Sam Kavanagh is realistic when he discusses recent purchase Dashing Willoughby. And despite the hype surrounding Dashing Willoughby when he arrived ahead of the 2020 Melbourne Cup, the horse just hasn't been able to hit the lofty heights expected of him. It led to the lightly raced son of Nathaniel being offered for sale on Inglis Digital, where he was purchased for $60,000 by Kavanagh on Wednesday. "He is a highly credentialled European. His form has gone south in Australia, we understand that," Kavanagh said. "We are not buying him expecting him to be a Melbourne Cup horse. "We know he's a rocks or diamonds situation. If we have any luck with him, amazing. But it's a 60-grand throw at the stumps to have a good horse." - Age

Kavanagh said he is keeping his options open with Dashing Willoughby. "I really enjoy training European horses. We've had good success with them," he said. "If he could end up running in the Newcastle Cup, or a Gosford Cup in the autumn (that would be ideal). "If we can win one metropolitan race, then the owners are going to get more than a thrill."

Certainly is a head scratcher that a horse can beat Spanish Mission and Cross Counter in a G2 and get beaten 27 lengths 2 runs later in our Caulfield Cup , ran disgraceful in the MC also , then went to Waller who couldn't get him going , question did he pick up a bug on the plane trip over ? are his lungs RS ? or did they leave the recipe at home for themselves ?

In his sale write up it said "He has struggled to return to form this season with several niggling issues requiring management. Please see attached vet report."
VETERINARY CLINICAL HISTORY Re: Dashing Willoughby To Whom It May Concern: The horse 6yo bay thoroughbred gelding “Dashing Willoughby” had been under the care of Centennial Park Veterinary Practice whilst in training with Chris Waller at Rosehill Racecourse, Rosehill, NSW from June 2021 to October 2021. During that time of the gelding was subject to routine racehorse management, along with examination for right front fetlock effusion on the 23rd September 2021. There was no lameness noted, but the horse had mild effusion of the right fore fetlock and pain on flexion. There were no significant radiographic findings, and the horse was subsequently medicated with intra-articular triamcinolone and hyonate. The effusion and pain on flexion resolved fully. On the 2nd October 2021 “Dashing Willoughby” was examined post-race. An endoscopic examination of the upper respiratory tract revealed normal grade 1 (Lane) laryngeal movements, with blood present in the trachea (grade 2 out of 4 Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage). The horse trotted with no lameness detected, with no joint effusions or pain on flexion, and he had recovered normally post-race with no evidence of any cardiac arrythmia or irregularity. The horse is currently spelling Yours faithfully, Dr Ross Alexander BVSc

A tragedy in waiting, never mind Kavanagh will find something to cheer the horse up, he's got a track record, it seems Gerry is one of the select few oblivious to it.

Jeez I just about would've thrown in 10k for a share seems like a bargain if he can get anything close to his UK form. Maybe he just needs some TLC.

Grading scales for exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). A: Grade 1, B: Grade 2, C: Grade 3, D: Grade 4, according to Hinchcliff et al. 20 : Grade 1 = 1 or more flecks of blood or 2 or fewer short, narrow streams of blood in the trachea or mainstem bronchi visible from the tracheal bifurcation; Grade 2 = 1 long stream of blood or more than 2 short streams of blood occupying less than a third of the tracheal circumference; Grade 3 = multiple, distinct streams of blood covering more than a third of the tracheal circumference, with no blood pooling at the thoracic inlet; Grade 4 = multiple, coalescing streams of blood covering more than 90% of the tracheal surface, with blood pooling at the thoracic inlet.

$60,000 â€throw at stumps’ for one-time Melbourne Cup contender Trainer Sam Kavanagh has told the new owners of one-time Melbourne
Cup contender Dashing Willoughby to “expect nothing and hope for the
best” in a $60,000 throw at the stumps which includes a Queensland
winter carnival mission. The European stayer promised the world
but delivered an Atlas when he arrived on Australian shores in 2020,
with the Andrew Balding-trained galloper finishing last in the Caulfield
Cup and then beaten almost 20 lengths in Twilight Payment’s Melbourne
Cup. A sea-change when sent to Chris Waller couldn’t produce any
magic and Dashing Willoughby was last seen at the races when beaten more
than 16 lengths in last year’s Group 1 Metropolitan at Randwick. He
was subsequently purchased by Kavanagh for $60,000 in an online auction
and the Scone-based trainer onsold the six-year-old gelding to stable
clients within two hours. Dashing Willoughby has been nominated
for Saturday’s Listed Tails Stakes (1640m) at Doomben in the first plank
of a winter carnival campaign which Kavanagh hopes will target the
Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap day in
June. Kavanagh said Dashing Willoughby has been impressing
behind the scenes but he knows it is a gamble whether he can get the
one-time highly touted galloper back to anything like his best European
form. “I’ve told the owners to expect nothing and hope for the best, that’s all we are doing,” Kavanagh said. “We paid $60,000 for him online so we don’t have the same lofty expectations they had when they brought him out from Europe. “You
don’t buy a horse off Chris Waller and expect to perform miracles, but I
do like messing around with the European horses and I’ve had a bit of
luck with them. “For the owners there is potentially an
opportunity to race on a big day, even though it’s a rocks or diamonds
throw at the stumps. “You just don’t know where you are going to end up with these horses, he is a high-rated horse who has to start in better racesKavanagh said he won’t get a realistic guide on whether Dashing
Willoughby can regain some form until he is several runs into his
Queensland campaign. The galloper has arrived early in Queensland
looking to avoid wet trial tracks in NSW, but Kavanagh said it was hard
to gauge too much from his trial at Doomben over 1000m last week. “I
expected him to go to the trials and just have a nice trial but he got
on that Doomben inside track that was very tight and he ran behind
Rothfire and they went quick time and my horse was at his top the whole
way,” Kavanagh said. “We are probably not going to know where we
are at until he is third-up at 2000m and then we will look at whether he
can push onto a Brisbane Cup or whether he comes back and ends up a
Grafton Cup horse. “At the moment I am very pleased with his attitude to his work and how he’s handling everything. “But
given his history – how they paid a lot of money so he could come out
and run in a Melbourne Cup and he didn’t tack on – to confidently say
that we think we will run well on Saturday would be madness.” Kavanagh
has also nominated Sikandarabad for Saturday’s Tails Stakes while
impressive last start winner More Sundays will tackle a 1200m BM78
Handicap. More Sundays surged from last to win at Doomben on
April 9 and it gave the enigmatic galloper his third win in his last
four starts. “He is a horse that has got a lot of talent but he
is also a horse that has had wind operations, knee surgery and all sorts
of problems early in his career,” Kavanagh said. “He was once a heavily touted horse but it has taken him a long time to get him sound and happy. “He
needs to be ridden a certain way because of the issues that he has had,
but he has got a phenomenal turn of foot when ridden that way.” As
far as other Queensland winter carnival contenders, Kavanagh is keen to
unleash unraced three-year-old Wrathful which was the first horse he
purchased from Europe after he regained his training license.

Let's look a bit deeper.
He had just two stakes performances in the UK. Yes he won a Gp2, however Barbados the horse that ran 2nd in that race had just 2 wins from 25 starts and this placing was Barbados' sole placing at Graded level. And DW ran 3rd in a Gp3 but was beaten more than 8 lengths.
He's now evidently unsound. Get on at your own risk.

The Racenet article photo of him at Werribee pre MC shows him to be an ultra refined, long/weak backed, ewe necked specimen imo.
I guess the pic shows what I'm referring too, after all
I can easily see why Oz trainers wanted to put weight on him but is it right for that particular horse? There are many more imports whose form decreases once over here, perhaps he's simply another.

Agree it was actually a pretty good run today.
I do like seeing maligned horses like this come good. Look forward to seeing if he can improve again into his next few runs. Assume the Tattersalls Cup at 2400m & Brisbane Cup at 3200m are the ultimate aims.

The Dasher picked up $6000 for his brilliant 9th beaten just 15.8 lengths by Zaaki.
Should improve next time stepped up to 2400m or there abouts. If they have their wits about them the Premiers Cup on the 28th should be his next race.

A little surprised to see him backing up this weekend - he’s accepted for the Chairman’s Hcp over 2143m with King Callow to ride.
There maybe another prize money cheque for him - not sure it will be one of the larger prizes. I think another import in Djukon looks pretty well placed in this race.

Less acceptance fee, race day costs, trainer percentage etc = probable loss or at best break even on the day.

Has run last or near last at most of his 11 starts in Australia. Another last of 12 yesterday at Randwick.
I’m surprised his Benchmark rating hasn’t come down faster (was still a 93 yesterday).
I dont purport to understand the maths of BM ratings but they generally seem to shoot up quickly if you win but take forever to come down again even with a long run of poor form.

The stable are concentrating on their new star.
The stable are going to have some fun with Aramayo. Why did the owners who had him with Waller sell him?
He is still a genuine group 3 horse and there are plenty of 1600m races around for him. even 200om races like the Wagga and Albury Cups would suit him.
Okay back to Dashing Willoughby now.
