After nearly a year off the scene, this stallion is an acceptor in Race 8 at Caulfield twilight meeting tomorrow.

Hope he can start to realise the potential that he showed as a 3yo in the spring of 2019.

After baffling most thoroughbred experts during a spring carnival that wasn’t to be, Heart Of Puissance is set to kick-start his career as soon as Wednesday at Caulfield.

The four-year-old veteran of just five race starts is no certainty to run at Caulfield on Wednesday because of a potential firm surface but the fact he accepted for the race was a small victory in itself after a sustained period where the horse’s lingering sinus condition prompted much head-scratching.

Co-trainer Dave Eustace said on Monday that instead of sinus troubles, the horse in fact was suffering from a rare mouth disorder.

“He had quite an obscure issue,” Eustace explained. “He jarred up after the All-Star Mile then we got him back in work in the spring and it took a while to get to the bottom of what was happening with him.

“He got quite an unusual issue with his teeth where he has aged gums and it took a long time to get to the bottom of it. It created a sinus infection, which was such a red herring because it didn’t appear to be linked to his mouth.”

Eustace said the one specialist in Victoria that could identify the problem did so on examining the 2019 Sandown Guineas placegetter.

“We feel we’ve got him back on track now to somewhere near that form we saw,” Eustace said. “He had a tooth removed but he’s fine now.”

A winner of just two minor races in five runs, Heart Of Puissance turned heads with his astonishingly wayward but ultimately undeniable effort when fighting back to be a half-length third in the group 2 Sandown Guineas in 2019.

Eustace said the stable hope to make the most of the horse’s low rating. “We think he’s a pretty smart horse, but he’s also rated a 72 so we won’t be get carried away and we’ll just let him go through the grades and hopefully end up in a nice race.

“He’s a four-year-old now so major stud deals might have passed him by but now we’ve got a nice horse and there’s no pressure as he goes forward.”

Heart Of Puissance is down to run over 1400 metres first-up for Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jye McNeil in the final of eight races on the twilight card at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Yes I read it then looked him up to see what he’d been doing since. But that was the end of it.

Dave Eustace confirms on @Racing that Heart of Puissance will be saved for Tuesday's Caulfield meeting. Stable hoping the forecast rain arrives beforehand.

Odds-on for today’s Terang Cup over 2150m.

Should torch this field & be a massive chance for the Warrnambool Cup next month.

If he runs out the 2350m at the Bool strongly, have to have a think about the 2800m Andrew Ramsden Stks after that.

Probably getting a bit ahead of myself, but after the health issues this guy has endured, I’d love to see him excel.

It's a shame he is not heading to Queensland and those second string group 1 contests.

Heart Of Puissance will be saved up for rain-affected ground as trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace plot a path towards the Warrnambool Cup.

The stable has earmarked the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Heath (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday, or the $70,000 Terang Cup (2150m) on Sunday for the lightly-raced son of Puissance De Lune.

The four-year-old, held back due to repeat injuries, including a degenerative gum disease, roared back to top form last start with a blistering 4-1/2 length win at Warwick Farm.

“He actually broke the class record there on a soft track,” Eustace said.

“We have always had a high opinion of him, he’ll have one run before the Warrnambool Cup, if the ground allows or, if it stays dry up until Warrnambool, he’ll go straight into it.”

Despite a trophy cabinet brimming with Cups, Stakes and Plates, the hometown Warrnambool Cup has eluded Maher.

A point not lost on stable insiders, including Eustace and Maher’s brother Declan.

“I was speaking to Dec about that (not having a Warrnambool Cup), Ciaron‘s brother,” Eustace said.

“He’s (Ciaron) barely had a runner in it actually.

“I don’t think the right horse has really ever presented.

“I can’t recall, while working for Ciaron, to actually have a live chance but I think we’ll have a couple of nice chances in it this year.”

The re-emergence of Heart Of Puissance, coupled with his low benchmark rating of 80, relative to potential, has boosted stable confidence towards the Warrnambool Cup.

He will likely be joined at the three-day May carnival by South Pacific, another genuine wet-tracker, and Grand Promenade.

Both horses placed at Caulfield last Saturday.

“We‘ll have three good chances for the races,” Eustace said.

“Wet tracks and getting him (Heart Of Puissance) to 2000 metres and above is where we’ll see the best of him, he’ll really stay that horse, he’ll stay extreme trips, if we get him out to that.

“We think he’s well handicapped for a race like that, big prizemoney, a good race to target.

“He’s a horse that’s got the most upside … he’s still racing at benchmark 78-80, so that sees him get in well at the weights, if he doesn’t run again.”

The Brisbane winter carnival is another option for Heart Of Puissance, again weather permitting.

“He‘s well-travelled now … we’ll just have to follow the weather a bit,” Eustace said.

Maher and Eustace will have several runners at Caulfield on Saturday, including Fanciful Toff (Gold Heath), Junipal (Gold Mile), How Womantic (Gold Sprint) and The Big Easy (Gold Dash).

Terang does have a pretty long straight, so assume Harry thought he’d pick up quicker than he did & reel in the leaders.

Closed off ok, so you’d press onto the Warrnambool Cup, but still disappointing today.

Both went for the same run and whilst there was plenty of contact reckon it was a 50-50 affair with HoP going the better and thus getting the run.

Most probably a caution or at worst three metro meetings imo.

Agree it's open to interpretation.  All will hopefully be revealed in the Stewards Report.

ockey John Allen has had his Warrnambool experience soured after stewards suspended him for 20 meetings for reckless riding aboard Warrnambool Cup runner-up Heart Of Puissance.

Allen, who has won two Grand Annual Steeplechases on this day in recent years on Regina Coeli before becoming solely a flat rider, pleaded guilty to the charge. Stewards said he shifted ground near the 300-metre mark, causing interference to South Pacific.

His penalty begins on Sunday night.

Mark Zahra joined the long list of jockeys who will be starting suspensions from Saturday night out of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival after stewards found him guilty of a careless riding charge on Thursday.

Zahra pleaded not guilty but was suspended for 12 meetings for careless riding aboard Lion's Share in the fifth event.

Like fellow riders Damien Oliver, Damian Lane and Declan Bates, who were suspended over the first two days of the carnival, Zahra begins his suspension from Saturday night.

Melissa Julius will also join those riders on the sidelines as she was also suspended on Thursday, for nine meetings for careless riding in Race 5.

Grand Annual winner Clayton Douglas was given a $1000 fine for a whip breach on winner Gold Medals.

John Allen (Heart Of Puissance) Pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(a), being that near the 300m he rode his mount into a position  where there was insufficient room to do so to the outside of Constantinople (IRE) making contact with South Pacific resulting in that gelding becoming severely unbalanced and being hampered. John Allens licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence at midnight 9 May 2021 involving three metropolitan meetings.

Notwithstanding that I backed him yesterday, it was fantastic to see HOP winning handsomely at Flemington yesterday.

After his nasty mouth & gum issues, hopefully he can really go on with it & fulfil his potential.

Sounds like he’s heading towards the Banjo Patterson Hcp over 2600m at Flemington in early July.
