I thought he was very disappointing. Had every chance. Never looked likely at any stage. Maybe trained off?

Has any news come through as to whether the race will stand on its own four feet after the 4 years that Bill Gibbons has guaranteed it ?

No official announcement yet but I think it’s more than likely to be announced in the new year. Possibility of bumping up the undercard and making it a feature stand alone metro Saturday. In between Ballarat and Pakenham

I like to concept, having a stayers race for Australian and NZ bred horses only. It is a wonderful incentive to encourage trainers and breeders alike.

I would like to make a suggestion that the race be held in different states, what are your thoughts?

Having had a qualifier for this years race, we were very disappointed not to have made the trip. A long one it would have been with a great deal of time spent away from home in NNSW.
Our mare trained off toward the end of this prep and was not herself so we made the decision to put her in the paddock over the summer.
The weight was also a concern, whilst she carries over 70kg in track work, In the race going at a solid pace for 4600m with 64 or 65 kg on her back was a worry. Not sure if mares had the usual 2kg allowance?

I wonder if they could have a final qualifier in each state over say 4000m, with the final field working down from finishing positions eg winners qualify before 2nd place getters? Run them all on the same day 3 or 4 weeks prior to the Jericho Cup itself?

Last years time was run at 14.41 seconds per 200m.

Does that equate to a true stamina test ?

Always liked Wolfe Tone since he an a great race in the VRC Derby at few years ago. But he’s been pretty disappointing to date.

But how can we cheer for any horse other than the mighty Crafty Cruiser. It would be a great story if a great old warhorse like him capped his career off with Jericho Cup victory. Go Crafty!!

I rate Aigne a huge chance in this, won the qualifier three back easily and leadup run was excellent without much luck.

The growing popularity of the Jericho Cup has prompted racing authorities to consider moving it to a standalone Saturday fixture.

Despite the inclement weather, Sunday's raceday attracted more than 3500 racegoers and drew high praise from many others that watched the coverage on Racing.com.

Almost 5000 attended the inaugural Jericho Cup raceday in 2018, which was run in brilliant sunshine.

Warrnambool Racing Club CEO Tom O'Connor said he would engage in discussions with Racing Victoria and race pioneer Bill Gibbins about ways to further grow the event.

With the impending redevelopment of The Valley, the late November fixture on the Saturday between the Ballarat Cup and Pakenham Cup will become available to another club and O'Connor believes it presents an opportunity to trial a standalone Saturday meeting at Warrnambool.

"That's the goal," O'Connor said.

"To try to grow the event in the future we've got to be looking at these standalone Saturdays, particularly for the city of Warrnambool.

"The timing is perfect off the back of the spring carnival in between the Ballarat and Pakenham Cup meetings, I think it's something that Racing Victoria could package up quite nicely.

"But it's obviously a discussion that we need to engage Bill Gibbins in, given his role and investment in the concept."

Gibbins supports the push for the meeting to become a standalone metropolitan meeting but believes it should remain on a Sunday.

"Make it a metropolitan meeting, but keep it on a Sunday," Gibbins said.

"People have got to get down here and you can have a drink at The Whalers on the Saturday night.

"The Sunday is good and have Monday off."

Racing Victoria's Executive General Manager - Racing, Greg Carpenter, said the governing body was committed to supporting the efforts of Gibbins and the Warrnambool Racing Club to grow the Jericho Cup.

"We're always looking at ways of strengthening the program," Carpenter told RSN's Racing Pulse.

"I think $300,000 for a race of this kind is pretty right at the moment and it's actually about more than just the race, it's the whole weekend and the celebration.

"We've got to make sure the Jericho Cup raceday continues to build.

"I want this to be around in 10 years, it's such a great day."

Standalone slot for Jericho Cup?

I find it incredible that 58+ kgs is too tough for highclass racehorses over 3200m but they think nothing of slugging these slowcoaches with limited ability with 66+ kgs over 4600m.

really looking forward to this race
my uncle was there (Palestine 3rd lighthorse 35th remount ) where all of this unfolded
bill the bastard won first two in alexandria i believe, and if anyone hasn't read the book of the same name, do yselves a favour and have a read, will astound many, such as when bill  got shot by the turks when his rider was carrying messages, there are accounts of the turks and the anzacs running a book on whether or not bill made it through, one time he  got through they found multiple bullet wounds in him
if y'all (LOL) love hoses and this country read the book, if that doesn't make u proud to be an aussie or kiwi dunno what will
i am not really sure, but i think bill was the only horse returned to oz, as most of them were tearfully taken into the desert and shot by their riders rather than let the locals get them, at the end of hostilities, major shanahan got him home i believe, he actually dumped general allenby one time, he was over 17 hands something like high rolling
love the concept, backed our trainer last year on golden flag, nearly stole it 66/1
should be more races/events of this type, this is what Australia, and our "cuzzies" across the ditch are and who we are,
that what this race honours, all the thousands of Walers that went to the middle east and never came home, and their riders
Banjo Patterson was there and should be really honoured with a fair dinkum race named after him

Does seem to be a lack of depth in that field. 4600m seems a long way to run for a horse race

4600m isn't even 3 miles Shocked crikey, they jump fences, in heavy conditions over 4 & 4 1/2 miles so fit horses with decent trainers, should have no trouble running it.

I believe that the G3 Bart Cummings Stakes run in the spring at Flemington was renamed from The Banjo Paterson in 2004.
