Out of the last 100 majors how many have Australians won?

Majors aren't the be-all of who is the best golfer...
There have been major winners no-one even remembers...Lucas Glover? Danny Willett? the answer, by the way, is three... Geoff Ogilvy (2006 US Open), Adam Scott (2013 Masters) and Jason Day (2015 PGA). before that we had Steve Elkington, Greg the Shark (2), Ian Baker-Finch, Wayne Grady, David Graham (2), Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson (5). not bad, considering so many nationalities play golf. |

Yes, one major win is probably just a fluke artist. Unfortunately that accounts for nearly all Australian major winners from modern history.

They are pretty well-credentialed golfers, Tlaz.
The Elk, Grades, Baker-Finch, Scott and Ogilvy might be fluke-artists, but The Shark should have won more than two majors. David Graham was better than many give credit...winning two majors, the World Cup with Devlin and the Piccadilly Match play, as well as multiple other tournaments. Jason Day has been world number one in his time. Now Cam Smith is coming into his prime and should take out quite a few events. |

In both men's & women's golf we are right up there. In the Mens the yanks are miles ahead of everyone - Sth African s probably second & us third. Sth Koreans miles ahead in the Womens & again we are probably in the mix for third or 4th.
Pretty good considering i would have thought.

totally agree, oneone.
We are more a swimming/ surfing/ football presence in world sport. To have so many good golfers is an achievement. Better results than some other more notable countries...eh...like Nick Faldo's homeland. |

his father was quite ill, before he was 'holidayed'. I'm sure that whatever is the cause of his extended leave...he will 'do a MacArthur' and return. PT is banking on it. |

We have had this happen to 2 major sports here, Rugby League and cricket on 2 occasions. With RL, the sport split in 2 but came back together and is arguably better now for it, here and in UK.
Cricket split when Kerry Packer bought half of world's top players and formed a professional league, World Series Cricket. It merged back into the original setup after a couple of years. Cricket was also split with the formation of the Indian Premier League, which also threatened to destroy the game. It hasn't and it along with another dozen professional leagues co-exists with tradition cricket and has in fact become a major transition and opportunity for players into traditional test cricket. Might be a good thing ultimately, depending on the setup.

As golf writer Will Bardwell has detailed, the Saudis’ game here is not complicated. It is a straightforward exercise in sportswashing,
where the government is trying to distract from its authoritarianism
and oil with golf. Focus on the nine irons, not the bonesaws. https://slate.com/culture/2022/02/golf-saudi-tour-liv-pga-tour-challenge-mickelson-dechambeau.html

Cricket is starting to show signs of distress. BBL is waning as is traditional one day game. Loss of free to air coverage in some areas of the game not helping. And now women's game competing. Season too long going well into Feb when other sports like NRL being hyped up. Think the game is starting to show what happens when you splinter it & get greedy.

Golf history! Aussie star Hannah Green becomes first woman to win pro mixed-gender eventAustralian golfer Hannah Green has made history as the first woman to win a professional, full-length mixed-gender tournament, claiming the $200,000 TPS Murray River by four shots. Green, the 2019 Women’s PGA champion, took the win in a field featuring some of Australia’s best male and female golfers at Cobram Barooga Golf Club. It’s the first time a woman has won a 72-hole mixed tournament at this level... |

A magnificent achievement in anyone's language. Women's golf has improved out of sight in recent years - & their short game is very close to matching the men.
The above article heading is a touch misleading though. The men & women played off different tee's to allow for driving difference between the two. Also should note Hannah is a class act - currently ranked 30th in the world. I doubt if any of her male opponents ranked in the top 500 (haven't checked though)

"They're scary motherf***ers to get involved with," Mickelson said of the Saudi government. "They killed [Washington Post reporter Jamal] Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. "Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates." A magnificent achievement? Don’t be ridiculous. She won a LPGA a few years back, and earned more than 20 times than she did to win this Mickey Mouse tournament. |

Well its never been done before to my knowledge. I think the sentiment in my post was that she was a class above in relative world ranking terms. However they boys were hardly hackers. Papadatos , Miller, Green & Stoltz go pretty well. And that young gun Dobbelaar is ear marked to be a future gun
So credit were credit is due Rusty - you will have JJ give you a serve if you keep that up

Yeah, fair point. I jumped all over your first comment. You did clarify the boys are hardly world class, so my bad.

Great stuff.
And local Bendigo boy Lucas Herbert pockets US$40k-odd for finishing 2nd last after pocketing US$360k for an equal 6th or 7th finish last week.
