Gavin B is probably still learning about the horse & based on today’s performance I guess he learned to avoid wet tracks with SB in the future.
Today he was pretty ordinary but still think there was enough in his first few runs this prep to show he’s not totally a spent force.

So lightly raced, such a shame.
18 starts for 5 wins & 3 placings - $1.037m in prize money. Was certainly exciting when he emerged from obscurity in 2019 but never really scaled the heights I thought he might have.

Seems like a waste when Pruesker only wanted to aim him at the one race

New career for Surprise BabyBen Sporle@bensporle The rollercoaster career of Surprise Baby has come to an end. The 2020 Melbourne Cup favourite, who was unlucky not to have claimed the nation's biggest race 12 months earlier, has been retired. Surprise Baby had his final four starts in the care of Cranbourne-based trainer Gavin Bedggood after suffering a hairline fracture which kept him on the sidelines for 12 months. "He had obviously reached his pinnacle and (was) probably unlucky not to have won a Melbourne Cup," Bedggood said. "His injury was well publicised and even though there was no issues with the horse, we were just of the belief that he was never going to climb the scale that he did in previous campaigns. "We didn't want to be seen as just sending him around so in his best interest we decided he would be retired." Passed in for $20,000 at the 2016 Karaka Sales, owner John Fiteni paid $5500 for the son of Shocking via online auction site Gavelhouse. After winning his first two starts for trainer Paul Preusker, Surprise Baby quickly rose to prominence when he claimed the Adelaide Cup at his sixth career start. He would then finish second after a sterling battle in the Andrew Ramsden with Steel Prince but later secured his Melbourne Cup ticket by winning The Bart Cummings. The seven-year-old finished 11th in his final race, the Chairmans Handicap at Randwick last month. Surprise Baby has been rehomed and will be ridden as a pony club horse. |

Another case of what could have been. Super talented horse who didn't have luck on his side. Such a tough game. Hope he has a long and healthy retirement.
