Vale Col McKenna: Victorian racing mourns a gentleman, a legendPopular and widely respected racehorse owner and breeder Colin McKenna has died after a short illness.
The self-made Warrnambool businessman, with interests in the meat processing, dairy and hospitality industries, raced multiple Group 1 winners including VRC Oaks and Caulfield Cup star Jameka in his green and blue horizontal stripe silks. McKenna's meat company, The Midfield Group, paid tribute to "our founder, fearless leader and mentor" on Sunday. "It is with heavy hearts the McKenna family wishes to advise our founder, fearless leader and mentor to many passed away this morning with his family by his side after a short illness." McKenna, 74, survived by wife Janice and their children, supported many people and causes — within and outside the racing industry — especially in Victoria's western districts. McKenna raised about $400,000 for local charities the past three years with a well-attended function at his Woolsthorpe pub — Union Station Hotel — before the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival. McKenna helped launch the career of powerhouse trainer Ciaron Maher. He knew Maher from an early age and urged him to leave Warrnambool about 15 years ago and open a stable at Caulfield. Success in time snowballed for Maher with the support of McKenna. Ciaron Maher Racing paid tribute to McKenna on Sunday. "Heaven gained a true gentleman this morning," CMR posted on X. "Our hearts go out to Janice and the entire McKenna family. "Fly high Col, we love you and you will be so very deeply missed."
Lindsay Park, who also trained feature winners for McKenna, joined in the tributes. "A true legend of the game whose spirit of generosity has been felt throughout our great sport," Lindsay Park posted. "The hearts of the Hayes family and the LP team go out to Janice and the whole McKenna family."
McKenna raced hundreds of horses the past 50 years and enjoyed success across Australia and internationally at Royal Ascot. He shared in the ownership of Caulfield Cup winner Duke De Sessa and Future History, who won the JRA Cup last Saturday.
McKenna's top horses included Jameka, Merchant Navy (Coolmore Stud Stakes, Diamond Jubilee Stakes), Regina Coeli (two Grand Annual Steeplechases), Hissing Sid (two Warrnambool Cups), Attrition (Toorak Handicap), Wil John (Jericho Cup) and Another Wil. Other notable horses he shared in the ownership of included Alaskan God, Buffalo River, Gregers, Moudre, Ruthven, Seaburge, The Fuzz and Interpretation, set to contest a third consecutive Melbourne Cup next week. McKenna, in 2021, was named a member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to community through his involvement with Peter's Project (Warrnambool Cancer Treatment Centre), Warrnambool Racing Club and philanthropic work. Racing Victoria chief executive Aaron Morrison extended "our deepest condolences" to the McKenna family on the industry's behalf.
"Colin was a popular and passionate member of the Victorian racing community and an icon in the state's southwest where he was a major employer, community leader and philanthropist," Morrison said. "Colin loved his racing, his horses and the people in our industry. In particular, he was a tremendous supporter of Warrnambool, the May Racing Carnival and a range of trainers within his local region." Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners' Association chair Jonathon Munz echoed the sentiment. "Col was a passionate racehorse owner and huge supporter of the industry. More importantly he was a terrific bloke and a man of great loyalty and integrity. He will be missed by everyone," Munz said. |

The Madden accident was terrible. Shocking bad luck for the couple, may they RIP.
Col McKenna was a big supporter of Ciaron's. RIP to him too.

Let me just wipe the drool off my screen …
Amazing once-in-a-racing-lifetime opportunities for those with a few million to spare. Sadly, that’s not me
