Okay I have done my horses to watch for each category and the early selections for the spring group 1's but my internet connection keeps cutting out and so I will have to post that at a later stage, but I thought I would steal furious's thunder Big smile and set the thread up now before the first stakes races of the season.

Hopefully I can post the ones to watch during the next week.

Oh I have favourites but can only hope they step up to the mark for the season. My pickes of recent years from the sales have not been at the top of the tree.  I'm blaming not getting to sales with covid.  You can only see so much online.

Of course Espiona, Illation, Artorius, Paulele, Bruckner, Get in the Spirit, Xtravagant Star, He's Xceptional, Cythera, Quang Tri, Giannis, Lofty Strike, Ranges and  others which I've followed from the sales are high on the list of ones I look for.

Almost anything from the Juliet line!  That's a given and include Quang Tri who showed some late season form.

But I really want the Golden Slipper winner to come out and at least be pushed out over 1600m.  Same with the She's Extreme.  I don't want to see them endlessly going around over 1200m.  I even hope to see the same with Best of Bordeaux who like Anamoe was a great run in the slipper.

Anyway early days yet and haven't decided who to follow.  I hope Anamoe comes out and delivers but his mind wasn't always on the job last season and that will be a worry if he continues that way.

But hey the good horses are starting to trial so who cares.  Some good racing is just a few weeks away.

Watched Anamoe trial the other day , was a muck lather going on to the track , trialled well , but to people who like a punt , he's a definite yard watch imho .

Okay lets see who we are looking at seeing over the next season.

Obviously no 2yo's and I have decided to split the categories into Group 1 contenders and non group 1 contenders. I have also placed the 3yo's into one group so the males and females are in the one group.

I am also still very wary of trusting the Sydney autumn form and last Saturday's Missile Stakes has done nothing to quell those feelings as Forbidden Love, Nimalee and Hilal were not great in admittedly an unsuitable race Confused

Lets get into it.

3yo's.

Group 1's - Daumier, Best Of Bordeaux, Sejardan, Jacquinot, Rise Of the Masses, Semillion, Brosnan, Sebonack, Political Debate, Letsrollthedice, Williamsburg, Sharp'N'Smart, Basquiat, Owen County, Man In The Mirror, Aft Cabin, Shalatin (needs it dry), Showcourt, Yaki Ishi, Magic, Amelia's Jewel, Fireburn, She's Extreme, Sheeza Belter, See You In Heaven, Seven Veils, Coolangatta, Russian Conquest (needs it dry), Dashing Legend, Paris D'or, I'm Lovinya, Waltz On By, Lambada.

Non Group 1's - Ebhaar, Cythera, Miss Revolutionary, Nanagui, Swiss Exile, Exo Lady, Miss Roseiano, Man In The Mirror, Lethal Thoughts, Tijuana, Crossroads, Eye Of The Eagle, Twin Stars, Brereton, Merchant Prince, Rampant Lion, Seven Sisters, English Riviera, Lady Laguna, Miss Faberge, He's Heaven, Ojai, Zambezi River, Greece, Great Barrier Reef.

4yo's.

Group 1's - Illation, Anamoe, Converge, Alegron, Benaud, Barb Raider, Pinarello, Dark Destroyer, Character, Gypsy Goddess, Hinged, Fangirl, Espiona, Profondo, Bon's A Pearla, Lightsaber, Startantes, Paulele, Overpass, Mazu (very interested to see how he goes on a drier surface), Artorius, Vilana, La Crique, Yaphet, Prince Of Boom, Sword Of State, In The Congo, Argentia, Zouzarella, Jamaea.

Non Group 1's - Party For One, A Very Fine Red, Mr Mozart, Flying Crazy, Battleton, Seradess, Ingratiating, General Beau, Glint Of Hope, Detonator Jack, Straight Aaron, Le Villi, Heresy, Hellfast, Zapateo, Arcaded, Generation, Prix De Turn, Pinstriped, So You See, Yearning (just hope she stays in Melbourne), Ranch Hand, Maurice's Medad, Captivant, Hilal, Pascero, Zethus, Bacchanalia, King Of Sparta, Spirit Of Gaylard, Brigantine, Seradess, Extreme Warrior, Kiss Sum, Alpine Edge, Military Expert.

Older Horses.

Group 1's - Nature Strip, Eduardo, Masked Crusader, Marabi, September Run, Halvorsen, Rothfire, Duais, Montefilia, Zaaki, Numerian, Cascadian, Inspirational Girl, Mr Brightside, I'm Thunderstruck, Ayrton, Apache Chase, Sheraz, Surefire, Knights Order, Stockman, Maximal, Private Eye, Forbidden Love, Nimalee, Turaath, Tofane, Sierra Sue, Count De Rupee, Mo'unga, Huetor, Hungry Heart, Levante, Lost And Running, Gold Trip, Mugatoo.

Non Group 1's - Taksu, Annavisto, Yonce, Flying Mascot, La Gai Soleil, Snapdancer, Najmaty, Stageman, Juan Diva, Letzbeglam, Laws Of Indices, Irish Sequel, Ellsberg, Mirra Vision, Kissonallforcheeks, Foxy Frida, Aramayo, Milford, Poland, Mount Popa, Belluci Babe, Bankers Choice, Just Folk, Promise Of Success, Ballistic Lover, Emanate, Marboosha, Steinem, Nonconformist, Lunar Flare, Kemalpasa, Scallopini, The Astrologist.

I think we have a good group of horses from those categories to have a season of success.

Now for the spring group 1's. I will give a 4yo and an older horse selection.

Winx Stakes - Anamoe & Duais
Memsie Stakes - Illation & Apache Chase
Makybe Diva Stakes - Inspirational Girl & Mo'unga (I am not sure any 4yo will be ready for this race although horses like Lightsaber and Pinstriped could win)
George Main Stakes - Converge & Hungry Heart
Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes - Lightsaber & Sierra Sue
Moir Stakes - Paris D'or, Paulele & Eduardo
Underwood Stakes - La Crique/Dark Destroyer (one of the NZ'ers) & Numerian
Golden Rose - Daumier, Jacquinot & Best Of Bordeaux
Metropolitan - Alegron & Sheraz
Flight Stakes - She's Extreme & Seven Veils
Epsom - Converge & Hungry Heart
Turnbull Stakes - One of the NZ'ers & Zaaki
Spring Champion - Showcourt & Sharp'N Smart
Toorak Hcp - Barb Raider & Laws Of Indices
Might & Power Stakes - Anamoe & Mo'unga
Caulfield Guineas - Aft Cabin & Magic
1000 Guineas - I'm Lovinya & Waltz On By
Caulfield Cup - Yaphet & Duais
Manikato Stakes - Shalatin, Paulele & Rothfire
Cox Plate - Anamoe & Gold Trip
VRC Derby - Political Debate & Sharp N Smart
Coolmore Stud - Best Of Bordeaux & Shalatin
Cantala Stakes - Illation & I'm Thunderstruck
Empire Rose - Espiona & Mirra Vision
Melbourne Cup - No Australian horse will finish top four. Duais will be the first Australian runner home alongside Montefilia.
VRC Oaks - Seven Sisters & winner of the Wakeful
Mackinnon Stakes - Mo'Unga & Heutor

Cantala is no longer on Derby Day mate, it has been moved to Stakes day and renamed the Champions Mile with an increased purse and changed to WFA conditions.

The MacKinnon is now also called the Champions Stakes and the sprint the Champions Sprint.

Voyager, your George Main/Epsom tip Hungry Heart is already officially retired to the breeding barn - so you’ll have to find a sub for her.

For all those worried about inbreeding to Danehill Zoukerino is another one bred 3m x 3f.  Like Giga Kick (inbred to the 8f family through Redoute's, Nijinsky (twice), Try My Best, THe Minstrel and dam Rekindled Applause) Zoukerino has four lines of his female line 7-a through Danehill (twice), Bletchingly and his dam Walk with Attitude.

While a third three year old winner yesterday - Bound for Home carries the cross of siblings Canny Lad and Canny Lass and Danehill 4m x 4m.  I picked her from the sales as she also decends from Juliet and I do keep my eyes open for them.  THis is the family of Silent Witness who was a son of Jade Cherie's full sister Jade Tiara.  Also I've found in the past the line likes Encosta de Lago (She will Reign) and Fastnet Rock (Catchy) blood and I didn't mind the full sibling cross and Mr Prospector double doesn't hurt either.  I'm hoping this filly can go on to the Oaks but no doubt she will be kept to sprints.  Pity as plenty of strength in her pedigree.

This line of Juliet gave us Hi Jinx (Melbourne Cup), Shifnal's Pride (Royal S, George Adams), Fair Filou (ARC Queen Elizabeth H, Avondale Cup), Rainfall (Avondale Cup, Royal S) etc.

Talking about good pedigrees Mr Brightside shows how good families might bide their time for a few generations but they come back.  The funny thing is he's by the other brother.  Helmet and Epaulette were great gallopers and Bullbars picked up a stakes race so he had some ability but he has a very good son in Mr Brightside.

Then once again we bemoan the early demise of Tavistock this time because of him showing ability as a sire of dams.  But what happened with Keepable (Keeper from Delia's Choice).  Only three named and one to race with no wins.  Sent to Tavistock twice and Zabeel who sired her one runner she was just an example that even good blood sometimes just doesn't come through.

Her dam Delia's CHoice (Sir Tristram) had one G1 winner in Foxwood (Captain Cook Stakes) and of her four named daughters it was only Foxwood who became a dam to a stakes winner.

But the next dam was a great broodmare producing four stakes winners to Sir Tristram including the G1 winners Gurner's Lane (Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup), Sovereign Red (Australian Derby, Rothman's 100,000, VRC Derby, Underwood S, Western Mail Classic, Caulfield GUineas and runner up to Kingston Town in a Cox Plate) and Trichelle (Marlboro Cup).

It is to be seen if Mr Brightside can reach those heights but he's on his way.

Talking about female lines.  The decendants of White and Blue (GER) 1876 include the great stallion Savabeel.  But back in the 1960's it produced a two year old mud lark called Pago Pago who was sold to America where he stood at stud before coming home to Australia in 1980.  His name to well and truly out there in the world thoroughbred pedigree thanks to Dancing Brave his Arc de Triomphe winner who is a son of Pago Pago's granddaughter Navajo Princess.  Dancing Brave's full sister Jolypha (Prix de Diane G1) is the granddam of NZ based Redwood (Northern Dancer Turf S G1).

So it is interesting to see Calypso Reign by far the best winner by Barbados (great grandson of equally great Emancipation) come out and represent the Pago Pago female branch of White and Blue's Australian family.

Mr Brightside was good yesterday I'll give you that but given the Lawrence is now clearly the third wheel for resuming horses behind the Memsie and Warwick Stakes, as shown by the quality of the field behind him, I'd like to see him do it against a better field before calling him a top liner.

In the list above you will not see Jacquinot's name. That is because I am unsure what he is being aimed at. He is a great chance in anything he races in either over the sprint distances or the mile.

I was very tempted to put a 3yo in for the Australian Cup. I think this is a year where a 3yo could go well against the expected field. Elliptical and Mr Maestro failed in the Mackinnon but that was after a tough prep and they will be five months older.

There are a few selections who need things to happen. Like Sharp N Smart backing up from the Rosehill Guineas to the Tancred. I know Graeme Rogerson's mindset and if he thinks this horse is as good as he thinks he usually tests the 3yo's against the older horses. The fly in the ointment here is that he will need to back up 3 weeks in a row if was to go for the Australian Derby as well.

The 1400m+ for the 2yo's seem to see late comers do well recently, but I have not seen a 2yo so far who I think would be a genuine 1400m+ 2yo so I have reserved judgement on those races.

Some of those selections also depend on where the horses will be racing. A horse like Alligator Blood would be ideally suited in the CF Orr and Futurity if he is being aimed at the All Star Mile. NZ horses like La Crique and Dark Destroyer could stay at home but they are good enough to win in Sydney or Brisbane. Will In Secret be racing in Melbourne or will she be kept to Sydney?

And just like that we are welcoming the Autumn Carnival with the opening G1 race in Melbourne today. Hopefully the Spring season champs like Anamoe, Nature Strip, I'm Thunderstruck, Jacqinot, Alligator Blood, Coolangatta, In Secret, Mo'Unga, Zaaki, Private Eye, Golden Mile, Giga Kick etc can come out to play.

We've lost a few like She's Extreme and Snapdancer to injury so hopefully the rest come out and give us a good Autumn.  But who will step into their shoes and become a G1 horse?

Then there is the mystery of the two year olds.  I still haven't decided who will and wont step up and take the Golden Slipper or Blue Diamond.  Will the early two year olds like Platinum Jubilee, PErfect Proposal, Empire of Japan, Tach Ten, Zulfiqar, King's Gambit, Arkansaw Kid, Krakarib, Charm Stone etc return and stay ahead or will a late comer spoil their party.

Plenty of two year olds have shown some ability from December on with Malaboom, Godfather, Saltaire, Sovereign Fund, Skirt the Law, De Sonic Boom, The Instructor, Red Resistance, Learning to Fly, Madeira Sunrise etc leading the pack.  But it is really this weekend that we start to find out the truth for the Autumn two year olds.

And then there is the headache which always comes when trying to sort out which three year olds will go over 2400m for the Derby and oaks.  It doesn't help when the VRC Oaks winner is already out in the paddock with an injury.  Will Golden Mile or Aft Cabin go out over a trip this Autumn or be kept to the mile and below?  Or Sharp 'n' Smart and Elliptical continue their close encounters.  Which has gone forward?  Or there is Berkley Square who promised so much in the spring to just fall short.

Not to forget the VRC derby winner Manzoice or the maiden Aberfeldie Boy who could also have taken than next step.  Or Zennzella and Pavitra and Queen Air looking to take She's Extreme mantel.

The Autumn is ready and waiting to entertain and bemuse us all.

Keep an eye on the Waikato Sprint at Te Rapa today furious as there are about six or seven horses, mainly mares, who we could see in either sydney or brisbane.

Ok we are nearly to the Golden Slipper with the final field being given.  Yeah I haven't lost my run with Facile making the field for my picks and Exploding decending from a filly I picked years ago.  A family I don't get to see much of through the sales as Woodlands and the Darley took alot of them on.

Exploding has the honour of decending from a Golden Slipper winner herself in Fairy Walk.  She was a half sister to a great sire Planet Kingdom who died too soon after injuring himself at stud.  Planet Kingdom was better know for his middle distance performers with Ming Dynasty being one of my all time favourite greys.  As the female line decending from the dam of Phar Lap (ie same as Sunline) you can't get much better it you tried.

Now Facile has an interesting pedigree being by Trapeze Artist (himself from the Fairy Walk female line) out of a Pierro (Golden Slipper) mare.  To top that off she decends from the dam of Subzero (Melbourne Cup) but Subby's dam was a 3/4 sister in blood to the dam of Marscay (Golden Slipper).  To add to the picture you also find Flying Spur as the sire of the third dam of Facile.

Not that Exploding is the only one from a blue blooded line.  Cylinder decends from Lonhro's dam Shadea who herself won a lead up to the Slipper (Sweet Embrace S)  As the dam of winners of 31 stakes races Shadea doesn't need much more to back her up but then her grandam My Tricia was also a great mare is Grosvenor (VRC Derby, Caulfield Guineas, VRC Sires', Pago Pago etc to his name)

Shinzo's dam Samaready won the Blue Diamond and A J Moir Stakes so all class there also but only a few generations back you find the dam of County Tyrone (Sydney Cup, Qld Derby, Metropolitan H etc).

I'm pretty sure the above all have one thing in common.  A mix of sprinters and out and out stayers coming from the same female lines.  You don't need a speedy squid to win the slipper.

Just looking through the rest of the field you come up with the greats like Whisked, Tie the Knot, Arkady, Nellie Morse (a USA mare inbred to our Trenton and also carrying Abercorn a son of Chester in her pedigree), Maybe Mahal, Shindig, Linton, Cozzene, Attley, Snippets, September Run and She's Country (NZ Oaks) etc.  Some speedsters and some more middle distance runners and even stayers.

I haven't decided yet who to back but I'll be there cheering them on.

Do they electronically draw the barriers for the Slipper?  Or are the entries placed in a revolving barrel like they once did with Tattslotto etc?
Either way they might need to change the procedure or give the barrel another turn or two, otherwise how can you explain how the last seven acceptors drew 9,10,11,12,14,15 and 16?  Shocked Ouch
