Just saw that a new leave entitlement is coming in next Feb. The Fairs Work Commission has approved up to 10 days (2 weeks) paid leave for Family & Domestic Violence Abuse. Now I'm not suggesting leave may well be warranted for such acts - however is it really up to business to be paying for it ? Lets look at the current leave entitlements ;
* 4 weeks holiday - 20 days * 2 weeks Sick Pay - 10 days * Compassionate Leave - 2 days for every case that fits the criteria (fairly broad as well) * Parental leave - various across different Awards * Community Service Leave - Disasters & Jury Duty - no limit * Long Serve Leave - nearly a 5 days per year pro rata for 10 years service & there are probably others i have missed - like the Covid isolation stuff recently Again - I'm not suggesting any of this is frivolous. However the cost of doing business in this country is getting a bit rich. Throw in the ever increasing Super entitlements - now up to 10.5%. Years ago wage on-costs rule of thumb for private industry was around 30%. Got to be over 40% now. No wonder people like coming out here to work - & why so many companies go off-shore to do their stuff. |

In short - no TJ
![]() You obviously don't employ anyone. However don't you see all this crap about bringing local manufacturing back on-shore is just codswallop. Wages & entitlements - combined with a poxy sized market = will never happen. And the burden just keeps increasing - as this latest entitlement shows.

And its easy to offer all this stuff when you don't have to pay for it. The ALP have a history of giving stuff to people that others have to pay for. Hawky did it with Super. When he announced it you'd have thought the Govt - not business - was paying for it. But no !

Company profits are booming. Small business profits are booming despite the alleged "cost of labour".
Yet wages continue to stagnate. Someone, ie oneone, has simply no idea regarding apparent this anomaly. Which of course comes as absolutely no surprise whatsoever. What a sorry state. The profit
crisis is the inflation-driving pressure we don't talk about Interest rates, the Russian war in
Ukraine and a supply chain crunch are all blamed for surging inflation that is
eroding the value of worker's pay packets. But there's another element: soaring
company profits. Key points:
"The strength in profits has
come despite firms facing very elevated cost pressures," NAB senior
economist Brody Viney said. Australia Institute executive
director Richard Dennis added: "What the data says is that profits are
rising across Australia. Collectively, firms have never had it so good." The latest look at businesses around
the nation shows corporate profit leapt 28 per cent last year. Wages grew too, but by less than 2
per cent. |

Can imagine that little fella to his employees, making them feel guilty for taking annual leave or for public holidays, refusing to hire a woman in case she has a child one day.
Actually know I think I've got it wrong, the little fella would be to mean to even have employees receiving leave entitlements, he'd just have them all on casual rates, minimum wages no doubt, give them a 6 pack of Tun Lager for Christmas (if it's been a good year) and let them know how lucky they are to receive that.

Another TBV member who is either an employee or a life long public servant. Nothing wrong with either of those of course - just gives commentary a bit of perspective. Not unlike Publicans arguing cashless gaming cards will actually increase addiction - not reduce it đ

What other life issues would you like to make your employer responsible for Afross ? Time off on full pay for sex changes / or attending a religious gathering for a month or two. I mean what on earth does domestic violence have to do with an employee ? Let the Govt cough up if they want to call the tune.

I donât necessarily disagree with you about employers bearing the brunt of the cost. In the real world, itâs another disincentive to employ women.

I actually agree that domestic violence leave should be government funded, as like Rusty said above, it makes it more likely that employers, particularly smaller employers, will favour a male candidate over a female given potential of dv or maternity leave.
The increased casualisation of the workforce is a worry for mine, roughly 1 in 4 employees in Australia are casual employees, many long term but with no security, many low paid, so it is a fallacy that their casual loading allows them to "pay themselves for public holidays, sick days or holidays". I understand casual employment is necessary in some instances, for example if you need extra staff to fill busier seasonal times, for example retail coming into Christmas but long term employees on casual rates should be able to transition to perminant full time employment easier. I personally know some people in this position and it can be stressful for them, even something like a public holiday, or if they work outside, a rainy day, sees a reduced pay that week and given they're already low income earners that puts strain on the finances, quite often these are people who simply don't have the skills to budget to allow for things like this so, just as super allows them to save for retirement without knowing, transitioning them onto perminant, with an adjusted pay rate to allow for leave entitlements, allows them to cover for no work days without thinking about it.

For once Rusty and I agree. Between Maternity leave, and if implemented, DV leave, not much incentive to employ women.
