So much for responsible shooters.

Police are investigating the shooting of 30 horses valued at $500,000 at Victoria River's Killarney Station. It's alleged that two members of a sporting shooters association committed the reckless crime.

Station manager Jamie Laurisson said, "It was a mind-numbing stupid, careless and reckless act".

"The loss of these horses has been a massive impact on the staff, management and principals of Killarney Station. Initially shock and disbelief then grief, anger, heartbreak and devastation".

It was reported the pair had no permit or written permission from the station managers or directors to shoot on the property.
"The horses were not shot in a humane or professional manner as one would expect from members of a shooters association," Mr Laurisson said.

"The two members of the shooting club involved did not have permission from the station management to shoot in this area."

"The station would be seeking compensation with years worth of work put into breeding and training the horses".

"The NT police are investigating the shooting and will do everything they can to bring about justice within the law, if it is deemed an illegal act. The company has also engaged a legal team to pursue a civil suit on behalf of our staff in seeking compensation".

It's hard to believe that someone could be this reckless and it would not surprise me if there is far more to this story than the initial reports. There is something definitely fishy with this one.

Thirty prized horses have been 'accidentally slaughtered' on a remote cattle station in the Northern Territory by members of a shooters club.

Killarney Station manager Jamie Laurisson reported 30 of their horses, which were worth half-a-million dollars, were savagely killed.

The two sports shooters entered the property without permission and went on a shooting spree.

Mr Laurisson described the shooter's acts as 'mind-numbingly stupid' stating they did not have permission to be there.

'The horses were not shot in a humane or professional manner as one would expect from members of a shooters' association,' he told NT News.

'The loss of these horses has had a massive impact on staff, management and (the) principles of Killarney station.

'Initially (there was) shock and disbelief, then grief, anger, heartbreak and devastation.'

Mr Laurisson said the police are investigating the shooting and will decide whether it is 'deemed a criminal act.

The cattle station will also seek compensation for years of hard work with breeding and training the horses.

'At Killarney our horses are what define us, they are our mates, members of our team, they are what make getting up before daylight every morning all worth it. Nothing is ever going to repair the heart break we are all feeling,' an post shared by the Station on Instagram read.

A legal team has also been hired to launch a civil suit on behalf of staff seeking compensation for their loss.

It takes a wise man a lifetime to grow a tree and a fool five minutes to kill one.

How can anyone use the term "accidentally slaughtered " .     You can't do something like that accidentally.

If you cant tell the diff between well cared for , well fed,  well groomed horses,  in a paddock close to the homestead, and wild horses, no way should you be turned out with a gun.  The station manager said they were so fat, and so quiet , they would have walked up to the vehicle.
He also said the shooting was most inhumane , so no matter what they shot, they were just gun happy good ole boys out for a night,s fun.  Shoot whatever moves.
Sports shooters.   Gun happy idiots to my mind.
