The winner is an ordinary handicapper from Europe. Comes to Australia and wins a G1

Brew was an ordinary handicapper from Australia when he won the group 1 Melbourne Cup Jamal. It happens that's why it's a handicap!

Selino was not just a ordinary handicapper, he was a horse going through his grades and was a genuine group performer.

When he left England for Australia he was rated 7 pounds superior to what Favourite Moon left England with.

And he won yesterday with 50 kgs.

If anybody thinks he was an ordinary handicapper before yesterday he is still an ordinary handicapper today.

I doubt he gets a run in the Melbourne Cup unless they change the rules.

1st

SELINO

Ron Stewart

He was a tough ride but it kept unfolding nicely for us. It certainly wasn’t easy, he was quite strong throughout, but I could see that in his replays, he has done that in the past, but when I pulled out down the side with about 1000m to go I still had plenty of horse there and I thought okay we have no weight on our back - catch me if you can.

2nd

RONDINELLA

Andrew Adkins

Huge effort. Beaten by a better one on the day. Hit the line exceptionally well.

3rd

MIAMI BOUND

Craig Williams

She did an amazing job. Under the circumstances from the bad barrier in a slow, stop, start affair and stayed on really well. Gallant third.

4th

SHE'S IDEEL

Rachel King

Really good run over this trip for the first time. Got held up around the turn.

5th

REALM OF FLOWERS

Damien Thornton

Ran good. Got shuffled too far back on the corner when the race changed complexion.

6th

THE CHOSEN ONE

Hugh Bowman

A better draw would have helped but beaten on his merits.

7th

GOOD IDEA

Ben Thompson

He was just too aggressive through the run. Found a nice spot but even though covered up, his staying ability had him stick on but lacked a sprint.

8th

SOUTHERN FRANCE

James McDonald

Just whacked away. Good run.

9th

SOUND

Brenton Avdulla

He tried hard. Had a lovely run, followed the winner, just wasn’t good enough.

10th

SACRAMENTO

Kathy O'Hara

He was a little on the bridle. Suggestion to take the blinkers off over that trip.

11th

SPIRIT RIDGE

Robbie Dolan

Probably best at 2000m, blinkers on.

12th

HUSH WRITER

Tim Clark

Wide the entire trip. Probably doesn’t stay the trip but that run doesn’t help.

13th

FAVORITE MOON

Kerrin McEvoy

Just pulled at stages during the race.

14th

CHAPADA

Glen Boss

Didn’t run the trip.

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Of course the famous Sir Tristram (sire of Zabeel among many others) and Horlicks a Japan Cup winner. If ever a horse was bred to win a Melbourne Cup it was Brew but correct me if I'm wrong Gay but he raced his whole career in Aus did he not? So he was an Aus handicapper.

I remember him toiling through the winter Benchmarks (or equivalent back then) and making not much of an impact. He was very ordinary. Still won a Melbourne Cup with a lightweight.

Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

I'm sure he had a couple of runs very early in his career in his place of birth , I wouldn't mind betting Paul Moroney ( brother of Michael ) may have recommended this horse as a " buy" for future racing in OZ.

That formline contains something that would be astronomical odds of happening
Jason Patton
Kerrin mcevoy
Brett Prebble all brothers in law all rode and all placed  on Brew, JP and Kerrin Mcevoy won on him and Brett Prebble finished 2nd
when i first read it i was 1/2 expecting to see Paddy or Andrew, or one of the Girls bob up as well

Racing trivia question??
