I'm not the world's  biggest fan of the world's best sprinter but even I'm a little surprised to see the form guide showing 1 win from 9 starts at headquarters. Can he make it 2 from 10 in this and reaffirm his greatness?

Not imo fwiw.  Big smile

Only four chances for me, those being Nature Strip, Eduardo, Masked Crusader and Libertini and not by any means in that order.

This is a cracking field, this seasons winners of the Newmarket, Coolmore, Lightning, VRC Sprint Classic, William Reid and The Galaxy lining up, plus Dirty Work and Libertini who have shown potential to mix it with the big boys of sprinting, Order of Command perhaps out of his depth here but why not have a throw at the stumps? Eleven Eleven won 3 on end culminating in the Magic Millions Cup beating Yao Dash and giving him 4.5KG so again why not have a throw at the stumps?

Could be the race of the day.

Bloody hell, Masked Crusader would have bolted that in had he got outside and clear at the top of the strait! Anyway that's racing, that is the advantage of sitting on the speed.

He is not quite as bad Afros, but he is one dimensional like Chautaqua.

His early gate speed at anything up to 1200m is not ideal for winning more races than he loses (at the top level).

I assume he is continuing on for the All Aged and maybe the 1400m can see him sit closer, but if you are going to give Nature Strip six lengths at the turn, you will lose more than you win.

He is a very very talented horse, but you are correct in a race up to 1200m if you can sit in front or just on the speed you will win more than you lose.

They don't fan on the corner like they do at the valley , he never left the fence whilst the Big Chance went 12 wide and paid the price ( September Run) she could have made it interesting, however he's very promising and his best is yet to come imo.Wink

Exactly. I'm not a Nature Strip fan at all but there's only one horse you wanted to be on around the home turn.

Eduardo very disappointing but the horse can run time and he didn't try to, he went the sit sprint.

Yes you've always been able to read between the lines AA but I'm not sure it would've made too much difference. When Nature Strip is in the mood not much can beat him if anything really.

Wayne Hawkes lashes Kerrin McEvoy over Masked Crusader ride

By James Lamb
Co-trainer Wayne HawkesCo-trainer Wayne HawkesImage: Getty
Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes believes Masked Crusader would have beaten Nature Strip in the G1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) if it wasn't for a 'badly ill-judge ride'.

Speaking with Gareth Hall on RSN Central on Tuesday morning, Hawkes didn't hold back in his critique of Kerrin McEvoy's ride.

"He (Masked Crusader) ran good, jockey got a bit lost ... Actually, he didn't get lost, he got completely and utterly lost.

"Kerrin McEvoy, he butchered it - and I said it to his face. It was terrible, absolutely terrible," Hawkes said.
"He butchered it - and I said it to his face."
WAYNE HAWKES ON KERRIN MCEVOY
Masked Crusader finished second to Nature Strip, beaten two lengths, after passing the 400m in 8th position.

The Team Hawkes-trained gelding was held up for clear running from the top of the straight until around the 200m mark, with McEvoy steering away from the inside rail.

Hawkes was livid with McEvoy for not taking a run on the inside until the horse - in this case, Nature Strip - had bolted.

"Very, very disappointing. A badly ill-judged ride coming off the fence.

"A race later, the Doncaster, they all came around the corner and hugged the fence," Hawkes said.
The outspoken trainer has no doubt Masked Crusader was a 'good thing beaten', despite McDonald easing Nature Strip down over the concluding stages.

"Should he have won? One hundred percent he should won the race.

"J-Mac was up in front on Nature Strip, good luck to him and good on him, but it was pretty disappointing to spend your last six months getting them ready for these sorts of races and for that to happen.

"Am I crying over spilt milk? Pretty much. And you know what, if you owned him, you would be too.

"Look at the way the horse finished. I don't know what the sectionals were - don't need to look - you've only gotta see the way he finished the race off.

"He was getting home three to Nature Strip's one, and he and Eleven Eleven were having a punching duel at the 300m mark," Hawkes said.
The sectionals posted on the Australian Turf Club website have Masked Crusader clocking 11.78 seconds for his final 200m, far quicker than the next fastest for that section at 12.16 (Zoutori).

The son of Toronado ran his final 400m in 22.87, while Nature Strip came home in 23.27 after racing outside of the leader and eventual third-placegetter Eduardo.

Success in the TJ Smith Stakes would've made it back-to-back victories at the top level for Masked Crusader, following his brilliant win in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 19.

"You don't get these chances very often, they are two-and-a-half million dollar races. You want to ride the big horses, well you need to step up to the plate - it's as simple as that," Hawkes said.

"You just don't get those races back. The TJ is the premier sprint race in Australia."

Hawkes said The Everest is now firmly on the agenda for Masked Crusader, with slot holders already keen to lock in the rising star.

"We'll get him ready for The Everest and hopefully we can get the job done there."

McEvoy has been butchering horses for a while now.

Not sure it would've won but it would've definiteyl come close.

Timeform rating of 129 for Nature Strip in TJ Smith stakes. This equals his career peak rating

Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

No-one with more than half a brain takes any serious notice of Wayne (Fonc) Hawkes.  Can't train much himself, and largely lives off his dad and brother's horses who come down to Melbourne fit and ready to win.  All he has to do is maintain their fitness levels and bignote on Racing.com.

As for Masked Crusader, this from Voyager whose opinion most here seriously respect: "he is one dimensional like Chautauqua. His early gate speed at anything up to 1200m is not ideal for winning more races than he loses (at the top level).  I assume he is continuing on for the All Aged and maybe the 1400m can see him sit closer".

As for McEvoy he can err over shorter distance, if not in this particular case where he could've ridden the ears off the horse earlier on and probably still get beaten by more than he was on Saturday.  However given equal opportunity imo believe McEvoy's far and away the best distance (2000 plus) local jockey and has been so for some time.

But admit it's all about opinion, and fwiw that's mine.
