Can't remember when outrider's and pony escorts to the gate weren't on the track.  It is because of the way our horses are kept up and trained. Our system is too limited in track and group training time.  22 hours a day in a stall is not optimal.  Agree that the RS visuals were unpleasant.  Very rare to see on race day.   Old traditions die hard here.  It would be interesting to see what RS is like after a Group 1 mile and sixteenth.  That is out of the question now.  No doubt RS won't be as cantankerous at the Belmont finish.  He is a MR PROSPECTOR line colt on both sides and if history is an example his legs will be falling off at the wire after a mile and a half.

Probably right Shammy.  For those of us who understand racing.  But the K D is viewed world wide by people who dont understand things, and even from my point of view, it looked bad, so imagine what the anti racers are saying.
I have seen a lot of horses stopped by the the outriders, as you call them, but never anything as bad as that. The way he slashed across his face with the reins and punched him.
I get it he wanted the horse to stop biting and behave but if he had let him go he prolly wouldnt have been fighting so hard.
I never get why every horse has to have a lead pony anyway. Cant they trot to the barriers themselves ?

RICH STRIKE'S trainer defended the outrider's actions.  I tend to agree having exercised a few head strong young colts as a young man. RS appeared to continue to race after crossing the finish.  Straight or split snaffle bits don't offer a great deal of control for a jockey and outriders are good to have nearby.  Have been bitten a few times myself.  Not pleasant.

Its such a shame the scenes of the outrider/lead pony man punching the horse in the face has gone world wide and given the anti racing mob fuel for their fire. Why on earth he just didnt let the horse go under its own steam, instead of insisting on hanging onto its bit, and then smacking a hitting it when it tried biting the pony is beyond me.  Bad look and even worse horsemanship.

MR PROSPECTOR on both sides and not all that far back.  Snuck in on me  but probably wouldn't have changed my mind being an OH claim at 80 to 1.  Might have another Calvin Borel in RICH STRIKES' jockey.  His breeding says he can make the pace at a mile and a sixteenth in a couple of weeks.  Really fast Kentucky Derby that blew the stretch run of the favorites to pieces.  Two weeks is not a long time to recover before the Preakness.  Don't think I will reach too far into my limited bankroll to back him.  He has already ruined last weekend.Ouch

Not many lines of Chestnut but Noholme was a pretty good chestnut back in the day.  And he's there twice as well.

What a ride and what a run.  Great back story too. Bought in a claimer for $30 thousand.  Jockey I bet none of us have ever heard of.
Heard them say they lost 23 horses and all their gear and trophies in a barn fire. Tragic.
Still cant get over the run and see him after ?  Spent most of the time on the way back trying to bite the lead pony.  Dunno why they didnt just let him go back on his own. He obviously wanted to celebrate in his own way.  LOL
I bet there was more than 156 thousand there  !!!  See that crowd !!!!LOLCry Imagine being in it.  Or getting away after .  No one can drive to the track.  Only the Govenor etc.  You have to park miles away and bus or walk in.
What a great story .

famous guy there bet the house on Epicenter to win and is claiming Rich Strike cheated and race was “rigged.” Says Mike Pence or SCOTUS can intervene and overturn result if they have “courage to be real Americans.”

Comment I saw on WaPo.

The Los Angeles Times previously had reported last October that Baffert had 75 horses die since 2000, either by racing, training, illness or in non-exercise accidents.

Thats an aweful lot of horses in less than 2 years .  How would we all be talking if Waller came up with numbers like that ???

Embarrassed glad you spotted that Kav, i got ballsed up with island falcon, understandable considering the similarity with the names crown pride and island falcon (yeaaaaaaah right), at least it wasn't second chance who spotted it lol
i read something about crown pride, and damian lane provided the aussie connection there, ( i think that island falcon and crown pride raced at the same meet in dubai), and then the old brain fade i think, anyway i am sticking with crown pride (minus anamoe obviously lol) and lynch's horse, they dropped damian and christoph lemaire is riding it, julien leparoux is riding classic causeway they say in the blurb he (leparousx has had 187 starts this season for 187 wins?
confused? yes i am lol

Julien Leparoux

Kentucky Derby horse: Classic Causeway

The scoop: Leparoux enters the Derby with 13 appearances including a seventh-place finish last year with Helium as well as finishing sixth in 2020 aboard Storm the Court. His best finish in the Derby was in 2017 when he came in fourth aboard Classic Empire. He also rode Master Fencer to a sixth-place finish in the 2019 Derby, as well. The Frenchman has made 187 starts in 2022 with 187 wins.
