Nominations out today.

I think most of the interest around this race this year is it's boost to a million dollar purse, no doubt inspired by the Sydney Melbourne arms race, with the re-started St Leger in Sydney being over 2600m and also a SW+P race but worth $500k.  The following is from racing.com and doesn't exactly present as a field worthy of running for $1 million.

The Moonee Valley Gold Cup has been boosted in prizemoney this year going up to $1 million and will be a key lead up towards the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Macedon Lodge will nominate a few runners in King Of Leogrance, Pondus, Dawn Patrol and have booked Jye McNeil to ride for them.

Popular galloper Floating Artist will line up here instead of the Geelong Cup.

Has the boost in prize money to $1.0m attracted the field the MVRC were hoping for?  I’d suggest not & I’m not really sure what the motivation to double the prize money from 2020 to 2021 was?

At least it’s not the worst $1m race being run in Australia on Saturday.  The Bondi Stakes in Sydney takes the cake there.

There have always been too many well staked staying races at this time of year.  In 18 days we have the Caulfield Cup, the Geelong Cup, the MV Cup, the Bendigo Cup, the Hotham and the Melbourne Cup... too many.

It isn't so bad when there are 15 to 20 international raiders in town.  That forces the better locals into races like the Geelong, MV and Bendigo Cups but take them away and the quality gets very thin.

Exactly Tontonan.  And some of those races can be a bit thin even with the raiders here.
