Cheers you two.

So just to be precise, a total return of $633,333, a pre-tax/incidentals profit of $16,000 per share or $533,333 in total.

The point I was trying to get at was that Bob came up with that in the blink of an eyelid, and that type of immediate acuity is something he uses to advantage when investing on the neddies.  Hesitate and you're (often) lost.

Not suggesting I'm as quick as Bob - however I too got my answers within seconds. Rusty wont believe me of course LOL

Percentages can be confusing - as it depends what your reference point is. For example - margins in business. We currently work on roughly 50 % gross margin how I look at it. If we buy grass for $10/m2 into warehouse & sell for $20/m2 - then i say we have a 50% gross margin. My partner says we have 100% margin. The reality is we have a 50% margin vs Selling price & a 100% margin vs Cost price. These are Gross margins - direct into warehouse product margins only.

If you then include all other costs including leasing, wages, office costs, cars etc you are left with Net Margins.

It can be confusing for us non-accounting types

Just as a matter of interest, the bloke who made that $500,000 pre-tax profit is one of four mates who meet for lunch most every month: sixty years after first meeting at High School or Uni.

He's made three fortunes in his life: the first selling IT software into the Victorian education system, his second as dealer in industrial and commercial real estate, and his last as co-founder and chairman of a major Australian food franchise.  Thumbs Up

Another successfully practiced as a barrister specializing in criminal law for 27 years before co-hosting Melbourne's highest rating breakfast radio show for another 20 years.  Clap

The third was Australian CEO of accounting house behemoth Price Waterhouse and inaugural CEO of Price Waterhouse Coopers, past trustee of the MCG Trust, and later non-executive director of a series of Australian and international companies.  Star

And guess I'm just there to make up the numbers.  Embarrassed  Tongue

Happy to take your word for that JJ, albeit 24 hours later.  And as for trickery...Ermm

Mind you, you said the pre-tax profit was $16,000.  Incorrect, it was actually $16,000 per share.

He owned 3.3M shares

 Well...yes.

I cannot see how Rusty gets his answer, though...

ok - i was reading that as 100k of shares at 3 c each ($3k) vs $100k worth of shares at 3 cents each

So total shares 3.33 million @ 3c = $100 k (as Rusty says)

So 3.33 @ 19c = $633 k

Profit $533 k

Rule 101 - pay attention to the question

As I get older my mathematic ability is declining, years ago I could add up the bookies percentage in a 16 horse field in 10 seconds but today , although I know the percentages off by heart, my adding up is considerably slower.
