At least four sin bins have been reportable, but no more action should have been taken.

I understand the effects of concussion in the future when players have turned forty or fifty, but the sport can not do anything about this through the rules.

I think that contracts from now on, will need to have a clause in them saying that any future compensation will be limited to a maximum of $1 million dollars or somewhere near that. And that CTC scans are mandatory before you sign a contract to see how susceptible you might be to the future effects of concussion (a CTC scan might be able to show some structural defects before any issues occur).

The magic round send offs and sin bins have been a over reaction, when looking at the actual incidents over the weekend.

The old boys club doesn't like it but the reality is that Rugby League needs to evolve to maintain its position as a major sport.  The old days of "just get out there and f***ing hit em!" are gone, the reality is that there are many sporting options available now than in years gone by.

The game needs to eliminate as much as possible the ugly sights like a heavily concussed player stumbling all over the place or it will become an also-ran sport like boxing is becoming.

I am not sure how you can get it completely out of the physical game but the number of long injury times and forced retirements from concussion means something must be done.

The days of waist and leg tackles are gone, killed off by the offload that used to be a skill owned by a minority of talented forwards. Now the offload is a skill every player has to some extent and is a skill coached and practiced intensely.

The emphasis in a tackle has gone from get to ground quickly with a waist tackle to wrap them up high to prevent the inevitable offload and next phase plays. Errors as we have seen a multitude of times recently are inevitable.

it will only take one case of a player taking another to court after a severe head shot, for head-highs to come down six inches. Should have happened yonks ago.

You sign up to play football, not to get coat-hangered or elbowed or end up with dementia. Accidents will always happen. Heads striking the ground will always happen. Deliberate dirty play should be eliminated from the game.

Ricky Stuart is living in a time-warp bubble if he thinks the game doesn't need cleaning up.

in the NFL, dirty play is instantly punished. There is no arguing with referees. Instant dismissal for players who start fights.

it should be the same here.

With Melbourne Storm missing three of their best players with injuries and suspension , who did the Dragons go after ....Addo-Carr and Papenhuyzen ?
Of course they did .  a disgrace to the game.

As a recent devotee of NRL, can any one tell me what percentage of players are from UK, NZ,PNG, Samoa, Fiji or other Pacific islands compared to Australian born players  ?
30/70 ?

In 2018 News Ltd found that 48% if NRL were of pacific islander decent.

This is what was behind the push for Tonga and now Samoa, one of these nations alongside Fiji and perhaps even PNG is capable of winning a world cup one day.  In fact but for a contentious refereeing decision in the semi final defeat to England in 2017, Tonga may already have a world cup final appearance to their name.

After 10 games the Panthers are unbeaten, whereas the Storm have suffered 2 defeats and the Eels have suffered 1 defeat.

Allotting points for all clubs current position on the ladder ( first 1 point, second 2 points, third 3 points.....fourteenth 14 points, fifteenth 15 points and sixteenth 16 points ), eg the Panthers are allotted 1 point whereas the Raiders are allotted 8 points and the Bulldogs 16 points .

At this stage of the season the Eels total 105 points, the Panthers 97 points and the Storm 81 points, meaning the higher a team has been allotted points the easier the draw they have had to date.

I know the Panthers cannot ever be allotted 1 point, the Eels 2 points or the Storm 3 points, as they cannot play themselves, but it is food for thought that the Storm have had the harder draw at this stage of the season.

Teams play 9 teams twice and 6 teams once. How that is determined is down the page on this article.

PT, thanks for that the last table confirms what I already gauged, Storm have the toughest draw. IMO the first table on who plays on free to air tv little to do with the difficulty of the draw, but more about tv ratings.

Alright we have left the cricket and NFL behind us and we are in the middle of an impacted Australian Open tennis, but we are now turning our attention to the winter football codes and so here is this years NRL thread.

This season sees a lot of questions being asked.

1. Can Trent Barret and the new recruits get them to the finals?

2. Are the Titans huge recruits going to stay and improve their performance, or will they succumb to the distractions on the Gold Coast, like most who play their have in the past?

3. Will Tigers fans get an improvement to actually finish higher than ninth, or will they regress and fall to the bottom of the ladder?

4. Can Tom Trbojvec play the whole season, and lead Manly to the finals?

5. Is Kevin Walters the man to improve the culture at Brisbane?

6. Will those who failed last year improve this year.? Players like Valentine Holmes, Mitchell Pearce, Micheal Morgan, Tyson Frizzell, James Roberts, Ben Hunt, and many others, let their fans down for a variety of reasons.

7. Can Mitchell Moses lay well for a whole season and lead the Parramatta side to at least a grand final spot?

8. Which team will fall from the eight? Will it be the Raiders due to John Bateman and Nick Cotirc leaving and Hodgson a half season player these days? Will it be the Panthers due to the youngsters who played well last year not backing up? Do Souths need their best 17 on the paddock with the depth being lessened with player movement.

9. What is happening at the Storm with the hooker position? And will it impact on the unity in the squad?

10. Can the New Zealand Warriors bottle their strength and unity from last year and send Roger Tuivasa Shek to rugby with a season to remember?

11. Was Kyle Flanagan the actual problem that caused the Roosters to not make the grand final? I say no and I say the older members of their forward pack including the brave but stupid captain who looks like he will risk his health when he gets to 50 or 60 by continuing the career, need to be moved on and replaced with younger guys to help the guys who are younger. Also they need the other concussion prone player Keary to play the whole season. To me they lack some firepower outwide. Manu is either fantastic or hopeless, usually the later, Tupou is good at finishing but he does not go looking for the ball, he waits to be set up. The dynamic Morris brothers surely can not play as well as last year, although they are ageless so anything is possible. Their halves depth has been diminished. Do we think they can make the grand final?

12. Can one of the mediocre teams from last season push up to become contenders? teams like Manly, New Zealand, Cronulla, Newcastle, Wests Tigers and Gold Coast were all around the 8th to 13th teams and this group is usually the group where one will improve to become a top four team the next season.

All in all this is shaping up as a very intriguing season. The preview to come during the week.
Ok time for a few brief thoughts ;

1 - No
2 - Improved - but only just
3 - No
4 - No - then Yes
5 - Yes
6 - No for the majority. Holmes probably the exception
7 - No
8 - Raiders
9 - No
10 - No
11 - Roosters wont make GF
12 - No

Got lots going for them. Strong contingent that played juniors together , young player group , massive depth in all positions,  strong Club, good coach - & most of all massive talent pool. In saying that i think this year will be their best chance to go all the way - can see problems down the track keeping them all happy.

You’re right about trying to keep them all happy
I’ve heard that Souths may be looking at their reserve grade half who clearly won’t want to be stuck behind Nathan for a decade

Yes Cleary a standout. That Brian To'o is amazing how he breaks a tackle. And Lui & Burton are massive talents. Actually Lui has surprised me big time - improved out of sight past 2 seasons - his defence now is almost as good as Cleary's - & that's a pretty high standard.

I'd go as far to say that Cleary would be the most valuable player in the game at the moment. Few others might be around the same - but no more.

Going very nicely OneOne. Destroying teams left right and centre. Hard to see where their first loss will come from. Apologies in advance. LOL

Other than Tyrone May who may depart if a starting halves spot opens up elsewhere, who are Penrith any chance of losing that they won't be able to replace fairly easily?
