Go to the 7 min mark to see the epic 10 point ride they gave Conner in the semi final, it's labelled in the footer of the video, it truly was amazing.

WSL is on today at Tahiti, Teahupoo or "chopes"as it's affectionately called, and Australia's Molly Picklum is just off the chain good in these heavy waves, she is surfing like a guy, she's in the final 5 and the grand final they go to Fiji - cloud-break, which is a left hander as well, you'd be mad to bet against her winning that final and becoming world champ.

South Africa's Jordy Smith might be having the year of his life on tour, he has always ben one with talent but found wanting when it mattered, this year all the stars aligned and he is surfing without care and its showing, he will also be hard to beat in the finals at cloudbreak. We will see and know more after Tahiti, but those two surfers would be my early pics for the finals.

Australias Molly Picklum and Catty Simmers are about to surf the women's final in Tahiti. Both of these girls rip so this should be good, oh and the waves are perfect for comp surfing around the 6 to 8 foot with odd ten footer rolling through, the wind is a little sus though but still there are barrels.

If you think the girls don't surf big waves good, then think again, Pickles killing it in the final yesterday.

Carl, I’ve never been into surfing either as a participant or a viewer.
But that last clip was fantastic.

Yes Oneone, I’ve always got a kick out of watching the big wave stuff too.
The reasons I loved this one were the quality of the camera work, the skills and how she was just a down to earth, Aussie, elite sportswoman. There are a few pro’s in top level sport who could learn lessons from her. |

That break in particular is the heaviest, most dangerous in the world, it breaks over a very sharp, shallow coral reef, 20+foot waves break over water that is essentially 3 feet deep before you hit razor coral. it's not the biggest break in the world but it is by far the heaviest, a lot of blokes won't go it even some on the WSL tour are frightened of it. That makes what these young ladies did even more wild.
This the same break two days before the girls surfed in the finals..this shows the might of "Chopes " Matahi Drollet a life long born n bred local is the king of Chopes, you'll see him riding the green board in this video. Carl. |

If you want to see how far women's surfing has come go to 9:58 in that film and watch Izzy Gomez, that is a fkn beast of a wave, she is braver than 9 out ten men I give you the tip.

yes Nazare in Portugal, Mavericks in California and Jaws in Hawaii are the 3 main big waves that are accessible from land, there are other big wave breaks like Sunset, Waimea bay and Pipeline, those others are somewhat timid compared to Nazare, Mavericks and Jaws.
There are other big waves that break on outside reefs are only accessible by boats etc. There's one of the coast of California and one off South Africa that are downright bonkers. Interestingly Australia has one of the scariest big waves that is out in the middle of the ocean, it's called "the Right". off the coast of WA, it's a 30 minute jetski ride out into the ocean to find that bombie.
This is one the biggest days ever out at the "Right" there have been other sessions but on this day it was particularly huge. This one shows you how they get out there and how they tow in surfers to get on these huge slabs. Carl.

So we are a the pointy end of the world surfing tour and these are the 5 men left in the finals.
In the yellow jersey we have Jago Dora who is looking to win his first world title, now he is a goofy footer so these waves he rides on his forehand, the only other goofy footer in the finals is his fellow Brazilian Italo Ferreira. Italo has to win constantly from his draw to even get to surf against Dora. The rest are all natural footers means they ride backhand at this wave. Jack Robinson is the only Aussie, Griffin being an American and Jordy is South African, all natural footers. This is really hard to pick, the waves will be nice and big next Monday onwards apparently, so if they wait and surf the men in those bigger waves next week, then Robinson is your guy, his big wave surfing kills these others, his warm up free surfing this week at Cloudbreak in 6 foot waves has been on point. If it stays smallish and they run the mens comp in 4 to 6 feet then the Brazilians will have it between themselves as they often get to show off their air game as a point of difference. I'm going to go Jack Robinson to win with an EW saver on Jordy Smith to pull a rabbit out of his hat, he is the deffo dark-horse surfing all year like he doesn't care and it's been working for him. Now the women's.. The only way Molly Picklum gets beat is if Caitlin Simmers gets back on her horse and turns the tables on her from Tahiti, otherwise Pickles is home imo. Caroline Marks has an advantage as she's the only goofy footer here so she surfs forehand, but her big wave surfing is not as good as Pickles and Simmers. Betty Lou is from Pipeline Hawaii so she does have that kind of background, she might be the, big wave, dark-horse, particularly as it's a left just like Pipe, but Pickles for me, she is the superior surfer at the moment, she surfs like a bloke at times, Simmers to be the one challenging. Idiot competition organisers waited till today to run the finals saying there was going to be big waves, they run and it's crap and onshore, what a waist of time.
