Noticed the last race at Sandown (I still call the tracks by their “real” names) was named after a much loved horse Samson. Thoughts on him. Also another two Sandown horses I can recall were Imperial Prince (?) and Stainvita. Both prolific Sandown winners who shared a sad legacy. Both died on the track. Carioca and others could shed some light on these and other Sandown specialists.

Hi Majestic , I do remember all those mentioned especially Samson, an absolute marvel who carried massive weights when the min. was the weight of a church mouse , he loved the big open spaces of tracks like Sandown but somehow when he went to Brisbane for the winter carnivals he handled Doomben too if my memory's correct , a much loved horse in the days of Bert Bryant ( race caller ) who couldn't stop raving about him , Stainvita , a Sandown specialist ridden by Roy Higgins was a huge horse who loved the wet tracks , sadly snapped a shoulder at Sandown on the 24- 7 - 78 , anybody who can dig the story up in the AGE on that date written by Tony Kennedy will give you the whole story of what happened and the work Chief Steward put in with track staff to remedy the situation , Imperial Boy , very quick , muddier who also loved the Valley , Bert Bryant use to say " he's got the giggles , he heard a tap running " some memories there Majestic .

You are quite right re the Imperial horse. He was a 7/8 year old stallion and was having his “last” start before retirement when he snapped a leg. Have a feeling a Mrs Warke (?) was the owner.

For some reason Rollick comes to mind so did a search to find: Over the years, a number of horses have taken a liking to the Sandown track. Samson won six more times after that first win, a record that stood for some years, until Surprise Leigh equalled that amount of wins nearly 10 years later. These days, the record of most wins at Sandown is held by Luther’s Nine, a horse from the late 1980s.
I think they'd mean Luther's Luck |

I'm sure they meant Luthers Luck Gay , Rollick held the 5 furlong record at Sandown , about 55-5 secs. it was Stainvita who snapped a shoulder at Sandown , Kel Chapman trained , Nearest was another who liked the track too trained by Ray Hutchins .

Cheers Carioca & I'm sure Imperial Boy was trained by Bill Warke, which would make sense given his wife owned him.

Am obliged to digress. Posted this in another thread:
Samson was supposedly well past his best when my Uncle Roy entered a gelding named Fingerprint for the open sprint at Sandown many years ago. Ours was a classy galloper who'd lost his zest for racing after a number of poor performances, but was revitalized after a long spell. Fingerprint was backed for a virtual fortune from 66/1 into single figure odds and as a youngster I had $20 each way at the opening price which promised a huge result so long ago. Well Kel's horse beat us by 3/4 length, with about 5 lengths back to 3rd place. It was the first of the supposedly "over the top" Samson's many resurgent Sandown victories. |

Great to see the races at Sandown today all named after horses that were prolific winners at Sandown.
Vo Rogue & Luther’s Luck are the only 2 to race in my lifetime, plus the still active Kalashani Lad. But have read stories about the likes of Samson & the ill-fated Stainvita. Confess that Surprise Leigh is one I’ve never heard of - anyone know her story?
