Thought I'd kick start a thread for the Derby winner.

Kelly 'extremely proud' of Hitotsu

by Ben Sporle

Wendy Kelly watched on trackside at Flemington as Hitotsu crossed the line first in the Victoria Derby on October 30.

The Group 1-winning trainer didn't have a runner in Australia's oldest classic race, nor a runner on the day, but that says even more about Kelly herself.

Kelly's husband Kevin, a renowned industry bloodstock agent, found Hitotsu at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sales and then the Cranbourne-based trainer put the polish on the Maurice colt at his first three outings for owner Kevin Payne.

"We were actually at the races with Mr Payne to watch the horse," Kelly said of Derby Day.

"It was mixed feelings, thrilled for Mr Payne, thrilled for the horse and a little bit sad, but that's probably natural.

"As things go along, they always get good offers for these horses and it was too good to refuse for Mr Payne.

"We suggested to Mr Payne he retain a share in the horse if he could, only because we knew how good he was and what he would do as a three-year-old."

Kelly paid $100,000 for the colt and saddled him up in a Blue Diamond Stakes as well as an unlucky sixth placing in the VRC Sires, before Ozzie Kheir and his part-owners came knocking.

"My husband Kevin always looks at the Arrowfield draft and really liked him," Kelly recalled.

"Kevin has a marvelous eye for a horse and has selected a number of good horses for different trainers over the years.

"I knew pretty much the first time we ever galloped him that he was pretty smart.

"He has a massive set of lungs and was a very natural athlete.

"And I'd always said to Mr Payne he would be a Derby horse."

Kelly was proven right when the colt stormed home comfortably to win the $2 million Victoria Derby for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Payne, who retained a significant stake in the horse, and his new part-owners.

"It wasn't a surprise to us to see what he did because we knew how good he was," Kelly reflected.

"Everything we did with him was to have him used to the pressures of that big-time racing.

"Hence the reason we went through the Diamond, I knew the Diamond and Preludes would always be too short for him, but he held his own.

"And that whole campaign with us was aimed at having him ready to go as a three-year-old.

"We are extremely proud."

So while Kelly might not have been holding the Derby trophy aloft, she can take great satisfaction from the vital role she played in his G1 triumph.

Kelly tasted success at the elite level herself when Bon Hoffa won the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in 2007.

Remarkably, just 33 hours after Hitotsu won the Victoria Derby, his dam Love Is Fickle delivered a filly by Castlevecchio.

Looked like he bumped Alegron, I guess the question was how much impact it had?

Any chance they take him the Explosive Jack path and go to the SA and/or QLD Derby?  He's already a dual derby winner so he's going to get a decent impost for the cups, may as well grab another derby or two whilst the colt is going good?

What is a decent impost in the Cups these days ?

You can be sure he will be very poorly weighted next to both Benaud and Alegron.

Well according to his trainer the plate is his mission , that being the case , how Do you weight him ? going into the cup on 2 runs knowing how he trains him , forget Benaud , Alegron 2-1/2 kgs inferior ?

I'd guess there's no way he'll campaign on, unless they back up in the QE.  And there's two very good reasons for that.

Not sure about that furious. I think the sprinting 3yos and miler 3yos are less than stellar. Hopefully the longer distance ones are tip top.

Home Affairs is possibly the best 3yo sprinter but this crop and him are an ordinary standard. That Lightning was disgraceful.

Anamoe looks very good against his age.

Hopefully he is right for next weekend although they have the excuses ready to be uploaded.

5 starts with Ciaron for 4 wins, including 3 G1’s is an impressive record.

I’d forgotten that he had his first 3 career runs when with Cranbourne trainer Wendy Kelly.

Watching the replay it is clear to me that Alegron shifts across into Hitotsu's running line rather than Hitotsu impeding Alegron and also Hitotsu was clearly travelling better when they touched, as other suggested yesterday it would have been laughed out of the stewards room.

I really hope they give him a crack at history and go to the SA Derby next and if successful, the Qld Derby, he hasn't had a "traditional" AJC Derby prep, 3rd up into a Randwick/Australian Guineas and via either Roseghill race or the Alistair Clarke, he won't need runs in between, we likely won't see another in our time capable of winning the 4 G1 Derbies on offer in Australia, looks to good an opportunity to pass up.

Hopefully he races on in the spring and if the Cox Plate is the aim as has been said, hopefully he tackles it first or second up.  They could kick him off in either the Makybe Diva or Underwood Stakes, that would also keep the Caulfield Cup open instead of the Cox Plate if it shaped up as the better race for him.

He is definitely staying in training at 4.

After his Australian Guineas win his Australian arm of the training partnership said he could train him to win over 1400m. Will be interesting to see if they try that.

If they want to try that, perhaps the Winx (Warwick) Stakes would be a good race to have a shot at, 3 weeks into the Makybe Diva/4 weeks into the George Main/5 weeks into the Underwood.

Has that been confirmed? Any data?
