I've been following so far & reading all the articles on it. The best part is that the Emma Stewart  conglomerate won't dominate the entire series, unlike the recent Sires at Melton Big smile

Hmm, totally wrong re. Emma Stewart Tongue

Champion trainer Emma Stewart heads a stunning female dominance of the Inter Dominion pacing final.

Stewart's record-equalling five finalists are the bulk of the 10 runners from 12 starters in Saturday's Group 1 final trained by females.

Stewart, who trains in partnership with Clayton Tonkin, matched the record set by power Kiwi combination Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen, who qualified five runners for the 2019 Auckland Inter Dominion final and snared first and third with Ultimate Sniper and Thefixer.

But the dominance of Stewart and Tonkin has trumped that given they won seven of the nine qualifying heats across three nights of pacing series.

And the quality is there, too. Three of Stewart and Tonkin's finalists share pre-barrier draw favouritism for the final at $5. They are: Act Now, Honolua Bay and Mach Dan.

The other female-trained finalists are: Expensive Ego and Spirit Of St Louis (Belinda McCarthy), Better Eclipse (Jess Tubbs), Bundoran (Amanda Turnbull) and Petes Said So (KerryAnn Morris).

Only two females have trained Inter Dominion pacing winners. Natalie Rasmussen trained and drove the great Blacks A Fake to a record four final wins (2006, '07, '08 and 2010) and then teamed with Mark Purdon to win the 2019 final with Ultimate Sniper.

The ground-breaker was Kiwi Lorraine Nolan, who trained Yulestar to an upset win in the 2001 Brisbane final.

"It's a huge thrill and really satisfying to get so many through to the final at what's really the first serious crack at an Inter Dominion we've had," Stewart said.

"All five have a winning chance, too.

"The barrier draws are going to be really important. I'd lean to Act Now because he's so tough and versatile. You can count on him when the chips are down."

Act Now earned his reputation as a leader at two and three, but two of his three runs through the Inter Dominion have been from off the speed. He led throughout to smash the track record and win his last-round heat at Geelong last night (Saturday).

HARD ACT TO FOLLOW!

— The Trots (@TheTrotsComAu) December 3, 2022

And Act Now has even more female flavour, being driven by Jodi Quinlan, who has won a Miracle Mile, but is yet to taste Inter Dominion success.

"That was a big win because he got fired-up in front after an early burn and still kept going," Quinlan said. "He's shown great versatility and gives you a Plan A, B and C, but, yes, I'd still love a good draw in the final."

Honolua Bay has been the "find" of the series, going through the heats unbeaten.

"He's just gone to another level," driver David Moran said. "I wasn't sure a series like this would suit him, especially the longer races, but he's kept getting better and stronger.

CLEAN SWEEP!

— The Trots (@TheTrotsComAu) December 3, 2022

"The (long) 2570m didn't bother him tonight and he'll make the trip in the final (2760m) without any worries.

"He doesn't necessarily need a good draw, either. He's probably better when you don't rush him out at the start."

The trotting series is in limbo with long-time favourite Bolt For Brilliance under an injury cloud.

The Kiwi superstar was found to be lame after finishing a close second to local star Just Believe at Geelong.

Stewards have ordered Bolt For Brilliance to undergo a veterinary inspection before being cleared to contest the final.

The barrier draws for the pacing and trotting finals are live on Sky Racing 2 (Foxtel 527) and TrotsVision at 7.30pm AEDT Monday.

When they started fiddling with the format a decade or more ago and put a week between the heats and tried other variations it really killed the event. I know they've made changes back in recent years but it doesn't seem to have recaptured the novelty and magic that the series had.

I was a big fan too kiwi88 , late 50s to mid 70s , its lost the wonderful " feel " it had , the winners were spread around and the competion was fierce , most racing people knew who were the Stars of the game , then somehow the powers that be took their eyes of the ball in the mid eighties , in came the " heavies " , the " boat races " , dirty swabs gone missing and " milkshaking " , the fish rots from the head they say , pretty much spot on . Ouch

From another, earlier thread:

There's of course more fundamental reasons for the decline of public interest in the sport, ones which'll never be reversed.  Until about six months ago a past active member of TBV was marketing manager for Harness Racing Victoria and worked his butt off, most recently gaining exposure on Racing.com, however the damage in interest and to wagering pools had far earlier surfaced and he forever faced a thankless battle.

The cream has risen to the top after the third round of heats of the 2023 Ladbrokes Inter Dominion Series, with just one pacer and one trotter remaining undefeated.

Leap To Fame made a sweep of the pacers heats when strolling home in front of the final pacers heat, with Just Believe stealing the show, the seven-year-old looking to have a mortgage on the Trotters Championship.

With the barrier draw for the ID23 Pacers Championship Final to occur on Monday, the following standardbreds have qualified for it:

45 points: Leap To Fame

42 points: Better Eclipse, Nerano

33 points: Swayzee

32 points: Classie Washington

31 points: Pete So Said

30 points: Spirit Of St Louis, Speak The Truth, Future Assured

26 points: Kanena Provlima, Turn It Up

25 points: Our Money Rocks

23 points: Cantfindabettorman

Barrier draw vital for Inter Dominion hot pot

Grant Dixon knows the importance of tomorrow's (Monday) Inter Dominion barrier draw.

Dixon's budding superstar Leap To Fame has been beaten four times in 14 starts this season and bad barriers have been a key reason on each occasion.

"He's due a good draw in a big race," Dixon said. "I know it doesn't work that way, but it would be nice if his luck with draws changed for this one."

Leap To Fame drew the back row gate (nine) when beaten for the first time this year by his half-brother, Swayzee, who had gate two, in the Group 1 Blacks A Fake at Albion Park on July 22.

The four-year-old came from a wide draw (gate nine) and did all the work when second in the world's richest harness race, the $2.1 million TAB Eureka, at Menangle on September 2.

Leap To Fame has also had to overcome wide draws for Group 1 wins in the Sunshine Sprint (six) and Rising Sun (seven) this year.

This shapes as the most important barrier draw so far in Leap To Fame's short but stellar career.

If he draws better than Swayzee, Leap To Fame could be as short as $1.40 to win the most iconic race in this part of the world at Albion Park on Saturday night.

In contrast, if Swayzee gets a much better draw, Leap To Fame may not even start favourite.

So, even the cool, calm and relaxed Dixon will surely be anxious and tense around 1.30pm (Brisbane time) tomorrow (Monday) when the draw is conducted.

Leap To Fame is currently the $1.60 favourite pre-draw, ahead of Swayzee ($3.80), Better Eclipse ($6) and Nerano ($6.50).

After winning his first 10 starts for trainer Jason Grimson, including his only clash with Leap To Fame in the Blacks A Fake, Swayzee was beaten in his second and third round Inter Dominion heats, but they were more hard luck stories than disappointments.

Swayzee couldn't lead or dictate either of those races, but give him a draw to do so in the final and he will likely start favourite ahead of Leap To Fame.

Young gun Cam Hart confirmed he would stick with Swayzee over stablemate Nerano, who he drove to two Inter Dominion heats. NSW freelancer Jack Trainor will partner Nerano.

Where Leap To Fame and Swayzee draw is also key to the chances of Nerano and Better Eclipse, who are good enough to beat them with right luck.

Better Eclipse, who won two of his heats and ran a terrific second in the other, is part of a big series for Victorians Jess Tubbs and Greg Sugars. They also have defending champion Just Believe in the trotting final.

Just Believe, who won all heats and the final of last year's Melbourne series, is $1.30 favourite to complete a clean sweep again this year.

Sugars was in awe of his track record-smashing win in Saturday night's final round heat.

"He's just an incredible horse," he said. "I'm a bit lost for words. He did that in second gear. It's amazing."

Queen Elida, who ran third to Just Believe last year, returned to her best brilliantly winning on Saturday night and looks the obvious danger.

INTER DOMINION GRAND FINAL FIELDS (not in barrier order):

PACING FINAL: Leap To Fame, Nerano, Better Eclipse, Swayzee, Classie Washington, Pete Said So, Spirit Of St Louis, Speak The Truth, Future Assured, Kanena Provlima, Turn It Up, Our Money Rocks. Cantfindabettorman (emergency).

TROTTING FINAL: Just Believe, Ollivici, Queen Elida, Plymouth Chubb, Sir Fahrenheit, Mufasa Metro, Funny Face, Adelle, Majestic Lavros, Van Sank, Gus, Thebestbourbon. Constantinople (emergency).

Swayzee gets barrier advantage over Leap To Fame in Group 1 Inter Dominion Final

Leap To Fame will have to come from outside his half-brother and main danger Swayzee to win Saturday night's Group 1 Inter Dominion final at Albion Park.

It continued a streak of bad barriers for Leap To Fame when he drew gate six, while Swayzee (four) and another key rival, Nerano (one), fared much better.

The barriers turned betting on its head with Swayzee into $1.80 after being as much as $4.50 before the draw. Leap To Fame eased from $1.65 to $2.50.

"It's a great draw. Pretty much what we hoped for," Swayzee's trainer Jason Grimson said.

"Even though he's been beaten in his past two (qualifying) heats, I haven't been at all disappointed with him. He's run through the line really well both times.

"Now he's got a draw to up front and rolling, you'll see the best of him."

Swayzee won his first 10 starts for Grimson by leading or racing right on the speed.

Leap To Fame has been plagued by bad draws in major races this year, including coming from the back row when second to Swayzee at their only clash in the Group 1 Blacks A Fake at Albion Park on July 22.

Grimson is aiming to become the first trainer to win three successive Inter Dominion pacing finals with different horses after scoring with Boncel Benjamin (2021) and I Cast No Shadow last year.

He's got Swayzee and a great support runner in Nerano on Saturday night.

"That's (gate one) a perfect draw for Nerano," he said. "I thought he'd make the final and be a place chance in the final going into the series, but Cam (Hart) has driven him really well and his confidence has built through the heats. He'll get his chance from that draw."

With Hart on Swayzee, Grimson confirmed Jack Trainor would come up from Sydney to drive Nerano, who is a $5 chance.

Opportunists Spirit Of St Louis (gate nine), Speak The Truth (10) and Better Eclipse (11) all needed good draws to be serious winning hopes, but all three drew the back row.

"It'll be tough now from there, especially with the big two drawn the front," said Speak The Truth's trainer Shannon Price about her first Inter Dominion final runner.

Better Eclipse's co-trainer and driver Greg Sugars knows his hopes now rest in the hands of others.

"I'll need the two big guns to go hard at each other, especially from my draw," he said.

Sugars was far chirpier after his champion trotter Just Believe drew ideally in gate four in the Group 1 Inter Dominion trotting final.

Just Believe came from a wide back row draw to win last year's Melbourne final and is $1.20 to successfully defend his crown on Saturday night.

"That's ideal. He gets out well, so we can take advantage of that draw," he said. "I'm especially happy to have the barrier draw advantage over Queen Elida (gate five) as her past two heats runs show she's probably the main danger."

INTER DOMINION BARRIER DRAWS

PACERS: Front row: Nerano, Turn It Up, Swayzee, Future Assured, Cantfindabettorman (emergency), Leap To Fame, Kanena Provlima. Back row: Classie Washington, Spirit Of St Louis, Speak The Truth, Better Eclipse, Petes Said So, Our Money Rocks.

TROTTERS: Front row: Mufasa Metro, Funny Face, Majestic Lavros, Just Believe, Queen Elida, Ollivici, Van Sank. Back row: Sir Fahrenheit, Constantinople (emergency), Plymouth Chubb, Thebestbourbon, Adelle, Gus.

What a feat having half-brothers in the final.  Particularly as they almost certainly came from different straws imported from the USA.

World will be watching champ's Inter Dom title defence

Superstar trotter Just Believe is taking this Inter Dominion to the world.

As many Swedes sip on their morning coffee, they will be watching or listening to Just Believe – or "Harry" as he's called around the stable and by many of his fans – try and successfully defend his Inter Dominion crown at Albion Park on Saturday night.

Plenty will be tuning in from the US as well.

Just Believe's global fan base stems from his daring and largely successful three-race Swedish trip, which included tackling the world's most iconic trotting race the Elitlopp at Solvalla in Stockholm, back in May/June this year.

The man who made that trip possible, Solvalla's Sports General Anders Malmrot, will be ashamedly cheering as loudly as anyone from the other side of the world.

"Harry has set Australia on the trotting map here in Sweden and he has a big number of fans who follow him every race," Malmrot said.

"Harry, Greg (Sugars, driver) and Jess (Tubbs, trainer) were fantastic ambassadors over here and made a great impact on everyone.

"After seeing him in his comeback races, I would say he seems even stronger and faster than before, and we hope for the best (this week) so maybe we can see him again in the Elitlopp.

"From all our harness fans here, we keep our fingers crossed and wish Harry all the best on Saturday."

Although Just Believe didn't win in Sweden his last two runs were placings in elite company including a phenomenal second to one of the world's best trotters, Francesco Zet, in Boden in the north is Sweden on June 17.

"The fans here didn't want him to go home," Malmrot said.

"But it was time and now we hope Greg and Jess win with him on Saturday and think about bringing him back here again."

Despite almost 100 hours of travel to Sweden, around it and back home, Just Believe has unequivocally returned a better horse.

That doesn't surprise rival trainer Chris Lang, who had the same experience when he took Sundons Gift to the Elitlopp in 2009.

"This is history repeating itself," he said.

"Sundons Gift was a good trotter and won the Inter Dominion before he left, but he came back a beast and was pretty much unbeatable for the next months.

"Sundons Gift was dominant when he defended his Inter Dominion crown after coming back from Sweden and Just Believe is the same."

Lang saw it first-hand when he chased home Just Believe with his rising star Ollivici, who was unbeaten in this Inter Dominion before meeting Just Believe.

"When you win a couple of heats you start to get a bit cocky, but I got put right back in my place last Saturday. He (Just Believe) toyed with us. He's on a different level," he said.

Just Believe has already created history by winning seven successive Inter Dominion races, the three heats and final last year in Melbourne and his three heats in Brisbane.

His dominance combined with in ideal barrier (gate four) have him a commanding $1.15 favourite for Saturday night.

"There's no question he's better than last year. I was a bit lost for words with how easily he won last Saturday. He did it in second gear. He's a very special horse," Sugars said.

And beyond this final, what about pleasing those international fans and returning to Sweden?

"It's an option, we had such a great time over there and were treated like rock stars, but we just want to get through Saturday night and into some big races in Melbourne early next year before we think seriously about Sweden again," Sugars said.

Busy schedule concerns owner of Inter Dom favourite

The odds are in favour of trainer Jason Grimson winning his third successive Inter Dominion pacing final, but the man who owns his two runners thinks it will be a big challenge.

Leviathan owner Mick Boots, who owns "well over 200 horses" throughout Australia and New Zealand, believes Grimson will need to call on all his genius to win the final with Swayzee or Nerano.

In a frank admission, Boots said both horses were "quite flat" after their respective third round heat runs at Albion Park last Saturday night.

"Grimmo (Grimson) told me they both really knew they'd had runs and were quite flat," Boots said.

"It's a tough schedule, three heats in a week. I know they all (horses) have to do, it's obviously taken a bit out of my two.

"Thankfully there's a week between that last heat and the final. It sounds like Grimmo will need every day of it."

Boots is also wary of what toll Swayzee's recent successful trip to Christchurch, where he humbled NZ's best pacers in the NZ Cup on November 14, has taken on the five-year-old.

"It's a big trip and it was a quick turnaround to get him back home to Sydney then up to Brisbane," he said.

Swayzee had to fly from Christchurch to Auckland, then from there to Sydney where he only had a few days at Grimson's Menangle stables before being heading by road to Brisbane.

There was only 17 days between Swayzee's NZ Cup win and his first heat of the Inter Dominion.

Further fuelling Boots' concerns have been Swayzee's past two defeats – his only two defeats in 12 starts for Grimson.

But those defeats haven't fazed Grimson.

"Every run for me, he's hit the line strongly and been 100m in front when they turn in to the back (straight) after the finish," he said.

"If he gets to the front, he'll be so hard to roll. He's a true stayer."

Grimson was also thrilled Swayzee has drawn inside his half-brother and main danger, Leap To Fame.

"I didn't want him to draw one or eight and hoped he would draw inside him (Leap To Fame). It's perfect," he said.

In contrast, Grimson thinks barrier one is ideal for Nerano, who has looked dangerous through the heats sitting off the pace and finishing strong. He won two of his three heats and ran second to Leap To Fame in the other.

"I think he can hold out Turn It Up at the start and Cam (Hart, driver) has really built his confidence with some great drives to let him sprint home through the heats. The draw brings him right into it," Grimson said.

Grimson's past two Inter Dominion wins have been upsets. Boncel Benjamin was a $41 outsider when he won the 2021 Menangle final on protest, then I Cast No Shadow was $17 at Melton last year.

It takes a wise man a lifetime to grow a tree and a fool five minutes to kill one.

Australian Harness Racing Preview – Inter Dominion Finals, 16th December 2023
The barrier draw has turned Saturday night’s Inter Dominion Pacing Championship Final at Albion Park on its head with local hope Leap To Fame drawn to work and his half-brother and arch rival Swayzee likely to find the lead.

The siblings had gone into the series as the two big guns but Leap To Fame was the one to assert his dominance in the early rounds, going through the heats undefeated while Swayzee was a beaten favourite in his last two outings.

Those results had seen Leap To Fame an odds-on favourite pre-draw and Swayzee a drifting second pick but the barriers have seen the pair flipped in the market.

There's no doubt the marble is a blow to Leap To Fame's chances but he has been the standout pacer not only in the series so far but also through the season of racing.

He'll likely have to work from the barrier – possibly sitting parked outside of Swayzee - but he has been very brave under similar circumstances in several big events this season and is going as well as ever.

Leap To Fame now offers a bit value in the betting for a horse with such a terrific record at this circuit so his loyal supporters will be banking on his class and courage being enough for him to tough it out.

Swayzee came into the series on a remarkable winning streak – including a Blacks a Fake victory over Leap To Fame at Albion Park in the winter - and while he has been defeated in the last two rounds he still appears to be going well.

He should get to the front from this draw and has won both November's New Zealand Cup and the Blacks A Fake from that spot.

A free-rolling Swayzee is a formidable sight and he will no doubt he hard to get past.

Better Eclipse is going really well with two wins and a second through the heats. He draws the back row and while that's not ideal he possesses a lethal sprint so could be dangerous late if the two big guns take each other on.

Swayzee's stablemate Nerano has really emerged this series, chasing Leap To fame on night one and winning his next to heats.

The ace draw looks perfect for him as he is likely to have Swayzee's back in the run and get the sprint lane at his disposal in the home straight.

It's a different story in the Inter Dominion Trotting Championship with the barrier draw only strengthening the claims of the hot favourite.

Defending champion Just Believe has been the dominant force through the series and really put his rivals to the sword when making a clean sweep of the heats last week.

He will be peaking for tonight and a favourable draw should allow him to push to the lead.

He is strong, classy and in terrific form so will be very hard to get past.

Queen Elida returned to winning form in good style in round three after brave efforts in her first two heats.

She draws on the outside of Just Believe and it won't be easy to cross him but she is a reliable mare with a string of top-two finishes so could make a race of it.

Ollivici has really stepped up in this series. He was a brave second to Just Believe last week after winning in the first two rounds, beating Queen Elida from a similar barrier in one of those.

He is a definite top-three player as is Mufasa Metro who was the other big beneficiary at the barrier draw.

He is ultra consistent with a string of-top-four finishes to his name and the ace draw should see him enjoy a charmed passage.

Plymouth Chubb is the other trotter to really emerge this series and while he draws on the back row he has been going great and powered home from behind to Queen Elida in round one. He is one to look for late.
