Whale
, when will this senseless violence towards native animals end? Over
the weekend, patrons were in shock after a kookaburra’s head was ripped
off in front of young children at a suburban Perth tavern. It’s the
latest in a recent series of animal
abuse acts, and current state laws simply cannot keep up.
That’s why 251,115 people are calling for a much-needed animal abuse registry.

What would have happened had the Korean waitress been caught stealing $37,000 from Coffee Club? Deported after release from prison? Coffee Club franchise in hot water for paying just $10 an hour with no pay slipA Coffee Club cafe operator which significantly underpaid a Korean waitress by $37,000 over two years, paying her as little as $10 an hour and no superannuation, will not be prosecuted despite admitting to breaches of workplace laws. Under a deal with the Fair Work Ombudsman, Ji Hae Hong has signed an undertaking that will see her backpay the worker, make a $3000 “contrition payment” to government revenue, engage auditors, and write a letter of apology to the former employee. Ms Hong and Sean & Eddy Pty Ltd, trading as Coffee Club Blacktown, signed the court enforceable undertaking after admitting it underpaid the worker, did not issue her any pay slips or keep her employment records. |

Fair point PT. No excuse for not meeting award wages/conditions. I would expect the practice to be much more prevalent amongst folk running small business from non-Australian backgrounds. Rampant amongst Indian folk. refer Subway, Seven-Eleven, Petrol stations, ect

It seems that many food businesses underpay and exploit their employees. Is it because they are dishonest or also that it is extremely difficult to make a profit paying enormous rents etc?

Bit of a difference amongst some of the examples above. Woolworths would not "knowingly" underpay staff. They got their interpretation of the Award wrong probably based on poor Industrial Law advice. No excuse - just saying - & pay up. Restaurants underpaying was more an industry segment issue. Lot of unusual shifting / late hours resulting in short cuts by a lot of employers - also employees in the main normalised to getting ripped off. Again no real excuse - pay up boys. Versus the culture across a wide range of Indian (& slightly lesser extent Asian) businesses - almost a cultural thing to pay staff whatever they can get away with. Esp utilising overseas students on 20 hour max student visas. Pay them by the book - which satisfies the auditors on inspection. Then either make them work double the hours or take cash back out of the pay each week. Works a treat. The business models set up by many of the franchises are also much to blame - as it does not allow a reasonable financial return by operators UNLESS they rip off staff. It almost assumes they will. And all of the above just makes it harder for those employers out there doing the right thing - they struggle to compete.

Gregory's relegated to memory lane as directory comes to dead endTHE ''glovebox Gregory's'', which has guided Sydneysiders for 75 years, has been published for the last time before being swallowed up by its big brother, the UBD Street Directory. Navman, Whereis.com, Google Maps and other geographical locators have spelt the demise of the directory, which was started by a Bathurst journalist, Cecil Albert Gregory, in 1934 after he came to Sydney to work and had trouble finding his way about. |
