Well done Take2,
I will say that I am going to change the rules next comp (including the Autumn and Spring) - roughies must be roughies please.... Roughie: A horse at long odds which is considered to have only a remote chance of winning a race. I am open to discussion on exactly what price is considered "long odds". |

Well yesterday I did have a $7 pop which got 4th and a 16/1 3rd, My real long shot 25/1 got 2nd last. I think people are choosing the favourite two they want and just putting the longest in for the roughie. I thought Montifilia was well overs at 16/1. Would that be long enough?

How about position in pre post market? This would avoid people choosing the 2nd pick that might well be 6/1 where you have an odds on favourite Or a combo of both?

Which market would you choose? Lots of different betting companies and apps being used to bet with, people would be looking at slightly different odds.

Some horses are long when only 5/1. Imagine Winx at 5/1. Sometimes you can get the top class early 4yo like Montifilia at 16/1. She didn't deserve that figure but is that long enough. I do judge and find the one we think is overs. How do you think I ended up with Realm of Flowers. I thought she was about a 15/1 shot. Little do I know with her finish. Likewise on his last run I though Esta la Roca should of been 5/1 - so long for him in my eyes. It just gets tricky Dizzy.

Also appart from Think it Over at 13/4 Take2 won with 9/1 3rd, 50/1 2nd. He also had a 40/1 last and 11/1 5th. Probably really wanted Think it Over and didn't like any of the true roughies. On his comeback run Think it Over should of been shorter anyway.

Does it really matter? From memory the winners of the roughies comp have always done so courtesy of a genuinely long priced winner or two.
But I'm happy to go with the majority opinion.

I say leave it as it is, maybe Dizzy is just being a sore loser for scoring zero??

I am just over people picking the short priced favourites as their "roughies".
That is not the point of the comp. And I do the same MK, and have had success or zeros....

Me too Dizzy so last comp I went with the flow & put the same horse in for both which seemed to work better.

You also have the problem of fluctuating odds. When I tipped Dawn Patrol in the Roughies he was showing about $15 on the tote, but good money for him saw him start at odds of $7.

I know and understand, still drives me nuts when you have a short priced favourite as a roughie. If you can't even be bothered to look for something at odds, don't pick anything.
But as you all are happy to go on as we are, let's leave it be. Happy to continue without upsetting the milk cart. And Shawy, I am so often on a duck egg, yesterday's results are normal for me. I just cannot see the point of having a roughies comp when everyone picks short(ish) odds...maybe rename it to Winners and Second Picks?

A genuine roughie is highly likely to be outside 4th position in betting whatever the cutoff time. Going on price is too field & dominant fav dependent.

Dizzy maybe next year a Rule amendment - make it that you must choose a separate horse as your Roughie, and it must be longer odds than your first Winner selection, or something like that. Plenty of time to put some thought into ironing it out.
