I still think we have a pretty smart horse at Werribee ready to pounce on Melbourne Cup day.
We know he loves Flemington. he's been and proven himself before. In better form than he was last time too |

Anyone know much about Sir Lucan?
Also I think the Dark Lord Dennis said Johnny will run in something easier.

Only thing I can tell you about Sir Lucan is that he’s a full brother to Sir Dragonet

Will do a quick "Jamal". Or is it a "djebel"?
Here we go: "I see just 5 of the 23 nominations were bred in the Southern Hemisphere. This is an absolute ...etc. etc."

Was very much found out in the St Leger at his last start, running 8th beaten 14 lengths. Now $17 on the TAB.

I'm hoping it will be one of those UK horses that grows another leg in Melbourne, especially with Gai and her magic.

It goes to show being bred in the Northern Hemisphere is no help if you are trained in the Southern Hemisphere.

RACING VIC press release
Update on imaging of Melbourne Cup acceptorsRacing Victoria Staff@RacingVictoria 5:00pm Racing Victoria (RV) advises that the standing CT scanner at the U-Vet Equine Centre (U-Vet) has incurred a mechanical issue and is temporarily out of operation. As a result, mandatory scanning of Melbourne Cup entrants has been unable to proceed as scheduled yesterday and today. RV has been working with U-Vet and the manufacturers to source a replacement part which is in transit from the USA, noting that current COVID impacts on international travel will influence its delivery time. The current expectations are that the scanner will not be operational until at least this Thursday, 28 October, being the final day on which standing CT scans may be undertaken for the Melbourne Cup. A total of 19 of the 35 fourth acceptors for the Melbourne Cup have been presented for a standing CT scan since 16 October 2021 in accordance with the veterinary requirements for the race. The RV Board met this afternoon to consider the situation and has determined the following for the 2021 Melbourne Cup in light of the issue:
In reaching this decision, the RV Board was informed that the process for collection of X-rays at U-Vet would be very similar to that for a standing CT scan, thus having no greater impact on the preparation of a horse who is not required to miss any work. RV Executive General Manager – Integrity Services, Jamie Stier, said: “Since its installation two years ago, U-Vet advise that the standing CT scanner has examined over 200 horses, and this is the first time it’s had a mechanical issue so the timing is both unfortunate and disappointing. “We are taking a pragmatic approach to the situation. All Melbourne Cup acceptors will still be subjected to increased and unprecedented veterinary scrutiny using alternative diagnostic imaging at U-Vet before being cleared to start in next Tuesday’s race. “Whilst our preference remains to use the technology offered by the standing CT scanner, in its temporary absence we know that the X-rays taken at U-Vet will provide us with improved oversight of the remaining horses, particularly in comparison to previous years, and help to identify any areas that require further examination. “This was deemed the fairest and most appropriate decision in the circumstances so as not to penalise the connections of those horses who had not been submitted for a standing CT scan since 16 October by excluding them from the race. “It is noted that all horses will still be required to undergo two veterinary examinations by RV prior to the Melbourne Cup, including an additional examination on the Monday prior to the race, and that the four international runners have all undergone advanced diagnostic imaging since their last start. “Importantly for all connections, all horses will be on a level playing field having all submitted to U-Vet or the Randwick Equine Centre for diagnostic imaging. Equally, those horses submitting for X-rays will not be required to miss any work in the lead-up to the Cup, as those who have been CT scanned have not.” RV and U-Vet are communicating directly with the connections of the affected horses and will provide an update on the resumption of the standing CT scanner over the coming days. |

Thanks VSP.
Has this issue been resolved or do we have a situation whereby some starters will have been scanned and others not? Or have I just misread the situation? As a result, mandatory scanning of Melbourne Cup entrants has been unable to proceed as scheduled yesterday and today. If the machine is not fixed than those not so far scanned will be X Rayed.
It is not a massive issue. That is my understanding.

That doesn't make a lot of sense imo djebel, because there's a huge difference between a CT scan and an X-ray.
And thus some may start under a less testing regime, which is the last thing the VRC or Racing Victoria needs should one of the lesser tested runners perform poorly, pull up lame, or are euthanized half way up the straight.

I was wondering wht they didn't use the BVP MRI so consulted google to find it's different from a CT scanner - especially in price per consult
Both types of scan have similar uses,
but they produce images in different ways. A CT scan uses X-rays,
whereas an MRI scan uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves. CT
scans are more common and less expensive, but MRI scans produce more
detailed images. |

How long has this machine been crucial to the Melbourne Cup entrants? 6-7 months? And they don't have parts for it in country

Been operational for 2 years, this is the first time it’s broken down.
In other news, The Melbourne Cup dream lives on for Denis Pagan, as his 2020 Victoria Derby winner Johnny Get Angry will take his place in next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup. Pagan enlisted the services of champion jockey Damien Oliver to ride the four-year-old in his work this morning, and the recommendation from the three-time Melbourne Cup winner was for him to head straight to the race that stops the nation next week. The dual AFL premiership winning coach had nominated Johnny Get Angry for Saturday’s Hotham Handicap. While Oliver was in the saddle at trackwork this morning, Pagan confirmed that Lachie King will continue his association with the horse in the Cup. Johnny Get Angry is a $151 chance in the Melbourne Cup with Sportsbet. |
