![]() Bonds fans defend major retailer after it copped backlash over Christmas adPopular Australian retailer Bonds has sparked outrage over one of its Christmas ads, with some fans choosing to “unfollow” the brand. An army of Bonds fans has come to defend the major retailer after one of its Christmas ads sparked fury online. Yesterday, Bonds Australia posted an image of two men kissing to its official Instagram page, and while many found it to be a “beautiful ad”, others slammed the retailer for being “inappropriate”. The image shows the two men, one who is sitting on a kitchen bench, both embracing in a passionate kiss while they pose topless wearing just the brand’s signature briefs. It was captioned: “It’s the little moments that make the Christmas season so special |

An Instagram influencer was forced to backdown after her pledge to donate $1 from each sale of her beauty product to bushfire victims spectacularly backfired. Sarah Stevenson told her one million followers in a video she wanted to help raise funds for people in the fire-ravaged areas of New South Wales and Queensland. ![]() Aussie adolescents among least active in the worldOnly one in ten Australian adolescents say they meet the World Health Organisation's guidelines for daily physical activity, making them some of the least active in the world. A first-ever global report, published in Lancet Child & Adolescent Health on Friday, has ranked Australia at 140 of 146 countries for adolescent physical activity. Eighty-nine per cent of Australian 11- to 17-year-olds reported failing to perform at least an hour of physical activity per day in 2016, as stipulated by the WHO guidelines, a slight increase from 87 per cent in 2001. Young women were slightly more inactive than their male peers, with 91.4 per cent failing to meet the guidelines compared to 86.8 per cent of young men. The report was based on self-reported surveys from 1.6 million school students aged 11 to 17, collected over a 15-year period. Australian data was drawn from Cancer Council Australia's National Secondary Students Diet and Activity survey and the ABS's National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey and National Health Survey. Students in New Zealand were similarly inactive, coming in two places higher in the country rankings.https://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/health-and-wellness/aussie-adolescents-among-least-active-in-the-world-20191119-p53c0g.html |

The top ranking education systems in the world aren’t there by accident. Here’s how Australia can climb upThe latest OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results show a long-term decline in reading, maths and science skills for Australian students. In 2018, Australian 15 years olds performed more than a year below those in 2003 in maths, about a year lower in reading than those in 2000 and a year worse in science than those in 2006. PISA doesn’t test rote learning but how well 15-year-old students can problem solve and apply their knowledge and skills to real world situations. PISA also shows which countries are the highest performers and which are getting better in science, maths and reading. Singapore has been the highest scoring country in all areas since it joined testing in 2009. The latest results show Australian students were three years behind Singapore in maths and three months behind in reading. Read more: Aussie students are a year behind students 10 years ago in science, maths and reading The Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang economic region (the participating regions of China) were three and a half years ahead of Australia in maths in 2018. Hong Kong performed at the same level as Australia in reading in 2000, but outperformed Australia in 2018. < id="c6ERF" ="tc-infographic-wrapper" ="https://wrapper.dwcdn.net/c6ERF/3/" style="border-width: medium; border-style: none; height: 432px;" width="100%" height="400px" border="0"> High performing systems invest relentlessly in their teachers. They focus on the same things Australian governments do – recruiting the best, training teachers well and giving them practical support and development. But our 2012 study of four high performing East Asian systems – Hong Kong, Korea, Shanghai (the region of China that participated in PISA before 2015) and Singapore – showed they followed a much more intensive process of seeing these changes all the way through into the classroom. Hong Kong made big reforms to reading in five yearsHong Kong performed at the same level as Australia in reading in 2000. But between 2001 and 2006, it used a series of deliberate reforms to go up from 17th to second place in the OECD’s Program of International Reading Literacy (PIRLS) test. First, they re-examined their teaching approaches, more specifically how to best teach reading. Researchers from the University of Hong Kong developed a new approach to teach reading Chinese, based on an extensive review of learning theories. Read more: Three schools reforms that will lift student outcomes Called the “integrative perceptual approach”, the teaching strategy moves away from memorising single Chinese characters to integrating the way students perceive the meaning and structure of Chinese in reading, writing and using language. They then made an intensive effort to help teachers shift practice. This included:
This is not a case of improvement through government control. Hong Kong provides a high level of school autonomy similar to Australia. But systematic government policies made it easy for schools and teachers to improve how they taught reading, resulting in large shifts in teaching practice. < ="https://cdn.theconversation.com/infographics/450/1dfde5e7ef453dc463a581efdf72dc01acca6ab5/site/index.?initialWidth=600&childId=responsive-tc-infographic-450&parentTitle=The%20top%20ranking%20education%20systems%20in%20the%20world%20aren%27t%20there%20by%20accident.%20Here%27s%20how%20Australia%20can%20climb%20up&parent=http%3A%2F%2Ftheconversation.com%2Fthe-top-ranking-education-systems-in-the-world-arent-there-by-accident-heres-how-australia-can-climb-up-128225" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" width="100%" height="752px" border="0">
Singapore focused on teacher qualitySince Singapore gained independence in 1965, it has transformed from a poverty-stricken country to one of Asia’s great success stories. Its schools are among the best-performing in the world. This is a result of intentional government policies that treat its teachers as professional partners. Singapore invests heavily in recruiting bright people to teaching. The selection process is tough, with only one in ten applicants selected, but their key to success is encouraging many young people to apply. For example, the Ministry of Education pays student teachers a generous stipend during their initial teacher training – an approach we recommended in our latest report as one of best ways to attract more bright young people to teaching in Australia. Read more: What are the main challenges facing teacher education in Australia? Singapore also reformed its teacher pay and career structures in 2000 to help make it a more attractive career choice. It raised teachers’ pay for new positions (equivalent to vice-principal pay and above), created a new system of teacher performance management, and tied it to teacher development and professional learning. Singapore also introduced elite “master teacher” positions. A teacher can reach such a status based on outstanding performance in their subject field. Master teachers became the teaching leaders in their subjects, helping set directions and connect schools to the best research. Master teachers also mentor senior teachers in schools, who in turn help other teachers improve through regular classroom observations, research groups, professional learning communities and mentoring. What Australia can doHong Kong, Singapore and other high performing systems did not stumble into PISA success by chance. They did it by design. We can do it too. Teachers have the biggest impact on student learning outside of family and home influences. Looking at Hong Kong and Singapore, we can improve teaching effectiveness by better attracting high achievers to teaching and providing better career and development support. We must start by getting a much better understanding of the problem. This means re-examining how we teach maths, science and reading. This is fundamental to getting the right teaching supports in place, so improving practice is easy to do, not harder. For Australia to improve, it is not about radically changing policy directions, or doing one thing differently. Instead, Australia must do many things better; much, much better. We must do them more systematically and with more intensity. The devil is in the detail, and in implementation. Grattan Institute’s forthcoming report in early 2020 will examine what Australia can do to improve teaching through better workforce structure Top ranked countries are Asian It is not the kids fault it is the incompetent teachers and flawed teaching systems IMO http://theconversation.com/the-top-ranking-education-systems-in-the-world-arent-there-by-accident-heres-how-australia-can-climb-up-128225 |

Fox News, Sky News, Dr E Facebook and religion explained: The More We See Fake News, The Less Fake It Becomes
Mark Travers Contributor I write about human potential and the science of reaching it.
There are many reasons why people share articles online. Sometimes it is to demonstrate an expertise or interest in a certain area. Sometimes it’s an attempt to change people’s minds. Other times, it is simply to share with the world something that brought them a moment of joy or inspiration. But what about fake news? What empowers people to feel ethically licensed to share information they know to be blatantly untrue? A new study forthcoming in the journal Psychological Science examined people’s motivations for sharing fake news articles. “When a fake news article goes viral, people may encounter it multiple times,” state Daniel Effron and Medha Raj, the lead authors of the study. “Prior research raises the concern that people are more likely to believe a fake news headline if they have seen it before. We propose, however, that regardless of whether one believes a piece of fake news, prior encounters with it can reduce how unethical one thinks it is to spread.” Today In: Innovation To test this hypothesis, the researchers recruited 150 American adults to participate in a short experiment. First, participants were asked to read a series of fake news headlines — for example, “Election Night: Hillary Was Drunk, Got Physical With Mook and Podesta” and “Pennsylvania Federal Court Grants Legal Authority to REMOVE TRUMP After Russian Meddling.” Importantly, participants were told that all of the stories were completely untrue. The researchers then asked participants to complete an unrelated filler task before engaging in the key portion of the experiment. After approximately five minutes had elapsed, the researchers asked participants to read another series fake news headlines. The researchers asked participants to rate how unethical they perceived each story to be, as well as how likely they would be to share the article on social media. The catch was this: some of the headlines were new, while others were the same headlines they had seen earlier in the experiment. They found that participants rated the previously seen headlines as more ethical, and more sharable, than the new headlines. In other words, prior exposure to information acted to legitimize its contents, even when the contents were known to be untrue. A follow-up study replicated this finding in a slightly different context. Instead of exposing participants to headlines one time, they had participants view the headlines four times. In this case, participants were even more likely to indicate that they would share the articles on social media. Furthermore, this effect held true regardless of whether participants were informed that the headlines were fake or not. The researchers believe that repeated exposure to fake news can act to reify its contents. This process is, in some sense, a vicious cycle: the more a fake news headline is seen, the more likely it is to be shared, and the more it is shared, the more likely it is to pass for truth. The researchers write, “These findings represent the first evidence that misinformation receives less moral condemnation when it has been repeated. [...] We speculate that repeating blatant misinformation may reduce the moral condemnation it receives by making it feel intuitively true.”

Mark ZuckerbergMark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan also fell from second place in 2017 (when they gave over $2 billion) to seventh place in 2018, when they gave nearly $214 million through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Donor Advised Fund at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. However, a representative for Zuckerberg points out that this number does not reflect the couple’s total giving for 2018. Since its founding, the initiative has given a total $1.8 billion. |

NAB investigating after Mike Baird exploited in 'fake news' Facebook scamBy Kevin Nguyen Updated 1 Nov 2019, 11:55am National Australia Bank (NAB) is investigating after learning former NSW premier Mike Baird, who is one of its executives, and Waleed Aly are being exploited in a "fake news" scam online. Key points:
The ABC has identified hundreds of Facebook advertisements which use Mr Baird's image and fabricated quotes to plug a "wealth loophole" advising investors to buy bitcoin. The ads direct users to a fake article which attributes reporting to some of Australia's biggest media brands, including the ABC, News Corp and Channel 10's The Project. It cites an interview between Mr Aly, a host on The Project, and Mr Baird. In a statement, a NAB spokesperson said: "We are aware of 'fake news' sites and advertisements that reference Mike Baird and confirm he is not associated with the companies or products mentioned. "We encourage Australians who come across these scam sites to avoid clicking on the links and report where possible to the administrator of platform where the ads are hosted." more.. |
