Full brother to Verry Elleegant born

As well as looking forward to another lucrative spring campaign for Verry Elleegant, her breeder and co-owner Don Goodwin has received further welcome news with the birth overnight at Grangewilliam Stud of a brother to the mighty mare.

The leggy bay colt is the first live foal produced by the Danroad mare Opulence since the loss of her 2019 colt foal, which also meant she could not be served that year.

I had been hoping for a filly to carry on the line with, Goodwin said. But after what happened last time Im still happy to get a healthy colt.

Mark (Corcoran, Grangewilliam Stud principal) tells me it was a straightforward foaling and mother and son are both well. From the photograph he sent me I can see hes a good leggy foal, so all in all its a great result.

Opulence will return to Zed, who Corcoran anticipates will cover a book of 70-80 mares this spring off the back of a season that besides Verry Elleegant also included Gr.3 Wellington Cup (3200m) and Listed NZ St Leger (2600m) winner Waisake, Listed Ballarat Cup (2000m) winner Irish Flame and Gr.2 Avondale Cup (2400m) winner Robusto.

After her first-up second to Mounga in last weeks Gr. 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick, Verry Elleegant is scheduled to start next in the Gr. 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on September 18 ahead of Melbourne features.

Subsequent to Victorian jockey Mark Zahra being suspended for three months over his involvement in last weeks illegal Mornington gathering, Damian Lane has been engaged for a carnival campaign targeting the Gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m) and possibly the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

NZ stallions shine in Australia

The NZ suffix has featured prominently in Australia this spring, so its no surprise a couple of Kiwi stallions are featuring prominently on the Australian Leading Sires table this season.

The Kiwi brigade is being led by Grangewilliam Stud stallion Zed, who sits fourth on the list with A$5.8 million in earnings, while Rich Hill Studs Shocking isnt too far behind in sixth, with A$5.4 million to his credit.

Other New Zealand stallions to feature prominently include Savabeel (9th, A$4.5 million), Tavistock (17, A$2.7 million), Sacred Falls (32, A$1.9 million), and Per Incanto (33, A$1.8 million).

Zeds success has once again been headlined by his daughter Verry Elleegant who sealed her champion status with her dominant win in the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on Tuesday.

It was the Chris Waller-trained mares tenth Group One success, with her victories at elite-level now ranging from 1400m to 3200m.

She didnt just win, she demolished them, Grangewilliam Stud principal Mark Corcoran said.

A few people had their doubts about her on top of the ground on Tuesday, but it was no problem at all for her. She is just so versatile and tough; she is a champion.

Shes another Melbourne Cup winner for New Zealand and the second Melbourne Cup winner for Grangewilliam Stud (Doriemus, 1995), so its a pretty proud moment for us.

Its a great result to have him feature so prominently on the Australian sires table. He just keeps leaving good horses and we are absolutely rapt.

Corcoran is now looking forward to next week where he is hoping the John Wheeler-trained Beaudz Well can add another Cup to his mantle when he contests the Gr.3 Martin Collins New Zealand Cup (3200m) at Riccarton.

Id say look out next week in the New Zealand Cup with Beaudz Well, I think he is a big chance, Corcoran said. With a bit of luck there might be another Cup coming his way.

Zed stands at Grangewilliam Stud for a fee of $6,000+GST.

Keeping with the Melbourne Cup theme, former Cup winner Shocking, who stands at Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand, has also had a marvellous spring in Australia.

His charge has been led by the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Im Thunderstruck, who has won two of this three starts this term, including the Gr.1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and A$7.5 million Golden Eagle (1500m).

Rich Hill Stud principal John Thompson has been delighted with his results across the Tasman, which has him sixth on the Australian Sires table.

He has always been capable of throwing a good horse and he has got a few good ones around at the moment, so its great, Thompson said.

He is a very good horse, hes a Group One horse, and Group One winners in Australia are hard to come by.

Thompson has enjoyed following Im Thunderstrucks success in Australia and was over the moon with his winning result in the rich Golden Eagle last weekend.

The prizemoney they have over there is incredible, he said.

I think everyone in Australia really rates the horse. Just the way he has won his races, he hasnt had a lot of luck in the running, but he has managed to make his own luck. It takes a pretty good horse to do that.

Winning races like that is what it is all about. Australian racing is becoming almost the world benchmark these days. You have a stallion that can throw Group One winners over there and everybody takes notice.

It is extremely important for any stallion and it is great to see the way the New Zealand horses have performed overall this spring, by a range of stallions.

The uniquely named Elephant is another who has put Shockings name up in lights over the spring, highlighted by his Gr.3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) win, and placings in the Gr.2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) and Gr.2 Crystal Mile (1600m).

He looked extremely promising, but from his first win at Caulfield he seemed to capture the imagination of people, Thompson said.

He has got a big future and he is relatively lightly raced.

Shocking stands at Rich Hill Stud for a fee of $8,500+GST.

Zed, the rags-to-riches sire of champion mare Verry Elleegant, has died in New Zealand.

On Sunday, Grangewilliam Stud confirmed that the 22-year-had to be euthainised by vets on humane grounds after suffering a serious bout of colic.

A modestly performed son of Zabeel, Zed sired 17 Stakes winners, including 11-time Group 1 winner Verry Elleegant, and also developed a reputation as a super sire of jumpers, including Grand Annual 'Chase hero Zed Em.

Grangewilliam stud master Mark Corcoran paid tribute to Zed, who famously took up residence in the farm's stallion barn after a period serving non-racing mares.

"Zed was a massive part of our family," Corcoran said.

"He was loved by all staff at Grangewilliam, past and present.

"He has become a bit of a cult hero and his story resonates with everyone; coming back from being sacked and sent away serving Clydesdales on the hills of Erewhon Station, to ending up at Grangewilliam Stud and siring world champion mare and Melbourne Cup heroine Verry Elleegant.

"Zed is the epitome of the dream of racing, the underdog, unfashionable working-class horse who beat the world's best despite the riches thrown at achieving that success. "When we acquired Zed, we were in a tough spot without a stallion of any significance to draw in the mares and Zed pulled us through that hole and kept the mares coming in the gate.  "He has literally paid our bills and put our children through school.

"Today we have a fantastic stallion line-up: The Bold One, Derryn and our exciting new boy, Hilal, thanks in no small part to the deeds of Zed.

"Zed garnered a loyal fan base throughout his career. The progeny of Zed have won just about every major cups and jumps race in New Zealand. He passed on his sire Zabeel's toughness and staying prowess."

‘Crikey, a Melbourne Cup horse was bred here ... that’s cool’ - Final chapter still to come for Zed

By Tim Rowe

The final resting place for Zed near the front gate of Grangewilliam will provide a permanent reminder of the stallion’s achievements at stud and arguably a nod to a bygone era of New Zealand breeding.

Kiwi studmaster Mark Corcoran spent the 24 hours after the death of 22-year-old Zed - the sire of 2021 Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant - contemplating how best to ensure the sire’s legacy and his link to Australasia’s most famous horse race isn’t forgotten.

In the end, there was only one fitting option, so on Monday he buried Zed next to Opulence, a mare he had been mated to eight times during her 12 years at stud.

One of those matings, Opulence’s third living foal, produced champion mare Verry Elleegant, New Zealand’s fifth locally bred and most recent Melbourne Cup winner this century who did earlier this year.

Zed was humanely euthanised due to a bout of colic at the weekend. Opulence had died two years earlier. Now the pair posthumously stand side by side near Grangewilliam’s float entrance, located near Wanganui, six hours’ drive south of Auckland.

A small tree will be planted and a plaque will be placed at the site to commemorate the pair and their place in Australasian racing history through the deeds of Verry Elleegant, an 11-time Group 1 winner who died earlier this year, the best of Zed’s 17 individual stakes winners and a host of hardy stayers and jumpers such as Zed Em and Affluential.

“It is not every day you get a Melbourne Cup winner and we’ve been fortunate enough on this farm in my lifetime to have two,” Corcoran told The Straight

“I was a first year university student when Doriemus won the Melbourne Cup (in 1995) and that was pretty exciting.

“I thought it’d be pretty cool to do it again, so it was great to see it happen with Verry Elleegant.  We had the sire and the dam both on the farm from both Doriemus and Verry Elleegant.

Corcoran and his family had to say a sudden goodbye to their bread and butter sire, a horse who attracted a “real fan base of owner-trainer type people”, having been resurrected as a thoroughbred stallion after being reclaimed from the South Island where he was covering Clydesdale mares.

While Corcoran has fond memories of Zed’s past, the stallion can still make his mark  through his 50 unraced two-year-olds, 31 yearlings and 46 mares due to foal this season.

There will be a smattering of Zeds among the 2025 NZB Karaka sale next January including a handful of Grangewilliam-bred stock inspected by the sales company’s bloodstock team only last week.

“He leaves horses that are just a great example of a New Zealand-bred horse. They are sound, tough and durable and talented as well. He’s really carved out a niche for quite a long time now, particularly while he’s been at Grangewilliam,” NZB bloodstock sales manager Kane Jones said.

“He’s always had a number of handy horses around, but he’s also left a champion in Verry Elleegant.

“She scaled some amazing heights and, of course, won a Melbourne Cup. There are not many horses who can lay claim to that.”

Among the crop of two-year-olds is a three-quarter brother to Verry Elleegant, who will be offered as Lot 81 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale in November. He was bred by Corcoran in conjunction with Denise Ward, the owner of the colt’s dam Moonofklairessa.

The colt’s year older brother, the unraced three-year-old Rightzedfred, was bought by trainer Chris Waller and bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster at the 2023 Karaka Yearling Sale.

His sibling would have been sold through the same sales ring earlier this year, too, had it not been for an untimely illness, forcing his withdrawal from the sale and a change of plans.

“He broke in really well by all accounts. I haven’t heard much for a while, but by the early reports, they were very happy with how he was going. No news is good news in this game,” Corcoran said.

“He is a really nice horse. He won’t be missed at the sale.”

He might just be another Kiwi-bred Derby winner - and who could rule out a Melbourne Cup?

“There’s not too many of those types being bred in New Zealand now, those staying types. Who knows how long before we get another New Zealand-bred Melbourne Cup winner, but Zed’s certainly done the job for us,” Corcoran said.

“We will have a nice little tree and a plaque there to remember him. Breeders will drive in and see that and think, ‘oh crikey, a Melbourne Cup horse was bred here. That’s cool’.”

He's just had another Group 1 winner in New Zealand, 7yo gelding Ladies Man (out of G3 Kingston Town winning and G2 Hill Stakes placed mare Just Polite) storming home over the top of favourite La Crique to win the G1 Mufhasa Classic over a mile at WFA at Trentham.

Oppie Bosson was on board, his 99th G1 success, he'll be a good chance to hit his hundred over the next month in NZ.

New SW for Zed - Just Charlie wins Listed Metropolitan Trophy

Media Release - Saturday November 8

A perfectly judged front-running victory on Just Charlie in the Listed Nautical Boat Insurance Metropolitan Trophy (2600m) capped a memorable New Zealand riding debut at Riccarton on Saturday for apprentice jockey Logan Bates.

Born and raised in Canterbury and a son of leading southern rider Kylie Williams, Bates is forging a successful career as an apprentice in Victoria. The 24-year-old has ridden over 110 winners, headed by a first black-type success with Jigsaw in the Gr.2 McEwen Stakes (1200m) on Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley last month.

Bates jumped at the opportunity to return to his homeland on Saturday and ride against his mother for the first time. Both mother and son got on the board early in the afternoon – Bates with Enterprise in the One Good Horse At Avonhead Tavern Premier (1100m) and Williams aboard Platinum Pantheon in the Scenic Hotel Group Premier (1200m).

But then Bates stole the show with a feature-race triumph as he guided the Kevin Myers-trained Just Charlie to an all-the-way win in the Metropolitan.

Bates took up the lead within the first 100m of the race and was able to dictate terms from that point on. He began to up the ante and pull ahead of the field coming down the side of the track, and then Just Charlie kicked off the home turn and put three or four lengths on his nearest challenger.

Titicaca launched a powerful finish from the back of the field and got to within three-quarters of a length at the finish, but there would be no catching Just Charlie.

Bates exchanged fist bumps with his proud mother after unsaddling and was loudly cheered by family members on the front of the stand.

“It’s a big thrill and I have to give credit to ‘Dummy’ (Myers) and his team, they presented the horse in super order,” he said. “I was quite excited to ride him today after looking through his replays, because I could see his staying capability.

“There wasn’t a lot of pressure in the race and I was able to just let him do it his own way. He’s a big, strong, big-striding horse. I let him roll and ramped it up from the 1000m. He just gave me a wonderful feel. I was even able to have a couple of looks at the big screen to see how far in front we were.”

Just Charlie has had 24 starts for six wins, six placings and $206,435 in prize-money, and he now shares $4 favouritism with Titicaca for next Saturday’s Gr.3 Martin Collins 162nd New Zealand Cup (3200m).

He is the 21st stakes-winner for Zed, best known as the sire of Australian Horse of the Year Verry Elleegant and is the best of four winners from Danasinga mare Goody Two Shoes from the fmaily of Group I winner Wonder Dancer.

“We think he’ll love going up to 3200m for the New Zealand Cup next week,” Myers’ son Jason said. “He was rated beautifully in front today by Logan and he just outstayed them in the end. Logan is a very good rider – we wouldn’t mind having him back home in New Zealand a bit more.

“Just Charlie’s ready to race now and we’ll just keep him ticking over through the week ahead of the Cup next Saturday.” – LOVERACING.NZ News Desk.
