All it proves HG is that you're looking for confirmation of your existing opinion rather than facts, that's why the 2% excites you so.

I don't follow Oz politics much but isn't the rise of One Nation at the expense of the Libs proof that the Libs are no longer seen as a distinct alternative to Labor? It's as simple as that in the end, right?

Well he probably has a more straightforward answer than all the intellectual gymnastics I see on political threads. Just the same rise of populism that the rest of the globe has seen for the last couple of decades, for the same reasons, I'm guessing.

Stayer, a big part of ON rise is stealing from LNP. So that swing is inconsequential to elections.
The posse think thats the ONLY reason though.
Whats also happening is a small move in the needle from Labor or Labor preference voters. At the moment it is probably 2-3% so not enough to change election results but it is moving in the 'right' direction for ON. |

As opposed to you basing your opinion based on facts you completely misread eg Labor/Green swing was 1% not 3%. Its not about exciting me or not. Its about the truth.

Well worth a read. How refreshing to read a well written and sourced argument. Interesting that most of academia (if the essay is reflective of the true situation) seems to have only been writing about populism for less than 10 years.

Liberal Party in SA preferences One Nation in Ngadjuri and thus gifts a seat to ON leading to that Party's first Lower House State seat anywhere other than in Qld.
Preference Labor or some Independent and they arguably retain the seat.

How would that work?
LNP finished 3rd in the count. Preferences to independent void cos indendent finished lower. Preference to Labor and Labor win the seat. Isnt that how it works? Unless claiming people changed their vote because of the preferencing?

I dare say the average punter thinks that "populism" is another way of saying "popularism". Which is kinda the opposite.

LNP were 3rd. After 4th-7th (or how many ever in the seat) got knocked out LNP were still 3rd. Therefore they got knocked out and wherever LNP preferences went would have won the seat. Rather than a one worder please explain how LNP could have won the seat as we'll either find out its incorrect and I can carry on with my understanding of preferences or I'll learn something
