My mum was naturally left handed but the nuns beat it out of her.

Wrote very well with both hands as an adult

Interesting to note that if you "do that" with your weaker hand, it feels like a strangers hand Wink

Ringo is a famous leftie who plays a right handed kit. Impossible to emulate his drum rolls and I've gone mad trying to.

As a primary schooler the teachers made my life a misery trying to get me to write right-handed. Ended after I climbed out of a classroom window and went home, explained to my day who worked shift and who'd suspected things weren't going great for me at school, and he quickly sorted the teachers good and proper.

So no more attempts were made to change my writing hand, however the rsole Mr Charlesworth evened up the score by regularly pinching/pulling my hair up from the base of the neck for a frequently non-existent indiscretion.

So...a good many of you are left-handed.

Seems like more than ten percent.

Catholic school? I never saw anything like that in all my years in public schools. It's weird, like something out of Dickens.Big smile

Interestingly a State school, ie Murrumbeena Primary School.

Which did however have its benefits: like the first ever swimming pool in a public primary.

I remember once hearing an ex racing driver turned commentator saying racing drivers often prefer going around corners one way or the other. Presume this applies to two wheels as well.  Often wondered whether this was the same for the best of the best.  If any of you happen to live next to alan jones, mick doohan, cadel evans, or casey stoner (he could win on a broken shopping trolley) or some other world champ could you knock on their front door and report back.

I went to Catholic School.  As did my husband and his sister.  She was left handed, he could work with either hand.  The priest made her bless herself with the right hand but nothing was done to make her write with her right hand.  One daughter takes after her father and can work both ways.  I think the rest are like me.  Right hand only no matter what the task.  Looking at my youngest grandson he could be both or dominant left.  Not sure yet he's only 3.

And yes my husband was bought up in the faith but didn't believe anyway.

Common Practical Problems:

  • Smudging: Since most left-to-right scripts (like English) are designed for right-handed writers, left-handed people tend to drag their hand over what they’ve just written, leading to ink or pencil smudges

.
  • .

  • Obstructed View: The writing hand often covers the words just written, making it harder to see and monitor letter formation and spacing

  • .

  • Uncomfortable Wrist Position ("Hooked" Grip): Many left-handers develop a curled or "hooked" wrist posture to avoid smudging and see their writing. This can lead to discomfort, fatigue, and even pain with prolonged writing

  • .

  • Slower Writing Speed: The mechanics of pushing a pen across the page, rather than pulling it as right-handers do, can slow down writing and make it less fluid

  • .

  • Letter and Word Spacing Issues: Left-handed writers may have difficulty spacing words consistently, as their hand covers the previous word and they cannot use their finger as a spacing guide like right-handers

  • .

  • Grip and Paper Position: Without guidance, left-handers may hold the pen too close to the tip or position the paper incorrectly, making writing awkward and reducing legibility

  • .

  • Classroom and Desk Arrangements: Sitting to the right of a right-handed person can cause elbows to bump, and desks or chairs with attached writing surfaces are often designed for right-handed use

There have been a lot of jokes perpetrated on 'lefties'.

Also...Many people believe that the devil is left-handed. The Latin word for left, sinister, also means unlucky, evil, and suspicious. The French word for left, gauche, also means clumsy. A left-handed compliment is an insult.
