I am going to try to draw up a list of Australasia's leading money earners in chronological order.

I had to change it as I kept reading it as money lenders LOL Sorry Wink

Winx
Makybe Diva
Sunline
Octagonal
Super Impose
Better Loosen Up
Horlicks
Our Poetic Prince
Beau Zam
Kingston Town

That is the easy part. It is going to be a lot of searching to get before there.

I suspect Family Of Man was the previous leading money earner before Kingston Town took over the mantel ?

Gunsynd was a leader at one stage I seem to remember.

I have a book at home called the $100,000 club.

Horses are Gunsynd, Hydrogen, Lord, Tulloch, Prince Cortauld, Rising Fast, Redcraze, Sailor's Guide, Shannon and Phar Lap.

So you could look at that group

The criteria for inclusion in the above list are as follows. The purpose of these criteria is to include only horses that should be recognised as being Australasian.

  1. Horse must have earned at least $5,000,000 (AUD) in total career prizemoney according to Racing Australia (http://www.racingaustralia.horse/).
  2. Horse must have earned at least $2,500,000 (AUD) in total career prizemoney in Australian and/or New Zealand races. Example of horse excluded: Elegant Fashion [(Aus), Danewin - Wily Trick (USA)] won $6,813,232 in career prizemoney, however only $842,600 of that was won in Australian races (the remainder was won in Hong Kong).
  3. Horse must have earned $1,000,000 (AUD) in Australia and/or New Zealand races and/or won at least one Group 1 race when officially trained in Australia or New Zealand. Examples of horses excluded: Dunaden [(Fr), Nicobar (GB) - La Marlia (Fr)] won $8,122,328 (AUD) in career prizemoney, of which $5,600,000 was earned in Australian races (including two Australian Group 1 wins). However, as Dunaden was never officially trained in Australia it has not been included. Americain [(USA), Dynaformer (USA) - America (Ire)] won $5,923,677 (AUD) in career prizemoney, and earned more than $2,500,000 in Australian races. Americain was trained in Australia (by David Hayes) for a short period, however won less than $1,000,000 during that time and did not win a Group 1 race during that time.

It's not the top earners it's the horse at the top of the ladder I think for the eras that he is after.  Let's face it lots of great horses ran at prices of 300 pounds to the winner in a G1.

What a fabulist list of greats there furious , you know Neville Selwood said one day that Prince Cortauld was the best horse he had ever ridden , that was until along came Todman.

The first six are speculative but I am confident they could be the only horses that could have claimed to have won record stakes prior to Chester.  Mormon may have gone very close in the 1860's but it difficult to be specific.  Sweepstakes and match races complicate matters further in the early days.

This a list of horses that led the money list.

Not all the horses that have won a lot of money.

Not sure what was wrong with the opening heading.

Thanks Tontonan. As usual, outstanding. Thanks.

Hello everybody.

I had to withdraw from social media for a spell.  There was too much dirty air... and I had to move house in the middle of a pandemic.  The good news is that I am now happily residing on the seaside which is a fine place to be locked down if you have to be locked down.

These lists were put together sometime ago on the other forum so rather than watch others try to reinvent the wheel I thought I would roll them out.

There are some interesting aspects to these tables.  For example there is no mare on the the lists until Sunline, then Makybe Diva and Winx, the last three on the list, the three record stakeswinners in the 21st century.  That is down right peculiar and warrants an explanation that is beyond me.

The biggest gap between records being broken - or the longest standing record if you like - is Carbine's 31 years 10 months and 18 days before Eurythmic passed him in 1922.   That might have something to do with the fact that Carbine raced through the final stages of an economic bubble, the long boom off the back of the gold rush,  that burst in spectacular fashion not long after he retired ... and a World War which scuttled the recovery ... and that Carbine was a freaking champion !

Phar Lap's record stood for 22 years 8 months and 16 days which is remarkable given that Phar Lap raced through an economic depression with falling prizemoney but the longevity of his record was helped by another world war.

The next longest was Tulloch's reign as prizemoney champion of 12 years 6 months and 12 days through the period of the post war boom, a period of stability and low inflation,  just ahead of Makybe Diva's reign of 12 years and 6 days.

The shortest reign as prizemoney champion was 14 days when Beau Zam won the Segenhoe Stakes on 4 March 1989 to break Strawberry Road's international record before Our Poetic Prince broke Beau Zam's record winning the Tancred a fortnight later.

As for pop up prizemoney,  it is not a problem.  In the old colonial lists there are horses listed who won the majority of their prizemoney in match races in which the owners would furnish half the prize each on a winner take all basis. Money is money.  We don't discriminate here.

I am still cobbling this list together but the succession of record stakes winners in the USA in the past 100 years  seems to be :

MAN O'WAR
20 October 1923 Zev
6 September 1930 Gallant Fox
1 August 1931 Sun Beau
2 March 1940 Seabiscuit
15 July 1942 Whirlaway
28 June 1947 Stymie
9 October 1947 Armed
25 October 1947 Stymie
3 June 1950 Citation
19 May 1956 Nashua
11 October 1958 Round Table
31 October 1964 Kelso
6 October 1979 Affirmed
 19 July 1980 Spectacular Bid.
10 October 1981 John Henry
5 November 1988 Alysheba
27 March 1996 Cigar
27 September 2008 Curlin
26 March 2016 California Chrome
25 March 2017 Arrogate

The date being when the previous record was broken.
I will flesh the table out in more detail later on but that is the succession.

Great to have you back Tontonan! And terrific to hear you're living a good life by the seaside. Cheers, BP Hug

Yes must admit living by the seaside would be nicer than walking the dogs around the neighbourhood because the river walk is too busy!  Some very good horses on the above lists.  Even though some are well and truly overlooked when champions are talked about.

I seem to recall that in the late '60s or so the Miller's Guide recognised a NZ horse named Cadiz as the leading Australasian prizemoney earner, taking into account his US stakes. One reference I have seen (on Pedigree Query) would have him ahead of Sailor's Guide I think.

I guess with only one stakes win in Australia he's looked upon as for the New Zealand list John.

Thank you John H, your correction is much appreciated.

Cadiz is certainly eligible, bred and raced in New Zealand and Australia.  It is an oversight that will be corrected.  The list was not all my own work and the fellow who put together the international table is meticulous. But the oversight is understandable.  Much of the research is based upon press reports and the digital collection at the national Library gets very thin after 1954.  In fact we are largely dependent upon the Canberra Times which was hardly the most attentive turf journal.  There is no record of his Hollywood Gold Cup win in those pages but there is a snippet about him winning in New York.

There is a   New York Times report on his Gold Cup win which states his win dividend was $50.70 so he was quite the long shot.  It was a handsome victory though as seen in this newsreel...

I have managed to cobble together rough details of his Australian campaign in 1960 -

2nd 12 October 1960 VATC Windsor Hcp 6f    - Caulfield Stakes day, run on the Wednesday in those days.  Cadiz ran second in the sprint while Lord dead heated with Dhaulagiri in the Caulfield Stakes for his third successive win in the race.

WON 22 October 1960 MVRC Dundonald Hcp 6f  - the day Tulloch won the Cox Plate

Unpl 29 October 1960 VRC Hallmark Sks 6f  -  Karina 1st;   this race was subsequently known as the Craven A Stakes, Pura Pak Stakes and Salinger Stakes on Derby Day.

WON 3 November 1960 VRC Linlithgow Stakes 8f  - Lord was a short priced favorite and once again dropped his bundle at Flemington.  Cadiz lead all the way and Lord was beaten out of a place.  This Oaks day was a bad one for punters as short priced favorite and crowd darling Wenona Girl was beaten by Lady Sybil for the Oaks.

I will repost the amended table.

According to Peter Pring's "Analysis Of Champion Racehorses", Cadiz also had an unplaced run in the VTC George Adams Memorial Hdcp behind Aquanita after the win in the Linlithgow.

Thanks Grey Affair.

Is his full record in Pring ?  I packed all my reference books away when I had to move house recently and I don't want to unpack them all to be disappointed.

His Australian & New Zealand record is there (although no exact dates are given) & a brief overview of his performance in USA. I'll see if I can post a photocopy of the two pages.
