Woods was a lot more dominant than Nicklaus on the PGA tour. Jack won 12.5% of the time, Tiger 23% of the time. Must have been over 30% before he flamed out with marital and health issues. I don't have that stat. |

But stats do not tell the whole story.
If you play in an era of champions, you might not win as many tournaments. When Woods came along, his main opponent was Mickelson. Although he won quite a few tournaments by big scores, if you look at the names of those who ran second, there are not many outright 'champions' among them. Good golfers, but not great ones. Whereas Palmer and Nicklaus played against some elite golfers. |

I agree with JJ
I said many moons ago that the Tiger era was the weakest. Ernie Els has been a good player & Phil a great but most of who Tiger beat weβre guys on the decline who were also behind the 8 ball in the technology change that took place Always a good discussion though with no correct answer apart from our ownπ€ͺ

An interesting point on Phil, he won his first PGA tour event in 1991 and had 21 of them before his first major in 2004

If Woods can finish 6th or better in the 2034 Masters plus add another 3 Majors in the interim I'm willing to listen. As Jack did in the 1998 Masters.
JJ makes a good point about the competition within each players era needing to be considered, during Jacks period, Jack had Gary Player (9 total Majors) Tom Watson (8) and Arnold Palmer (7) all winning and competing in majors for at least part of the 24 years seperating his first and last major title. The best doing the same for Tigers were Phil Mickelson (6) Brooks Koepka (5) and Ernie Els/Rory McIllroy (4). Worth noting that Jack also had Lee Trevino (6) and Seve Ballesteros (5) and Raymond Floyd (4) matching those numbers in his era. Jacks major winning era lasted 24 years, with a gap of 6 years from his second last to his last, Woods era lasted 22 years, with a gap of 11 years between second last and last.

Seeing Manchester United relegated would mean more than words can describe to me.

I see it the other way.
In Jacks era there were 1/2 dozen that racked up majors. The fields are much deeper now, imo

Not sure Iβd use Brooks as a yardstick for Tigers career. They certainly over lap but Iβd say that Tiger was pretty much finished by the time Brooks broke out in 2015 to win his first PGA event and 2018 for his first major.

Just bringing in players who won majors within each of the top 2 guys eras, Arnold Palmer was at the tail of his when Jack started as well.

Loved watching Arnie. Always entertaining.
However good Nicklaus was, he could actually be boring to watch. Same as Faldo/ Fargo... Thank you, Byron Nelson. It's all subjective. But just going on stats does not tell the real truth. |
