant role in determining handedness. For right-handed individuals, the left hemisphere's motor cortex is dominant for fine motor skills like writing, while in left-handers, the right hemisphere's motor cortex takes the lead. This hemispheric specialization indicates that the brain, through its motor functions, influences which hand becomes dominant.

And yet one can train the non-dominant hand to perform tasks if one has to.
