From shoes to horses: Mance had the Midas touch

Greg Mance, a man described as “one of the greatest gentlemen you’d ever come across” who achieved much in life, lost his battle against ill health and died aged 74 on Tuesday.

Mance, is best known in racing circles as the trainer of Cole Diesel, and the irony of his passing on Tuesday was not lost as it was 31 years to the day since the Moonee Valley Racing Club’s controversial decision to exclude the grey two-time Group 1 winner from the Cox Plate.

The MVRC committee declared Cole Diesel was not up to weight-for-age standard. Leading up to his Cox Plate exclusion the horse had won his previous two starts in the Toorak Handicap and Caulfield Cup.

Prior to the Group 1 victories he had been successful earlier in the year in Sydney during the spring in the Group 3 Shannon Handicap and Group 3 Tramway Handicap after winning the Group 2 Queensland Guineas during the winter.

Cole Diesel’s regular jockey during 1989 was Michael Kerr, who has fond memories of that time during his riding career.

“To deny a horse that had just previously won two Group One races, including one of the hardest races on the Australian calendar, just shows how different it was back then,” Kerr said. “Mind boggling, just ridiculous.

“Here we are 30-odd years on, and they’d be pleading with the trainer to run a horse with a record like Cole Diesel’s in the race this year.

“I will be forever grateful to Greg for the opportunities he afforded me when I was his stable rider. He gave me the biggest highlight of my racing career.

“It was a handshake arrangement, and we had some wonderful times together.

“He was a man that really loved his horses.”

Caulfield trainer Clinton McDonald and his family have been close friends with Greg and his wife Diane for many years and he paid tribute to Mance the man and the horse trainer.

“Greg was a great trainer, and he did things different to most,” McDonald said.

“He would only pay an average price for horses. From memory the dearest price he ever paid for one was $26,000 for Oppressor and he had a number of good horses over the years.

“It’s insane when you look back and think a horse like Cole Diesel couldn’t get into the Cox Plate just 31 years ago and now the race has been won by a maiden (Shamus Award) and this year a horse (Grandslam) is running which has only won a benchmark 64 handicap.

“They’ve (the MVRC) lowered their standards a bit over the years haven’t they.

In 2012, Mance was an inaugural inductee in the Gold Coast Turf Club Hall Of Fame.

Mance had battled Parkinson’s disease for many years before his death.

In his field of work, he took over the family business in the 1970s from his father Clarry – that business – Windsor Smith, which is now one of Australia’s best-known shoe brands, before handing over the reins to his children during the 1980s to train his team of racehorses.

“One of the greatest gentlemen you’d ever come across,” McDonald said. “He was a wonderful man. He was one of those people that you couldn’t help but like.

“He had a real aura around him and had the amazing gift of being successful at whatever he tried his hand at.

“You never heard a bad word said about him, he was a gentleman in every way and would help anyone in need. Early in my life, he helped my career out. When I was starting out with a breaking-in business, he supported me 110 per cent.

“He will be sadly missed, and our condolences go out to Di and his family.”

In a life well lived, Mance was also a farmer — a sheep man, that at one point was one of the nation’s major merino owners.

Mance is survived by wife Di, his children Craig, Lea and Brett and grandchildren.
