A lot of these horses ran yesterday, so will likely be a smallish field.

Wilde accepting with Tralee Rose but won't run if track is firm.

The Cranbourne stable of Busuttin & Young will also saddle up Mirage Dancer in Wednesday’s Geelong Cup before deciding if they push on to a start in the Melbourne Cup.

Mirage Dancer has been sold and will stand at stud in Ireland at the end of this preparation and currently is 17th in order of entry for the Melbourne Cup.

“He will go to the Geelong Cup if he draws a gate if not the Bendigo Cup,” Young said.

“We are trying to find the softer option to get a win with this horse before he goes to Ireland

“If he runs one, two or three he can carry onto the Cup but personally on the way his working I think he should run well.”

Thankfully the Geelong Cup does not earn an automatic start in the Melbourne Cup.

It’s a long way from Naracoorte in SA’s South East, to Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, but Sue Murphy is daring to dream.

Stable star Hasta La War will press his claims for a berth in the race that stops a nation, in Wednesday’s Group 3 Geelong Cup.

“I always joke and say, ‘oh maybe the Melbourne Cup’, then you think one day it might happen, and he’s the horse that could,” Murphy said.

An impressive third in the G2 Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield ten days ago only affirmed Murphy’s strong opinion of her beloved gelding.

“His run last start was super, fitness wise he’s spot on, haven’t had to do much with him,” Murphy said.

If Hasta La War can win Geelong’s feature race on Wednesday, he’ll attract a weight penalty which could help him secure a Melbourne Cup start – and become the first ever horse trained in South East South Australia to do so.

“It’s very special and it’s exciting, you get the nerves up every time he runs, because you know he gives 110 per cent,” Murphy said.

“We just go day by day, it’s something you can’t get your head around at the moment.”

Having a horse in the race that stops a nation would unquestionably be a career highlight for Murphy, whose first winner came back in 1994.

Hasta La War was being aimed at last year’s Cup, but a tendon injury forced a 14 month lay-off.

With better luck this time around, Murphy believes Hasta La War wouldn’t just be making up the numbers on the first Tuesday in November.

“Anything over 2000m plus, he’s right in it, I’ve always said this horse will just run – the further the better,” she said.

“He’s not just a grinder, he can run really good sectionals.

“When you hop on him and send him out, when he gets to that second lap he says ‘come on let’s go’, and I have to say ‘no we don’t’.”

Linda Meech will again partner Hasta La War on Wednesday, a move that Murphy hopes will pay off.

“They call him the ladies’ man, he seems to go better for the female jockeys,” Murphy said with a laugh.

“He’s beautiful natured, you like these horses.”

Wednesday’s Geelong Cup also features several other Melbourne Cup hopefuls including Tralee Rose, and Le Don De Vie.

Tralee Rose is a $2.60 favourite with Sportsbet, while Hasta La War is $6.50.

Now I’ll just sit back and watch the dream unfold LOL

Probably right Bonjour. Was going to say the prize money boost to the MV Cup might have had an effect on the Geelong Cup runners, but then looked at the MV Cup field & it’s not much better!

For the record will be cheering Hasta La War to win today, get a penalty & be Naracoorte’s first Melb Cup runner.

Hope some got the all-in $4.  Have taken the Incentivise/Tralee Rose CC/MC double so will at least get a run for my money, but suspect she might have her work cut out.

Amade was the eye catcher running on from last after blowing the start.  I doubt he'll be making the Melbourne Cup field without winning the Hotham though.

The right decision was made by Greg to not issue a weight penalty, the winning margin was only half a length. This means Tralee Rose will carry 51kg in the Melbourne Cup. Media Puzzle (2002), Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011) are the only three horses to do the Geelong Cup/Melbourne Cup double. Other Geelong Cup winners - Prince Of Arran (2019), Bauer (2008), On A Jeune (2005), Mr Brooker (1990), Koiro Corrie May (1985), Chagemar (1984) placed in the Melbourne.

2009: Crime Scene ran 6th in the Geelong Cup and went on to run 2nd in the Geelong Cup.

2003: She's Archie ran 2nd in the Geelong Cup and went on to run 2nd in the Melbourne Cup.

1984: Black Knight ran 2nd in the Geelong Cup and went on to win the Melbourne Cup.
