Somewhat harsh for taking an appetite suppressant I would've thought. Particularly compared with a host of slaps on the wrist that have been dealt out for other offences.

Chief steward at the Caulfield meeting, Robert Cram, said after the inquiry was completed on Tuesday that would not reveal the substance, as per normal stewards policy, but said it was a banned stimulant and not the diuretic Maloney admitted to when he stood himself down from riding at the March 31 meeting.

Cram said stewards gave consideration to charging Maloney with offering false evidence on that day but said that given the sensitivities involved with the case and the fact that Maloney had shown contrition and had 'self-reported' on the day and stood himself down, stewards instead applied a stern warning.
"We've made it very clear that you should be diligent in respect of the evidence you tender," Cram told Maloney. Much of the evidence presented at the hearing on Tuesday was held in camera after Cram asked the media to leave the hearing so as to hear sensitive information surrounding the circumstances of Maloney producing the positive urine test. Maloney, who has been riding for 15 years and estimated he takes between 20-25 every week, made little comment during the hearing but before the suspension was announced he said: "I've done the wrong thing. I'll cop whatever penalty is imposed." Cram said the four-month penalty, backdated to the start of April, had conditions that Maloney provide a clean sample to stewards as well as seek professional help for personal issues. He said the 32-year-old rider would be permitted to ride trackwork upon agreeing to those conditions and Maloney replied that he was ready to produce a urine sample immediately following the completion of the inquiry. Cram explained that stewards do not normally release what the banned substance was in such cases unless the person charged agrees to its release. Maloney, who has more than 800 career winners, had been enjoying his best season and is currently 14th on the Melbourne jockeys premiership with 16 wins in 2017-18. The jockey will miss out on partnering boom colt Nature Strip when he returns to racing at Caulfield this Saturday before he goes to Adelaide for a Group race. Maloney, who had ridden Nature Strip in four of his five races to date, has been replaced on the horse by Craig Williams. |
