I have been collecting everything I could find on Phar Lap since 1968 when I was 8 years old. I love him so much. I have never been able to visit him in Melbourne but I know I would cry if I saw him. He is the standard to which every other horse has been matched to. When you consider everything he had to deal with back then, overworked, overaced, he won suffering from colic, he frequently had kidney problems. still won, no barrier stalls, huge weights, 68kg in the 1931 Cup. Imagine given todays veterinary advances, better tracks, more vigilant stewards and fairer weights what he could do.
What an absolute legend.
My second favourites behind him.

Today is October the 4th, the 93rd anniversary of the legendary Phar Lap. Born in Timaru New Zealand by Night Raid from Entreaty. From the same sire as Nightmarch, winner of the 1929 Melbourne Cup.
The Legend will live forever, should have won 3 Cups, it took a grand little mare called Makybe Diva to do .
Long Live Big Red.
