One-third of large Australian companies paid no tax, ATO data show

About one-third of large companies have failed to pay tax, even though they made a gross profit, but the Tax Office says most have good reasons, according to the latest corporate tax transparency report released today.

Of the 2,109 entities monitored by the ATO in data covering 2016-17, 66 per cent paid tax although the remainder did not as they claimed tax losses and concessions that can go back several years.

"While the majority of entities in the corporate transparency population made profits and paid tax in relation to the 2016-17 year, some do not pay tax," the transparency report said.

The above is an article on the ABC website and with the article is a list published for a range of companies with taxable income and tax . Glencores income and tax is mind boggling . $1.6B in taxable income and paid $1000 tax .

Now that's a great argument for a mining tax .

Yet another keynote Coalition initiative: leave the tax loophole alone, keep the miners and their mates on-side.

It's not a political thing at all, there is no difference in their proposed tax laws.

It is the cost of having big corporations do business in Australia - and if we had a more realistic corporate tax rate, we would get more big corporations and the jobs and prosperity that go with it ... ask the Americans who laughed at Trump.

Nobody ever seems to talk about the indirect taxes that these corporations generate by the way ... how much GST is generated through that kind of turnover, how much stamp duty on acquisitions, how much payroll tax, how much PAYG tax is withheld from staff, and then all of the ancillary businesses that they attract ... yeah, let close 'em down, they pay no tax!!!

The old discredited trickle down economic theory rears its very ugly head again. The budget bottom line has improved since token efforts were put into transfer pricing and offshoring profits - long after the cons in Britain acted to extract a little tax where none was paid previously by multinationals using a variety of such devious schemes.

Speaking of tax and mismanagement: one of the great tragedies of our time has been the lack of bipartisanship on management of the national estate. That allowed big mining to attack the MRRT and "forced" Gillard and Swan to give miners huge tax concessions. As we know just as the MRRT was started to return a dividend to taxpayers Abbott killed it off so the miners made billions on the back of very high commodity prices while the owners of the resources - us - got the usual return. Howard and Costello's changes to PRRT tax concessions have been modelled as costing Australians ~$90B compared to other similar gas-producing nations but because of the earlier experience Labor now hasn't got the guts to take Big Oil on and fix that anomaly. That is not just a blight on the nation it's a reflection of the very low standards to which governments since Keating's have slipped.

Clap... well said 3bm ... but we pay peanuts, so we get a mix of self-interested, greedy, egotistical, unemployable, unqualified monkeys with short-term goals of simply doing what they need to do to be re-employed in 3 years time. Too much money available for people like that in the private sector today ... idiots can earn more than the PM in any bank!

Don't worry though, the Labor Neg Gearing and CGT policy will cost us a lot more!Unhappy

Time you did more reading on those particular blights on our taxation system Doc. Then again it's way past time you stopped reading everything which feeds your biases and further adds to your already sadly unbalanced views. It's one thing for people to have a philosophy, entirely another to turn to lies and ignorance for confirmation of the rectitude of their obviously uninformed opinions

What's wrong with you? Can't take a compliment either!

What is it you are fumbling with? ... do you even know, or are you just trying to be obtuse for the sake of it?

Don't worry ... what a dick.

There was nothing at all obtuse about 3BMs post.
Which is why you were reduced to name calling.

I have to agree with the failure of both sides on this issue , but I always suspected or it looked that way  that Gillard got in on a deal to water down the MRRT or Mining Tax for the Prime Ministership and the axing of an unpopular Rudd .
As soon as she got in the MRRT was neutered by her Government and the Mining industry stopped the media campaign against Labour at the same time .

Sorry Gay - I will refrain from "calling them like I see them" out of respect for all of my fellow villagers, but mostly for you!Hug

Just out of curiosity, could you give me an example of something that might be belittling of say, someone who I privately thought was a dick for argument's sake ... I don't wish to upset anyone, I'm kind of at a loss at this moment, but I have had a long day - thanks!Big smile
