Big A proving a big hit

It's perhaps little surprise that champion racehorse Anamoe is showing the same zest for his new life in the covering shed as he did on the racetrack.

A year of form his career-defining win in the Cox Plate, the 'Big A' is proving a big hit in his highly anticipated debut season at stud.

Kelvinside Stud Manager Barley Ward-Thomas said the nine-time Group 1 winner has made a seamless transition from the racetrack to the breeding barn and is extremely fertile from his early covers.

"He's adapted to his new role very well," Ward-Thomas said.

"He was a professional on the racetrack and he's certainly a professional in his new life in the breeding barn.

"He's got abundant libido and the lovely thing for ahorse like this is he's extremely fertile.

"He's very easy for the team to work with and there is a queue to look after him, everybody loves him."

Anamoe's maiden book has been capped at 140 mares, including many from Darley's own quality broodmare band.

Admissible, the dam of 2YO Stakes winner Heuristic, four-time G1 winner Guelph, who has produced two Stakes winners including Encryption, Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi and Monstsegur, the dam of two 2YO Stakes winners, are among the mares Darley has lined up for the son of Street Boss.

Outside mares booked to Anamoe in 2023 include G1 winner Lighthouse, multiple Stakes winner Kissonallforcheeks and Pinocchio, the dam of Everest champion Classique Legend.

Ward-Thomas explained the process by which the young stallion's understanding of his new job was accelerated prior to the breeding season commencing on September 1.

"At the bedrock of everything we do, we try to use nature," he said.

"In terms of how they learn their new role, it does come completely naturally to them, but they also have never been exposed to anything like it in their lives before.

"Prior to the breeding season, we spend approximately a week-and-a-half to two weeks introducing mares to him and letting him make mistakes and learn the process.

"We just use some of the older nanny mares for that purpose for him to get some practice.

"Whilst he enjoys it, he's very professional in the way he goes about his work."

Anamoe is standing for $121,000 in 2023.

It takes a wise man a lifetime to grow a tree and a fool five minutes to kill one.

That is brilliant that they capped him at 140. Wish others would learn this.
