How bad is this, scores of people suspected of illegal killings, anyone who was involved over there will be forever smeared, regardless of what they did. I have sensed for a long while that special forces were being glamourized by TV shows, and movies, and computer games, and that no doubt gives some people a sense they are above ordinary constraints. The saying "take no prisoners" didn't enter the vocabulary because it is a rarity in warfare, but this is hardly a case of victims who are unambiguously combatants.

Disgraceful at so many levels.

The VC winner arguably faces a very protracted but inevitable and entirely warranted fall from grace, loss of honors, and incarceration.  So sue me Ben.

And reportedly owes Kerry Stokes  a million nine hundred thousand bankrolling his legal challenges against NINE and others for apparently printing and reporting the truth.

Regardless of what happens hereon in, the VC is devalued. The recipients in this conflict may be entirely innocent, but in the public mind, they will be under a cloud. The thing that strikes me, the fighting was hardly comparable to a desperate struggle against a terrible enemy, as was often the case in past wars. People can do desperate things under those circumstances.

You would wonder at the linkage between what these revelations expose, and the hundreds of suicides of Australian soldiers.

What has been achieved in Afghanistan? I am not making this up - the current state of play is a US/Taliban peace deal with the Taliban back in power and tasked with controlling ISIS, which they will not be able to do unless the US provides continuing military assistance.Wacko Good value for $2 trillion.LOL

I'm watching an excellent doco - Leavenworth - about war crimes and politics, featuring Fox, Hannity and Trump.

Love the calls from rightards, if you didn't serve you have no right to judge and this is an attack on the whole military. Well no, the panel was conducted by serving and former military men and it is not a condemnation of the entire military only those who seem to have committed cold blooded murder. And the chestnut it is hard to tell civilians from enemy fighters is no excuse, i would think it was obvious they were unarmed civilians and the alleged murderers got a thrill from shooting them

Not good - quite tragic at many levels. Probably lots of justified atrocities in previous wars that we never got the full story on as well. Are our soldiers any less noble now than say in the first or second world wars ? Not sure - but i doubt it !

War is an atrocity, but when you are deliberately killing people you don't know are combatants, the line has been well and truly crossed, and that is the basis from which this has become  an issue.

Not if even a fraction of the stories my uncle told me of his time in New Guinea during WW2 are true, justified by they were worse than we were. He was traumatised for years and took his own life.

A young 30yo friend who served 5 tours of Afghanistan is not the same man he was. Has since been discharged from the army and lost contact with his family by choice.

I guess you have to be inside their heads to understand their demons.

A fully volunteer army creates a very different force from the largely conscripted armies of the past. More professional, but also more likely to have a higher concentration of people who like shooting at things.....and people.

For their brilliant investigation into war crimes in Afghanistan the Tory government kept the journos under threat of prosecution for years and had the ABC raided by the AFP.

And the Gold Walkley for investigative journalism goes to Christian Porter and Scott Morrison. Congratulations.Clap

Strong rumour going around that Maris Payne will be no mlonger be Defence Minister in Morrison’ s cabinet reshuffle following her remarks about the SAS in Afghanistan that did not go down well in the lower ranks of the military. As a trade off she will possibly become Australia Ambassador to the US, as sadly the current Ambassador Arthur Tsinodinos  is battling cancer and wants to return home.

You could be correct Bob as she is not the Defense Minister now.

Linda Reynolds who is the Defense Minister has strongly denied over the weekend that she is being replaced. Whether that is true or now we will find out shortly

Thought Payne was doing a very good job.

But Dutton?  He's well and truly in bed and tooth and jowl with past Australian War Memorial Director and ex Coalition Minister Brendan Nelson.  You know, the bloke who wanted to spend half a billion dollars on the Memorial itself, criticized the enquiry into alleged overseas atrocities, and was publicly opposed to that sort of money being redirected instead into PTSD victims, injured veterans, and the the mental health of all serving members, veterans and their families.  Ouch

F8ck Dutton and Nelson both.

Further to Bob's post Sinodinos also denied he was coming home and said he would be staying in the job.

Again we know how often politicians lie so let's wait and see
