Carbon Copy was a high class son of Helios mate , AJC Derby , Cox Plate as a 3 y/o , Sydney Cup and host of WFA races , sire of Grand Print 1962 Sydney Cup and other winners , Beau Gem , leading broodmare sire was another son of his which I'll leave to others with a deeper history of breeding , best I can do for u .

This is an extrqct from an article written by TBV member Progold:

A slew of stars hail from Helios

  • PROGOLD THOROUGHBREDS By ROSS PROWD

Champion racehorse and sire Vain is a descendant of Helios

OVER the past few weeks, we have been looking at the current sires table. I made mention that the concept of leading sire has stood the test time and this prompted me to recall a number of those great stallions that have reigned over the years.

One such stallion is Helios, who was Champion Australian Sire only once, in the 1948-49 season. Perhaps the first son of the great stallion Hyperion to come to Australia, Helios had an interesting history and an enduring legacy.

Helios was foaled in 1937 was raced in England by King George VI. He had only two starts before being purchased Messrs HA and AE Underwood and imported to Australia in 1940.  Unfortunately the stallion was to over-reach when pulling up after trackwork in April 1942 and struck his pastern, breaking it.  The attending veterinary surgeon, Dr Bordeaux, was confident of saving Helios.

At stud, Helios sired a total of 31 stakeswinners. His first foals were born in 1944 and his first stakeswinner was Beau Gem, who won the 1947 Port Adelaide Guineas and VRC Derby.

Beau Gem later went on to win a Turnbull Stakes and two Underwood Stakes. This first crop also included 1948 AJC St Leger winner Cronides and 1949 Goodwood winner Cellarman. It was the stallion’s second crop that produced his best runner in Carbon Copy. Carbon Copy won 13 stakes races, including two Chipping Norton Stakes and the rather unique VRC Derby Cox Plate double in 1948.  Another Helios three-year-old in Bronton also went on to win the Cox Plate in 1951.

Helios was a versatile stallion, although his progeny had little success as two-year-olds. Perhaps his only stakeswinner at this age was the Port Adelaide Sires’ Produce winner Solar Gem.  Among Helios’ other notable stakeswinners were 1953 Melbourne Cup winner Wodalla, Caulfield Guineas and All-Aged Stakes winner Phoibos Grand National Hurdle winner Ross.

Helios made a large impact on breeding, with six of his sons siring stakeswinners their own. One of those, Beau Gem, was sent to the US, where he sired Beau Fond, winner the US Champagne Stakes in 1955.  Carbon Copy gave us the two-yearold VATC Debutante winner

Flight, as well as Sydney Cup and Australian Cup winner Grand Print.

Wodalla, enjoyed success at stud. He may go down as the best sire son of the stallion with 11 stakeswinners, including dual Hobart Cup victor Macdalla.

But the legacy of Helios is best found through his daughters, with two in particular being standouts.

Helios was mated with 1945 Melbourne Cup winner Rainbird to produce Wakeful Stakes winner Raindear. More importantly, this mating also gave us Rain Mist.  This mare produced Shadow, a daughter of Todman, who was also descendant Hyperion. She was mated with Vain to produce Silver Slipper winner Rainbeam, who in turn produced the wonderful son of Century in Centaine.

Centaine sired 58 stakeswinners, including Kinjite, Slight Chance and Stella Cadente. Among the other stakeswinners to trace back to this family are Procrastinate, Time Thief, Been There, Rain Affair and the New Zealand-bred Centennial Park.

The mention of Vain though is not by accident. The other mare we need to address is a daughter of Helios called Rarcamba out the Denis Boy mare Denis Pop.

produced a daughter called Elated, by Orgoglio, who when mated with Wilkes gave us another champion sire in Vain.  Vain needs little introduction to Australian breeders, becoming almost synonymous with speed during the 1970s and ’80s.  As a racehorse, Vain won 12 stakes races in a short career which spanned only his two and three-year old seasons.

Among most famous wins were the Golden Slipper and Caulfield Guineas. At stud he produced 44 stakeswinners, including two Golden Slipper winners in Inspired and Sir Dapper.

Countless modern horses see Vain in their pedigree. Stallions like Testa Rossa and Bel Esprit are notable in his presence and more recently it is a duplication of this stallion the pedigree Black Caviar that has taken the imagination of the public.

Without influence Helios there would be no Vain, and with no Vain there would be no Black Caviar.  It is important that we reflect back on these influences have created the thoroughbred as know it today.

Helios was also three times Champion Australian Broodmare sire.

Note in the above that he broke his pastern. The vet subsequently fitted him with an iron bar!  See his near front in the photo below.

Sorry have no records saying when he died or his height.  The above says it all.  As the sire of the grandam of Vain he set his place in Australian racing history.
