Last year’s Cox Plate winner State of Rest will stand his opening season at stud in Ireland for a service fee of €25,000 (A$36,000).

Rathbarry Stud, based in County Cork, in partnership with his Australasian ownership group, led by Newgate, retired State of Rest in August after failing Racing Victoria’s veterinary protocols enabling him to defend his Cox Plate title.

There will be at least 17 stallions standing for a greater fee in Ireland than State of Rest at his mark of €25,000, placing him on equal footing to fellow Irish-based stallions Churchill, Ghaiyyath and Sottsass.

State of Rest will spend the first half of the year standing at Rathbarry Stud, where he will be second to Acclamation (€27,500) of four stallions on their roster, before arriving at Newgate Farm in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley.

Australasian racing and breeding entities such as China Horse Club, Laurel Oak Bloodstock, Corumbene Stud, Blandford Stud, Dorrington Farm, Silverdale Farm and Glenlogan Park all have a stake in State Of Rest, ensuring the son of Starspangledbanner is sure to be supported in the Southern Hemisphere.

Newgate’s current stallion roster is headlined by Extreme Choice ($275,000 including GST), Capitalist ($99,000) and Deep Field ($88,000) with State of Rest anticipated to start the 2023 breeding season below that trio.

State of Rest raced 13 times for five wins and four placings, winning four Group/Grade 1 races including the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (2004m) at Royal Ascot in June.

Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing
