Bit hard to share any bets as I bet in the last 2 minutes before a race start, taking advantage of the latest possible  bookies' odds. Prior to betting on a race I have only a rough idea on what horses I will place my bets, just as it was the days of the commission rooms for high value punters back in the 1980s and 1990s.

100% Stayer. Same guys would always come up to you and shove their tickets in your face whenever they fluked a win.
We had a local taxi driver who lived at the TAB. I reckon he would tell his Mrs he is off to work a 10 hour shift, and head straight into punt mode. At the end of the day, he'd always pick up an airport fare and that did him for the day.

Actually, I more often frequented The Royal, where I sat with my buddies John Kelly and Ashley ?

After a few weeks of John Kelly repeatedly asking who is the best trainer in the world? And who is the best jockey? I would have to switch to the Coach and Horses just for sanity.

By the way...the answers were John Size and JMac...which we duly parroted time after time...

You could never change his mind...

I actually love the older punting brigade. Always good for a laugh.

The young ones, these days, are all about getting sloshed and wearing those awful shirts...

It's hillarious that back in the day TAB's absolutely mirrored themselves. I reckon you could swap a group of 20 blokes and the token sheila out of a Sydney suburban TAB, and put them in a Melbourne TAB, and the same characters would be duplicated, bad breathe, missing teeth and all.

Size is still training, isn't he? He certainly was when JMac started out.

Or are you implying that it was in ancient times when I went to pubs...???????????

Yes, My staking is set up for the second leg, but the first leg bet can change from one horse to another in those last 2 minutes
As far as Fiddles assuming I am a $5 dollar punter I might remind him that my betting is around correct staking so if I was to have $90 on a 10/1 chance I would that $5 , as he correctly intimates, on a 20/1 chance and likewise  $ 200 on a 4/1 chance. Not that I would place $200 on one combination in a daily double very often, whereas $ 90 is not uncommon.

Too complicated for me, Bob, I'll admit. Well it probably isn't but I don't like to think with a Maths brain about horse racing that much. Reminds me of Asians betting on pokies.

Can I ask, did you ever love horse racing? I know you had a system that worked for you before others caught on, but on the sentimental/ hobby level did you like particular races/ horses/ trainers/ breeds etc? It sounds like it was all Maths to you, which is a bit dull. Don't mean to be a nark, just genuinely asking.

You are correct as an actuary student in my earlier days I always took betting as a mathematical exercise and although I knew of all the horses, jockeys , trainers etc it was all about winning money, after all it became my occupation.

Of course I did when I had big wins, I had my best day ever at Echuca races and I have asked my wife to spread some of my ashes there when I meet my maker.

How about tomorrow, you post your bets, and an explanation of the strategy behind each one.

Doesn’t have to be before the first leg jumps.but shortly after would be good.

No one expects a 100% success rate.
So, don’t be shy.

Exactly I was betting on the tote, never touched a bookie. In those days the daily double pool held $ 50,000 let alone trifecta pools over $40,000 a race.

How do you know you're getting unders/overs without a bookie to compare odds to tote ?

Tote is not a true representation of a horses price, maybe after they jump it might be but leading up the race the tote is all over the place.

What is the point of me telling you what daily doubles I have going alive, you cannot benefit by that information.
If I am fortunate and I have got the first leg up in the daily double and you backed all the horses I had going in the second leg of the double that would be pointless as I cover most of the second leg chances in the betting .

You ever see those english greyhounds late at night, sometimes there's no money in the pools at all quite often just 3 dogs will have bets on them and the actual fav could be running around without a bet on it on the tote.

Back in the past even at Echuca there were probably 15 bookies , so the market was pretty reliable, today I use Dynamic odds and Betfair to compare to the tote odds. I do not win bet on the tote and bet on daily doubles where , as you say, the odds are not all over the place.
