Great win to Joaquin in the playoff and in the dark. The light from the jumbtron tv green side provided great lighting 😆

 Loved watching Arnie. Always entertaining.

However good Nicklaus was, he could actually be boring to watch.

Same as Faldo/ Fargo...LOL Thank you, Byron Nelson.

It's all subjective. But just going on stats does not tell the real truth.

Just bringing in players who won majors within each of the top 2 guys eras, Arnold Palmer was at the tail of his when Jack started as well.
Seeing Manchester United relegated would mean more than words can describe to me.

JJ makes a good point about the competition within each players era needing to be considered, during Jacks period, Jack had Gary Player (9 total Majors) Tom Watson (8) and Arnold Palmer (7) all winning and competing in majors for at least part of the 24 years seperating his first and last major title.  The best doing the same for Tigers were Phil Mickelson (6) Brooks Koepka (5) and Ernie Els/Rory McIllroy (4).  Worth noting that Jack also had Lee Trevino (6) and Seve Ballesteros (5) and Raymond Floyd (4) matching those numbers in his era.

Jacks major winning era lasted 24 years, with a gap of 6 years from his second last to his last, Woods era lasted 22 years, with a gap of 11 years between second last and last.

Not sure I’d use Brooks as a yardstick for Tigers career. They certainly over lap but I’d say that Tiger was pretty much finished by the time Brooks broke out in 2015 to win his first PGA event and 2018 for his first major.

I see it the other way.

In Jacks era there were 1/2 dozen that racked up majors.
The fields are much deeper now, imo

An interesting point on Phil, he won his first PGA tour event in 1991 and had 21 of them before his first major in 2004

I agree with JJ

I said many moons ago that the Tiger era was the weakest.
Ernie Els has been a good player & Phil a great but most of who Tiger beat we’re guys on the decline who were also behind the 8 ball in the technology change that took place

Always a good discussion though with no correct answer apart from our own🤪

But stats do not tell the whole story.

If you play in an era of champions, you might not win as many tournaments.

When Woods came along, his main opponent was Mickelson. Although he won quite a few tournaments by big scores, if you look at the names of those who ran second, there are not many outright 'champions' among them. Good golfers, but not great ones.

Whereas Palmer and Nicklaus played against some elite golfers.

Woods was a lot more dominant than Nicklaus on the PGA tour. Jack won 12.5% of the time, Tiger 23% of the time.

Must have been over 30% before he flamed out with marital and health issues. I don't have that stat.

They were still using metal-headed woods.

I'd like to see them hit with the same clubs Bobby Jones used.

Interesting you say that. I watched a video during the week that had the players from last weeks event in Dubai using drivers that were 20 years old.
They were lucky to hit it 250 yards many as low as 215 yds. Many PGA players hit over 300yds currently

Of interest was also how it made them play this particular hole. Basically they couldn’t cut the corner to clear the rough and reach the fairway. They had to lay way back

These were the Woods era clubs. Bear in mind that was new technology that had moved on significantly from at Norman was using at the back end of his career

Woods playing with early clubs...you know, actual woods...I'd need to see that before declaring he is better than Hogan, Nicklaus, Arnie or Bobby Jones.

Hmmm.

Not Trevino or Arnie or Seve or Bobby Jones or the great Ben Hogan?

 Ben Hogan

While Ben Hogan only landed fifth on our rankings of the greatest golfers, some outlets regard him as the greatest golfer of all time. This list is based primarily on success and accolades, but it is worth noting that a car accident and his service in World War II took time off of Hogan's career. If it hadn't been for these unfortunate factors, he would have undoubtedly found himself higher on the list. Hogan's career didn't take off until 12 years after his debut when he won the 1942 Hale America Open. Shortly after, World War II caused Hogan to be unable to play until 1945. Hogan then won 21 tournaments from 1946 to 1948, but a head-on collision with a bus caused him to be hospitalized with the fear that he would never be able to walk again. Against all odds, Hogan returned to win six Majors in nine starts between 1950-1953, cementing himself one of the greatest comeback stories in sports history.

In golfing history we had Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer & Jack Nickalus recognized in the past as all time champions, then along came Tiger Woods who surpassed them all, admittedly he played with more advanced technology with clubs and balls, now comparing past champion tennis players is not dissimilar. In Laver's time the rackets were heavier and nowhere as good as they are today, however Laver did play in an era where few or any of the eastern bloc of European nations had any players, in fact his era was nowhere as competitive as it is today. No doubt he was the champion of his era, like Margaret Smith / Court, but I would not call either the GOAT as has been suggested simply because of the number of titles they won, however I consider the top men players of the last ten years equal if not better than Laver, and Steffie Graff or Serena Williams better than Smith.
