I know what you mean. I try and keep in touch with the sport but yes, so many names I don’t know or they’re walkers.

I was lucky enough a few months back to secure $71 about a promising horse, Captains Knock. Now $7. Needs to draw well to lead to win I think but fingers crossed

Wonderful racing in the heats last night.

Thankfully Captains Knock pulled out a fairly easy win. $71 into $4s now 👏👏

It was indeed, mate. A couple of strides past the post he was clearly in front. It’s why I very rarely bet during the 2nd & 3rd round heats of the inters.
He’s secured his spot in the final barring an absolute disaster on Saturday

Think your bloke only has to finish his heat & get the 1 point to make him a mathematical certainty to make the final 12 horse field.

Yes 1x1. Looks certain and that’s why the final round is always hard to bet in. The Captain is drawn wide in the toughest heat of the night.
Just poke around and conserve little fella👏👏👏

You've been a bit stiff in the Final Letters. Don Hugo draws perfectly in the 3....My Moonlite Dream leads from the 4 & immediately hands up to him. You draw the second line behind. Your only chance is someone like The Minstrel hammering from the death.......the problem being that rarely occurs the the Interdom Final as they are all competing for a high position.

In saying that I think Don Hugo is vulnerable.....just need someone to sacrifice in the run

Good luck...you will get a great run for your money.

Horror draw, 1x1

However they will go hard. Hope the pole tries to hold MMD out for a while. The 2 outside the captain  don’t have a lot of speed. Dangerous & Max’s Delight so there may be a gap to force off

CHAMPION driver Luke McCarthy is growing in confidence he has the ideal horse and the right barrier draw to fill the one missing piece in his stellar career.

McCarthy, 42, who boasts almost 3000 wins and 79 at Group 1 level, trains and drives the exciting Don Hugo, a $2.60 favourite from an ideal barrier three in next Saturday night's $500,000 Group 1 Inter Dominion pacing final (2300m) at Menangle.

In a career spanning 26 years, McCarthy has won three Miracle Miles and two Hunter Cups, but is winless in 11 attempts at Inter Dominion finals. He's finished third on four occasions, the latest aboard For A Reason in 2015.

"I don't really think about that stuff until after the big races, but the Inter Dominion is certainly a race everyone wants to win," McCarthy said.

"Things have come together really well for this horse. I had him a bit underdone on opening night when he got beaten, but the run really brought him on and he was terrific winning at Bathurst (second heat) and better again last night (Menangle).

"He's a stallion who comes through his races well and is really in the zone.

"He took the next step winning the TAB Eureka last campaign and has improved that bit more again since his little break after it, which is all you can ask for.

"The draw is a big help. I've said from night one Minstrel is the horse to beat in the series and Captains Knock is next best. I'm glad I've drawn the front row and they're both off the back (Captain Knock barrier nine and Minstrel in 11)."

Under the conditions of the final, eight horses will start off the front row and four on the back.

"I've got every chance to be the first of the big guns to find the lead now and that's a big help in any race," McCarthy said.

In contrast to McCarthy's long Inter Dominion history, Goulburn horseman Brad Hewitt will train and drive his first finalist with Captains Knock.

To cap a memorable series, Hewitt will have a second finalist on the night when his recent stable addition, The Locomotive, starts a hot favourite in the trotter's final.

The Locomotive, the only pacer or trotter to go through the three rounds of heats unbeaten, is a commanding $1.55 favourite from an ideal gate four.

"It's pinch yourself stuff," Hewitt said. "We thought both horses were primed going into it, but to get through and have genuine hopes in both finals is a huge thrill."

INTER DOMINION FINAL BARRIER DRAWS

PACERS

Front row: Jilliby Nitro ($9), Dangerous ($4.60), Don Hugo ($2.60), My Moonlite Dream ($16), Curly James ($12), Terry ($81), Jimartee ($101), Nerano ($26).

Back row: Captain Knock ($5.50), Max Delight ($18), Minstrel ($5.50), Petes Said So ($51). Emergencies: Cantfindabettorman, Perfect Stride.

TROTTERS

Front row: Toro Stride ($151), Aldebaran Vera ($26), Keayang Chucky ($5), The Locomotive ($1.55), Queen Elida ($6.50), Mufasa Metro ($26), Aldebaran Zeus ($31), Speedy Lover ($151).

Back row: Keayang Stuka ($51), Royal Dan ($41), Plymouth Chubb ($15), Parisian Artiste ($8.50). Emergencies: Courage Stride ($151), Constantinople ($151).

Off to menangle to cheer on the captain👏👏👏 Reckon he can get off the fence early given the speed. Hate doing it but it’s a nice collect coming so I Might lay off a little on Dangerous and a few small bets on the bolters Pete said So & Nerano

The train seems to have the trotters at his mercy with Chucky slight chance to ambush him late

Don Hugo does it McCarthy in Inter Dominion

Champion driver Luke McCarthy ticked the only missing big box in his phenomenal career with a monstrous Inter Dominion pacing final win on Don Hugo at Menangle on Saturday night.

McCarthy added the iconic race to the Miracle Mile, Hunter Cup, Victoria Cup and TAB Eureka on his trophy cabinet and this time trained the winner himself, too.

It was his 11th drive in a pacing final.

"It's a great one to get off the bucket list, it's taken me a few goes," McCarthy said.

Don Hugo capped a stunning rise to prominence, having burst into the big league winning the world's richest harness race, the $2.1m TAB Eureka at Menangle back on September 7.

"He was good then, he's better now. That's the great thing, every time he goes out for a break he comes back better and he's still only a four-year-old," McCarthy said.

"If he keeps building, he'll be up with the best I've driven. He has to be."

Don Hugo, who survived a stunning slugfest with star WA warrior Minstrel over the last 700m, obliterated the track record with a 1min 50.4sec mile rate for 2300m, taking a full second off the previous mark.

McCarthy, 42, has been a megastar of the sport for 15 years. He boasts almost 3000 wins, 80 at Group 1 level, plus a World Trotting Derby win in the US.

Minstrel's effort for second was outstanding, while David Aiken's remarkable rising nine-year-old Max Delight ran a terrific third.

In the trotting final, The Locomotive did a "Just Believe" and completed a clean sweep of all three heats and the final.

Trained and superbly driven in front by Goulburn's Brad Hewitt, The Locomotive left his rivals standing on the home bend and cruised home by nine metres over Victorian-trained stablemates, Keayang Chucky and Keayang Stuka, who ran second and third respectively for Marg Lee.

Hewitt was pinching himself with the biggest win of his career at his first drive in an Inter Dominion final.

"You don't get an easier drive than that … it's like winning a Grand Final by a huge margin."

It's the third successive year the winner has won all heats and final. Injured superstar Just Believe did it in 2022 and '23.

It takes a wise man a lifetime to grow a tree and a fool five minutes to kill one.

The Captains charged into this years final after a brave run last night. Draws 1,2 or 8 and here’s a great chance of running 2nd to the champ.
