However the real unsung hero's had to be the 2 Equatorial Guinea team assistants - seen in the clip at the 1.50 mark clapping their hands off.
To think they dragged themselves away from their homeland to guide Eric through the trial & tribulations of superstardom. Total commitment

A mate actually said to me - although I'm not how true it is - you know your going bad when you pay top dollar for great seats at an Olympic Games swimming session - & you look down at see Eric lining up for a heat swim in the 1500 m

Actually I'd be interested in Voyagers comments re this. His strength seemed to be the first 20 meters or so. That's when his arm speed & sideways movement into the ropes seemed to be at its most efficient.
Even after 17 years I'm yet to see anyone duplicate his stroke.

After a bit more research i can confirm Eric is now the National Swimming Coach for Equatorial Guinea.
The current status of Paula Barilla - the other team member at the time - is less known. |

Paula Barilla Bolopa, 18, another of Equatorial Guinea's four-strong team, said yesterday: "It is a very basic pool. Sometimes I cannot use it because hotel guests are in it."
Both Barilla Bolopa and Moussambani are in Sydney thanks to an Olympic program which allows competitors from smaller nations to compete without reaching the set qualifying times.

Here you go - hot off the Press.
Eric has officially complained to the Victorian Commonwealth Games Committee about the decision to cancel the games. Goes onto to say he has been in full training for the past 2 weeks. As a side comment he stated due to his age he would have been unlikely to set any new personal records. But that wasn't the point. His old Manager & Assistant manager are also said to be filthy - having already organised 2 weeks away from their Monte Carlo home base to facilitate Eric. He is yet to get an official reply

Also about 10 m from the finish I noticed a significant alteration to her stride.
Could have been a dodgy hammy , a twisted ankle - of just pure exhaustion - not sure Needless to say , we need more information before jumping to conclusions.

One final comment
Its athletes like this kid that are the big losers with Dan's Commonwealth Games decision. I mean its unlikely she will be able to step up immediately to World Cup / Olympic level. She - & other athletes like her - need more experience to get their confidence up. And their leg speed ! Very ordinary Dan

Just watching that race footage again - & it really does seem biased against the young Somalian kid.
They seem to be concentrating on the girls leading all the time. Wide angled lens required. Seriously, the back end of her race could have been the strongest for her & we would never know it.
