Hi Kimberley, thankyou for that information it is interesting.  i can't help but think pepperano is crying out for sir tristram and no surprise to see sir tristram prominent in surprise baby.  i know the foreman of her trainer said she was a cripple and no wonder racing such a big horse early and 8 times as a 2 year old.  she was very unlucky in the 2 million dollar magic millions to run second.  Crested Wave sire Surfers Paradise also I think who won the Cox Plate?  i noticed Surprise baby also brings Machiavellian in through the sire.  i am liking admire mars more and more.  especially three lines of Halo in the first five generations to a mare with two strains of danehill.  more than ready being a grandson of halo.

A few observations on the mare.

The family includes horses like Random Chance, Think Big, Beachside, Cannsea and others. It is not hard to note that there is a strong NZ influence here. This is not surprising as the female line traces back to include a mare by Nordenfeldt, a winner of both the AJC and VRC derbies and a quality stallion to boot. He was a son of Musket and in turn produced a son called Stepniak who appears in the tail female line of a pretty useful mare in Winx. Both Winx and Pepperano both have Sovereign Edition in their female line as well.

The mare raced in Qld, and we often forget Qld based sires in discussions. Although not going to produce a runner who is going to get 2000m, there could be some attraction to a mating with Better Than Ready especially in terms of putting a yearling through Magic Millions. One left field mating in Qld would be Jonker but might not get past 1200m I would suspect.

I like the idea of more of an outcross but if we go to the other extreme, Captivant and Cosmic Force share a lot of similar aspects to his pedigree. Maybe one day if the mare has no success it could be a high-risk strategy.

I like Admire Mars as a prospect, but I do not think the mating will produce the 2000m type. I would suspect more of a 1200-1400m type. Although expensive, Maurice appeals more from a Japanese perspective. On a similar vein, Saxon Warrior has some attraction although the chance of an early 2yo is unlikely. While at Coolmore, St Mark's Basilica could be worth a look. He looks potentially a bit heavy so it depends on what sort of risk is acceptable. I think it is a well balanced looking mating though.

Darley of course offers some remarkable bloodlines and Pinatubo and Too Darn Hot both could be worth a look with the mare.

One that may appeal is Xtravagant. He looks very much as if he can produce versatile types and he certainly has a strong NZ connection, similar to Dundeel.

Hi Progold.  Thankyou for this response.

I like the cut of your jib.

Better than Ready is an excellent option and is definitely on the table.

I think Sepoy is also a reasonable match for her as I have a suspicion a daughter of Danehill may be to her liking.  Provided there is no other inbreeding close up.  I don't know if he is still at stud.

I think a horse like Osipenko would even be a nice match for her provided he continued to kick goals though I haven't had a really good look at him yet on type.

Pepperano could run 1400 metres out reasonably well and perhaps further if she had been more sound, and I would be hopeful that Admire Mars x Pepperano could get to the mile.  The cross should fine her up and he ran strongly at Group 1 level over 2000 metres and was a mile specialist.  Even if it is only at three years it could be useful.  An early running 2 year old that can win up to the mile is very useful.

I like Maurice but they are big strong horses.

Any number of Progold's suggestions are well worth consideration, but fwiw wouldn't go near the unwanted Sepoy which apart from Alizee is a failed sire.  The fact his stud fee has fallen from $66k to a case of Four X says it all.  And as for the Danehill 3 x 4 x 5...

Interesting that you hit on Osipenko.  He's a huge chance on a pedigree match basis so it'll be interesting to see how his career progresses and whether he's retired after his Autumn campaign.

And as you're certainly aware at some point of time you really need to settle on what you want from a distance perspective, as apart from the physical issue you're currently considering sprinter, miler and middle distance sires.

Cheers.

Hi Second Chance, I want from a distance perspective a horse that can win the Golden Slipper at 2 and Cox Plate at 3.  Like Anamoe very nearly did.  For me this is part of the attraction of Admire Mars for my mare.  Pepperano has ample speed and he adds some stamina.  Both very early runners at good levels.  A horse that can run early, win from 1200 to 1600 metres and offers some chance of running 2000 metres.  Very few stallions offer this opportunity, even ones that were competitive themselves like Pierro or All Too Hard.  Castelvecchio may be one, but his progeny are too heavy for my mare and on the basis that he is, you couldn't discount Dundeel.  Complimenting my mare with this cross, is the fact she is already a big bulky sprinter with good speed and a miler should refine her nicely.

nice timing Progold.

Better than Ready filly TRIFLING from Commands mare Wabeel just won a 2 year old race at the sunshine coast.  Wabeel being the dam also of Yamazaki.

A horse like Anamoe doesn't come along every day as we know. Interestingly we see that he also has Sovereign Edition in his female line. He comes from one of the great colonial families tracing to Flora McIvor and a line that also had much of its history in NZ.

I was however reflecting on your comments about size, and this probably deserves a little more discussion. It has been a long-held belief in the thoroughbred industry that a good big horse will always beat a good small horse. It is a very basic discussion but there is a lot of truth in that. In my opinion the answer to this is balance and this is what I believe that the mare has been missing to date. A big unbalanced horse is probably not much different to a small unbalanced horse. The mare herself in my view lacks stamina lines in her pedigree. The Admire Mars mating hopes to introduce stamina, and it is possible that it will. My concern is that it is not obvious where this is coming from. Potentially Daiwa Major might be a source of stamina, but he was champion 2yo sire in Japan so we are reduced to a level of uncertainty that I try to avoid when discussing matings. Reducing risk is always a good thing in my view.
If we return to the case of Anamoe, we clearly see that stamina influences come in through his dam who carries Whiskey Road and Nijinsky. Looking for stamina in stallions becomes a far more difficult proposition. But if we get the balance right, then size can be an advantage.

Hi Progold,

The mare through her female family has some stamina.

Her second dam by Crested Wave (sire of Surfers Paradise) won from 1600 to 2000 metres at listed level.

Her third dam Jean Gordon won from 1600 to 2000 metres.

Further back her bloodline traces to a high class NZ family.  Dee Dee, Pepperano's 5th dam is from a very good family.  The last very good horse from the family was Librici, a grandson of Urupukapuka who won the 1984 Queensland Derby.

Court Command's dam, Court House Lane came second in a class 6 over 2100 metres.

Admire Mars dam, Via Medici was a Group 3 winner who won from 1600 to 1800 metres.

His sire Daiwa Major (father Sunday Silence) was a Group 1 winner over 2000 metres and placed in a Group 1 race over 2500 metres.

I do not think the cross is completely devoid of stamina and I believe if I can lighten Pepperano up and make her more sound, she may have naturally got further, she had a very nice stride.

I would be disappointed if the progeny didn't get a mile and still be able to sprint.  I think it is low risk.  I would be hopeful of 2000 metres but some things must stay with the gods when so many things need to be lined up.

Hello,
maybe it's a bit far fetched, when I went back the damline of "Admire Mars", I spot the name of "Rossellina", the FS of Ribot!
Admire Mars by Daiwa Major, his 4 dam La Menina is bred 3x3 Mahmoud/Mumtaz Begum FB/FS, sounds familiar does it.

If you check  the ped opf "Caro", there is small German breeding connection: Caro - Ranavalo-Orsenigo- by Oleander (Prunus - Orchidee by Galtee More)

regards, Ticino

We have to be careful with suggesting what characteristics we think that a stallion may transmit to their progeny. In the case of Court Command, he got three Listed winners, two at 1200m and one at 1400m. Hardly a suggestion of stamina. Ferocity and Lion Hunter were basically speed sires. It is hard to imagine that there really is any stamina likely being transferred. Crested Wave was allocated as an Intermediate/Classic influence so again we come back to a lack of obvious stamina influences in the pedigree. It is all about balance, and I think this is what is needed in the mare's progeny. It is possible that Admire Mars may be a source of stamina, but he has also been a leading 2yo sire so I would be happy to wait and see. Sunday Silence who we like to see as something of a stamina influence because of the quality of the Japanese thoroughbred, he clearly was a true classic influence with his progeny to the fore especially in the 3yo classics. While Ticino points out the German connection of his family, a line of the family ended up in Qld where it failed quite badly at distances under 1400m through matings with Qld speed sires. Her matings to date have not seen the introduction of stamina, and I believe that in particular stamina sires like Galileo, Sadler's Wells and Zabeel that we know are wonderful stamina influences, will probably introduce exactly those physical characteristics that you are looking for if they are close up in the stallion's pedigree.

Thanks Progold.  Lot of truth in what you said.  Saying that Pepperano herself won out to 1400 metres at Flemington in reasonable time and company.  Admire Mars does not need to add much stamina for the progeny to reach the mile.  2000 metres might be a bridge too far.  Tend to agree about your comments of Zabeel or Galileo or Sadlers Wells.  One you may have left off there is Monsun.  Quite like Vadamos for her.  Do you have any thoughts on that cross.  If you are on facebook I can invite you to the page where you can see her and her Ole Kirk foal if that assists at all.  I like the idea of Dundeel for her, especially because he is a beautiful horse and on the smaller side and the Zabeel infleunce.  Whereas Vadamos looks a fair lump of a horse.

Not seeing anything in the Vadamos mating that would warrant sending the mare to NZ. However, if NZ was an option, one I would look at is Ocean Park. I like the idea of bringing in other lines of Northern Dancer to complement the Danzig in particular in the mare. The sex balance duplication of Damascus is likely a plus and he was a remarkable racehorse and stallion from arguably the golden era of US racing. Importantly the stallion is probably exactly the type you are looking for, with the ability to get those versatile runners. He is by Thorn Park who many Qlders will know well hailing from the Denise's Joy family, out of a mare by Zabeel and himself from the female line of Hunza. It is interestingly the family of Fixed Flush who not only won stakes races in Qld, but also was a very good albeit underrated local stallion. The family also features O'Reilly who was a son of Last Tycoon who was a stallion that was mentioned in some discussions on the mare.

Progold.  Very clever Progold I do like Ocean Park as a horse and Thorn Park I am a fan of through the exploits of Exceedance who was a very good horse and nice type.  Heaps of Sir Ivor there also who is my favourite horse and bloodline.  I think it would suit her.  Funny another filly I own and have bred Highland Reel x Magic Kitty who is in pre-training and is getting some wraps he may suit even better.  Maybe send them both over one day in two for one deal though i am keen to put some speed through the Highland Filly through a horse like Rebel Dane being similar to the Fireburn cross.  Sex balance Marscay also who More Than Ready, Danehill and or Zabeel would like I would think.

I don't think Daumier was mentioned so, as he's just been announced as standing next season, he could be worth a thought.
He has his own thread in the Stallions Forum & djebel has kindly posted his pedigree chart
Thumbs Up

Hi, just wanted to give you an update if you are still around.  The Ole Kirk x Pepperano is a gun.  Soon to race and called Youre not the King.  She also has a Graff foal we are very happy with.  Could not get back into Ole Kirk as he was booked out instantly so we are looking at St Mark's Basilica.  I really like Mo'unga for her also so we are considering him.
