Its funny - wasn't Tim a high profile antigambling man for years. Along with Willkie & Xenophon. Just looking at the the gambling industry as a whole at the moment you can only conclude they have all been abject failures in that field of endeavour

Ouch

He popped up on tv the other day, strangely. But I was only half-listening and can't quite recall what he was pontificating about.

I think it might have been criticising Crown being granted a gambling licence, after all.

I prefer Tim to his brother.

He is currently chair of the Community Council for Australia after retiring from his position of chair of World Vision Australia among other things. Part of his work with CCA is as an advocate for gaming reform.

He was on ABC  a few weeks ago welcoming Labor's election and Andrew Leigh to the charities portfolio.

I don't think Tim or Nick Xenophon will ever cure Aussies of gambling.

And, quite frankly, I don't think they have any right to dictate what people do with their money.

It does appear over the past week "it has rained on Tim's Parade ". Here is what Tim Flannery wrote in New Scientist back in June 2007, under the heading, “Australia – not such a lucky country.”

Over the past 50 years southern Australia has lost about 20 per cent of its rainfall, and one cause is almost certainly global warming. Similar losses have been experienced in eastern Australia, and although the science is less certain it is probable that global warming is behind these losses too. But by far the most dangerous trend is the decline in the flow of Australian rivers: it has fallen by around 70 per cent in recent decades, so dams no longer fill even when it does rain. Growing evidence suggests that hotter soils, caused directly by global warming, have increased evaporation and transpiration and that the change is permanent. I believe the first thing Australians need to do is to stop worrying about “the drought” – which is transient – and start talking about the new climate.

The cities need drought-proofing by, for example, installing water tanks in all dwellings that can accept them. Because in affected areas the decline in river flow is three times that in rainfall, water tanks that use roofs as catchments are now far more effective than dams for supplying drinking water in cities such as Sydney and Brisbane.

So there you have it.  Way back in 2007 Tim Flannery said that the dams in Australia will no longer fill even when it does rain and that water tanks on roofs were more effective than dams for supplying drinking water in cities such as Sydney and Brisbane.  The line was that Australia’s East Coast cities are running out of water – due to global warming.

I do not need to tell you the main dams in Sydney are over-flowing with water. So Dr Flannery dropped his claim that Australian cities will run out of water due to climate change.  It has been replaced by the claim – in The Angry Summer –  that climate change will lead, inter alia, to “extreme rainfall and damaging flooding”.

In May 2011, Flannery, when challenged over his 2007 forecast, told AFR journalist Marcus Priest that he “can’t remember everything” he said just four years earlier, but in May 2012, Flannery told the ABC’s Jonathan Green that his previous predictions had been taken “out of context”.

It does appear both Tim's ...Flannery & Costello are each outliers. Flannery with dams in Sydney & Costello with gambling.

I know Tim is you righards favourite climatologist but I hate to break it to you - he's not a climatologist.Shocked It would be far more interesting to me if you can show some eminent climatologists getting it laughably wrong.

In that video clip poor Tim references  James Hansen, "the father of global warming theory ", who as an expert,  predicted way back before 2007 that world ocean water levels would rise by 25 metres and anybody living within an ocean view of their home they would lose their home.
The Gold Coast ( Qld ) , Bondi (NSW ), St Kilda ( Vic ) and Scarborough ( WA ) have not been washed away so what should we make of James Hansen's predictions  and poor Tim Flannery falling for them ?

Surely that is the point. The dope was put on a pedestal by PT's mob for his climate views. How did that happen ?

In view of the floods around Sydney today, I wonder whether Tim Flannery,  that prophet of doom, still owns that waterfront mansion he bought on the Hawkesbury River not long after he made that interview ?

Just listening to that interview it is quite embarrassing. Yet in his day the thumb suckers lapped it up. Just like Big Al & his Inconvenient Truth doco that had us all dead by now.

And people wonder why there are sceptics

Throw in a few Tims, Smith and Wilson in the Tim thread. They are always good for a laugh.
