In the “Who Owns Horses” thread I’ve told how Bush Girl has been retired.

What the rest of her life entails is largely up to me.

We can sell her online for $1,000 or so and who knows where she ends up? That to me is an insult to the joy this mare has given us.

So I’m thinking I might make my first foray into breeding a mare.

I’ve got some practical experience thankfully but my pedigree homework is not as good.

I’ve given BP a heads up and asked her to post the mare’s page.

Then, if my breeding mentors on here could suggest a stallion…up to about $15k I’d love to hear it.

I’m not syndicating…but shares ($0.00) may become available 👍

diomed, I'll let FF answer you (he's probably still asleep; never worked a hard day until he started working on a horse stud Wink) but as far as I know the mare is in New South Wales, and FF is in Victoria.

The best of the best breeders work with the likes of Black Caviar etc and can’t breed a champ. I still think it’s a stab in the dark…..
Pick a very sound, well conformed, well performed stallion that you like and can afford and hope for the best. Probably just as likely to breed a good’un Thumbs UpBig smile

That’s a rounding error in our calculations HG. He’s in the mix.

How about this for some quick and hopefully not nasty suggestions, and the cheaper ones would also appear to fit Sister Dot's summary.

Optimum Suggestion

Henry Longfellow by Champion sire Dubawi from a mare by Galileo (Sadler’s Wells)

Bush Girl’s best performed sibling is by Poet’s Voice by Dubawi.

(b)  A mating between HL and Bush Girl appears excellent from a line breeding perspective,  providing Sadler’s Wells 4 x 5, Shirley Heights 5 x 6, 6 (twice via Darshaan), Mr Prospector 5, 6 x 6 and that sire’s soul mate Northern Dancer five times.

(c)   HL importantly also adds the sprinter/miler quality he shares with Dubawi and which is arguably required to provide some genuine (as distinct from cheap) speed to BG’s staying pedigree.

Unfortunately HL isn’t an inexpensive stallion at probably $16,500 in 2026 so back to the drawing board.

Alternative Choice No 1

Dalasan

A mating between he and BG is also excellent from a line-breeding perspective, with Darshaan

3 x 4, Sadler’s Wells 5 x 5, and once again plenty of the Mr Prospector/Northern Dancer cross.

On face value this wouldn’t appear to add any precocity however it’s well worth noting that Dalasan was a 1000m winner at 2 and a multiple Group winner at 1200, 1400 and 1600 at 3.

Dalasan stands for an advertised fee of $5,500 but could surely be secured for $3,300.

Alternative Choice No 2

Russian Camelot

This again appears excellent from a line breeding viewpoint, with Montjeu 3 x 4, Sadler’s Wells 4, 4 x 5 and further Northern Dancer to that above via Danehill.

Whilst RC’s Group wins were at 1800m and 2500m he actually he won three from five as a 2yo.

RC could probably be sourced from between $8,800 and $11,000 in 2026.

All these matches would seem to provide the opportunity for success in the 1400-2000m range.

Thanks from the bottom of my heart SC!

My mate who bred Bush Girl reckons Russian Camelot is one of the most impressive stallions he’s seen(a few years ago though).

👍

Beyond Question is a very promising Russian Camelot 3yo, having won 2 and placed 2nd from just three starts with his last start win being in the recent Albury Guineas.  He's bred 4, 4 Sadler's Wells, 4 x 5 Danehill and 5, 5, 6, 7 x 5, 6 Northern Dancer.

Compare that to the Russian Camelot/Bush Girl match which has Sadler’s Wells 4, 4 x 5 and further Northern Dancer to that above via Danehill.

Simple but effective.
