There wasn’t a dry eye on course when Ally’s Reward flew over the top of them to take out race 7 at Traralgon yesterday afternoon.

It was the most fitting of wins - Ally’s Reward formerly trained by the late Allan Douch, now under the guidance of his brother Garry taking out the Vale Allan Douch Handicap.

“It meant the absolute world to us,” said Allan’s widow Linda.

The long-time Traralgon trainer passed away in March after a four-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

Despite his ill health, Allan continued to train his beloved horses, but when it all got too much – brother Garry stood up to the plate, determined to continue the family’s racing legacy.

Ally’s Reward was Garry’s first winner.

“It’s taken a lot for Garry to get his license, they didn’t give it to him straight away,” Linda Douch said.

“He’s been in the game 40 years and to get his first winner as a trainer, we were just all in tears it was just unbelievable, was just so good.”

A hopeful crowd packed the lawns ahead of the race, most of those on course knew Allan Douch well – nearly all wanted Ally’s Reward to win.

The crowd just roared when they knew she was going to win because the crowd, most of them were Allan’s friends,” Linda Douch said.

“Garry was under so much pressure, you really can’t describe how we feel – I really can’t because Allan trained at that track for probably 40 years, then he was the maintenance guy.

“To do it in front of his home crowd and mates and everything, I really can’t explain it.”

Linda has no doubt her late husband would’ve been watching on from above yesterday, full of delight with the horse’s performance.

“I went into the mounting yard, and I said to Punchy (Nathan Punch), ‘you’ve got the weight of Traralgon on your shoulders today, but also down near the 1900m chute Allan will be leaning on the fence there somewhere yelling at you as you come around that home corner to get going’,” she said.

“I noticed on the steward’s report the poor bugger has been suspended for overuse of the whip in that race, so I reckon Al must’ve been yelling at him.”

Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing

I've been backing this horse Zudin throughout his career backed him to win the AJC Derby this year. Has turned out to be a bit of a plodder but won at great odds a few starts back. Absolutely regally bred by Redoutes Choice out of Fenway which begs the question, why is it such a one paced stayer? Not bred to be a stayer surely?

Pardon My Dust , you have been a betting man for quite awhile reading your posts , why don't you go and read his form card from the beginning of his career starting with his trial form , if there is anything there that gave you a buzz I'll be very surprised . Wink

I actually like one of Zudins stable mates in Race 3 at Warwick Farm.

Quiet Michael has put in 3 solid runs in Qld, good grounding for the 2130m event today.  He was good enough to run 3rd in Saturday company earlier in the year & highly thought of enough to have run in the Qld Derby.

Pretty tough race to sort out though, so will back him each way.

Maiden races at city meetings such as at MV tonight. Disgraceful imo, other than for 2yo's.

SC I actually prefer to be on the maidens. For example if I have time in the day I'll have a bet on the maidens and maybe take an early quad and then stop punting for the day. As a betting proposition they are excellent.

I have a specific system whereby I'll back any horse that is dropping back from winners grade to a maiden. The theory being x amount of horses never even win a race so surely a horse dropping back from winners grade to non winners grade is at a big advantage. Hardly rocket science I know but you'd be surprised as how good the system is and the price that winners are thrown up at. I had one horse at Doomben a few weeks back that had run 9 of 13 beaten just 2.7 lengths in a B55 dropping back to a maiden. That's a fair class drop. It got up at 80/1! Obviously those winners are quite rare but the system itself is a very good one.

Thanks PMD.  And congrats on backing a few.

Though that doesn't excuse the disgrace of programming "3yo and over" maiden races at metro meetings - at mid-weeks let alone Sunday night/Saturday meetings.  It's little more than the result of a successful lobby by major breeders imo.

Is the J Beriman who's been riding recently the same Beriman who did sister Nikita a huge favor by sleeping with her then husband Jarrad McLean?  Thus spelling the end to Nikki's marriage to a disgraced cheat both on and off the track?
