Here is a radiograph of an almost two year old horse. It is that time of year when people get excited about getting their two year olds to a trainer to get started under saddle. Here is a perfect example of why not to be in such a hurry. This horse will be two in May and when we sent these radiographs of his knees/carpus to a specialist at a university. We were told this horse should not be started in a training program for another 10-12 months because his growth plates in his knees were not closed enough. Starting a horse that is not physically mature enough can have long term effects like osteoarthritis and chronic lameness issues. If you have any doubt, you can always have radiographs done to see if the growth plates are closed enough for the work required by a training program. |

It takes a wise man a lifetime to grow a tree and a fool five minutes to kill one.

I wonder how many babies are out there racing like this, not to mention the breeze up sales, they make me cringe.

I don't think I want to know the answer to that.

At about $700 a throw owners can have their youngsters thoroughly scanned and analysed at various stages of their development.
Cheap money compared with training fees of anywhere between $36-60k per year.

What better indication of bone maturity and development than X-rays , trainers of today have it in spades compared to yesteryear , old timers used their eye , how they were coping with work , the feed bin , constant lying down , and the overall general demeaner , many times in my youth I heard horsemen say " gee his knees look open " you could see the gaps , not outrageous but the signs were there , youngsters slightly " tied in " at the knee or "back at the knee " were always candidates for trouble ahead if not careful ,shin soreness was a healthy indication for both shin aAnd knee to be given a spell , of course with an abundant $$$ for 2 y/o the syndicated ownership will sway a lot to carry on regardless of immaturity imo . it's human nature .

Yes, the "eye" has arguably disappeared to some extent these days Carioca.
