Looks an exciting race as usual, so many chances I reckon I could make a case for at least a half dozen, the 3 year olds are not a stand out crop this season for mine, I'm thinking one of the older horses down in the weights may be ones to look at.

Funstar headlines leading trainer's Doncaster assault

 by Mitch Cohen

One-time favourite Funstar is set to fly the flag for the Chris Waller camp in next Saturday's Doncaster Mile however the trainer is holding out hope the mare can be joined by one of his emerging three-year-olds.

A year after saddling up eight runners in the $3 million feature including runner-up Star Of The Seas, Waller’s is poised to field a significantly smaller team in 2021.

“We probably just have Funstar,” Waller said.

“In previous years I would have been enticed by a horse like Shared Ambition after winning on Saturday and Mister Sea Wolf with the likes of Kolding or Star of The Seas.

Sydney Racing

“But it is really hard on them. They are carrying big weights and the horses down in the weights coming through the grades have such a big advantage.

“I think I will keep most of those old boys home.”

Group 1 winner Funstar hasn’t tasted a victory since the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes more than 12 months ago and is coming off an eighth in the George Ryder Stakes when she found trouble in the straight.

Waller believes she can bounce back with a lightweight of 52kg in the Doncaster with Craig Williams booked to ride.

“Funstar hasn’t had much luck,” Waller said.

“She is just like Hungry Heart and she needs that sniff of a victory or a confidence booster to get her right in it.”

While Funstar is his stable’s top seed, Waller was also keen for his three-year-old Wheelhouse to join the daughter of Adelaide.

Wheelhouse is down in 72nd spot in the Doncaster order of entry and would need a high attrition rate to earn a start.

Waller has decided not to push on towards the Australian Derby with Wheelhouse, which is $15 in betting, in favour of the keeping the son of Pierro over shorter trips after he finished fifth in the Rosehill Guineas behind Mo’unga.

“He has pulled up well but I think he struggled to stay the other day,” Waller said.

“We would like him to get into the Doncaster and if he doesn’t get in he will run in the Carbine Club.

“He is just a typical lightweight three-year-old that would certainly have his chance based on my experience.

“I would love him to make the field and if he doesn’t, he doesn’t.”

Wheelhouse is a $101 chance in the Doncaster.

If we can draw a line through most of the Waller runners Mo'unga should make the field easily.

Alright we have a field of 18 with four emergencies.

Waller has said his only older horse showing up is Funstar, so his other older horses are not showing up so that gets rid of Verry Elleegant, Humidor, Kolding, Imaging, Star Of The Seas, Subpeonaed and Fiesta out.

Horse whose trainers have said are not being aimed at the race are Sir Dragonet, Collette, Avantage, Mr Quickie, Fifty Stars, Age Of Chivalry and Plumatic are not showing up and I am hearing if he scrapped in Olmedo will not be here.

Horses from last week like Rock, Buffalo River, Dawn Passage and Shared Ambition are not certain to start.

So that to my view means that 15 to 19 out of the top 42 are not going to be running.

To me that puts the 44 to 50 nominees on the edge of the emergencies. Forbidden Love's connections will be nervous, although personally I do not think she can win if she makes the race, and fresh into the Legacy would be ideal.

I assume the track will be back to normal for Sydney? 7,8,9 or 10?

A day or so ago a lot of rain was predicted for the next few days.

However I see the latest forecast is for 8-15mm tomorow and also the same for Wednesday but after that not much.

She is a typical Waller inmate.

Bred to stay 4000m but because she is a classy conveyance she shows speed and that totally kisss Waller up.

I know it's a handicap but is Mugatoo getting in a little light for a horse that should've won a Cox Plate? Either way he's my tip.

How is the Boss going to handle starting out in the car park?

Same with Mo'unga, good horse who will be starting in the grandstand

Wide barriers have a great record in these big Randwick mile handicaps.

Watch the track pattern of earlier races. If the winners are coming out wide or swoopers it may well even be an advantage to be drawn wide.

Anyone else give Best of Days a chance here? Down in the weights and has been going long pretty well this prep.

Incidentally how bad does it look that a big breeding operation like Godolphin can only muster up GB bred horses for the biggest mile race in this country?
